The African Center of Excellence in Phytomedicine Research and Development, ACEPRD domiciled in the University of Jos says it has developed an anti-snake venom vaccine currently at clinical stage.
The Center Leader of ACEPRD, Professor John Aguiyi, made this known in Jos,Plateau State Capital, while speaking on the research activities of the center.
Professor Aguiyi also hinted that the Anti-snake Venom Vaccine is expected for use after clinical trials.
“We are happy to announce that ACEPRD has developed an anti snake venom vaccine that is presently at the clinical stage” he said.
The Center leader emphasised that the ACEPRD is involving governments of snake belt areas especially Gombe and Plateau states to participate in the clinical trials thereby approving the trials in their hospitals.
Professor Aguiyi added that the Anti snake venom vaccine is the first of its kind following its Polyvalent nature.
“It is the first of its kind,it is Polyvalent and it recognises Cobra,Viper and other Snakes including spider and scorpion.this does not work like conventional anti snake venom which is been produced from horse. The Polyvàlent anti snake venom can be carried about even out of Cold domain as it can withstand temperature of about 40degrees Centigrades” he said.
On the cost and availability of the vaccine to the public, Professor Aguiyi said the vaccine would go as low as N5000 to the public as against N30,000 .
He added that if clinical trials goes all through 2018, the product would be available in the market.
“We hope if clinical trials goes through this year,by next year, the vaccine should be in the market”
“The vaccine has been cloned and it is waiting to be expressed” Prof.Aguiyi added.
Speaking on the Impact of the African center of Excellence in Phytomedicine Research and development, the Center leader said the core mandate of the center which is research in plant and medicine has positively influence the research activities of the University.
According to him, ” the ACEPRD research grants has impacted positively on research strength of academics in the University of Jos and as a whole it has impacted on our research activities” involving governments of Snake belt areas to participate in the clinical trials . buy amoxil online
