Why I Can’t Forget Former President Buhari — Ex-EFCC Chairman, Farida Waziri

0

Former Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri, has paid glowing tributes to late former President Muhammadu Buhari, expressing why she can never forget the role he played in her life

According to her, “The passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari has touched the hearts of millions across our nation. It is a solemn reminder that no matter the trials and complexities of life, a man will be remembered, indeed, by the values he steadfastly upheld.

“In President Buhari, Nigeria witnessed a man whose life was shaped by discipline, defined by incorruptibility, and anchored in an unwavering commitment to truth.

From his early days as a military ruler to his democratic tenure as President, his devotion to the fight against corruption remained undimmed. He was resolute in his pursuit of integrity in public service, even when it meant walking a lonely road. His personal conduct spoke louder than rhetoric: he lived modestly, acted justly, and held himself to a higher standard.

“I pay tribute to him not only as a public servant but as one whose principled actions touched my own life. In a system where justice is often elusive, President Buhari stood firm for what was right. It was under his leadership that the injustice done to me by the denial of my rightful retirement rank as Assistant Inspector General of Police was rectified. That act alone spoke volumes of his character: he recognised truth, and he acted on it.

“President Buhari may have departed this world, but his legacy of moral strength and relentless anti-corruption crusade will echo through generations. May history remember him kindly—as a soldier, a statesman, and above all, a man of integrity. May his soul find peaceful repose.”

There Is Urgency And Relevance Of Robust Legal Frameworks That Can Keep Pace With Technological Advancements – PSC Chair

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu, rtd mni, has called for the urgency and relevance of robust legal frameworks that can keep pace with technological advancements.

According to a press release on Wednesday, July 16th, 2025, signed by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, DIG Argungu noted that the Internet of Everything (IoE) is rapidly redefining how “we live, work, govern and enforce laws.” He said this has implications for national security, privacy, human rights and governance.

The PSC Chairman stressed that in law enforcement, “we are already witnessing how digital surveillance, big data, and artificial intelligence are reshaping our operational landscape.”

DIG Argungu spoke in Abuja at the Call to Bar Reception and Book Launch of a Staff of the Commission, Awar Oliver Gwajime, which was held at the Parry Osayande Auditorium of the Police Service Commission. He was represented at the Occasion by the Head of Press and Public Relations of the Commission, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani.

He noted that the book was timely and “challenges us to think critically about the evolving interface between jurisprudence and digital innovation, adding that it is a commendable contribution to the intellectual resources needed for a more informed, responsible, and adaptive justice system”

DIG Argungu said the book boldly explores the convergence of law, science, and technology in the digital era. “Law, Science and Technology (LAST): Jurisprudential Interrogation of the Internet of Everything (IoE) is more than just a title—it is a statement of purpose and vision.

The PSC Chairman remarked that the author and his work “speak volumes of the immense, often untapped potential that lies within the walls of our institutions,” adding he is a shining example of discipline, diligence, and the thirst for knowledge.

0

Abuja, July 16, 2025 — In a bold move to strengthen internal discipline and uphold professional standards, the Nigeria Police Force has announced that 151 senior police officers are currently appearing before the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) over various pending disciplinary matters.

According to a press release on Wednesday, 16th July, 2025, signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the disciplinary sessions, which began on Monday, July 14, 2025, will run through Friday, July 25, at the IGP Smart Conference Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The officers involved—ranging from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and above—were drawn from commands and formations across the country. They are being investigated for alleged breaches of professional conduct, misconduct, and ethical violations. Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline, stressing the importance of ethical behaviour and internal accountability within the Force.

“The Nigeria Police Force will not condone any form of misconduct. Discipline and integrity are the backbone of effective policing, and we are committed to building a system that reflects those values,” the IGP stated.

MRA Calls On Federal Government To Implement ECOWAS Court Judgment On Blasphemy Laws

0

Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has called on the Federal Government to take urgent measures to implement and give full effect to the April 9, 2025 judgment of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, which declared aspects of Kano State’s blasphemy laws a violation of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

Urging the Government to promptly comply with the Court’s directive to bring all such laws in Nigeria into conformity with its international human rights obligations, MRA stressed that failure to abide by the judgment would not only undermine the rule of law and weaken the regional human rights system but also further tarnish Nigeria’s reputation as a democracy committed to the fundamental rights of its citizens.

In a unanimous judgment by three judges in a suit filed by a human rights organization, Expression Now Human Rights Initiative, the ECOWAS Court held on April 9 that the blasphemy provisions in the Kano State Penal Code, its Sharia Penal Code Law of 2000, and similar provisions in other laws violate key human rights guarantees, particularly the right to freedom of expression, guaranteed by the African Charter and the ICCPR.

The Court further ruled that Nigeria, as a State Party to the African Charter and the ICCPR, is bound to ensure that its domestic laws, including state-level legislation, comply with these international instruments. It accordingly ordered the Federal Government to ensure the repeal or amendment of blasphemy provisions in the Kano State Penal Code, its Sharia Penal Code Law of 2000, and similar provisions in other laws, as they are incompatible with Nigeria’s obligations to guarantee freedom of expression under the regional and international instruments.

In a statement issued in Lagos, Mr. Monday Arunsi, Acting Head of MRA’s Legal Department, said the organization agreed fully with the Court’s reasoning when it stated that “capital punishment is typically reserved for serious crimes like murder, terrorism or genocide where there is a clear victim who has suffered grave harm, not speech or disrespect. The Court is of the opinion that there are less restrictive ways in which the State could limit the freedom of expression for the purpose of ensuring respect for the religious beliefs of others and the preservation of public peace.”

According to Mr. Arunsi, “Nigeria cannot pick and choose which of its international obligations to respect. The judgment of the ECOWAS Court is binding, and the Federal Government has a legal and moral duty to comply with it and ensure that the provisions of all federal and state laws are consistent with the regional and international instruments to which it is a State Party and, in particular, that the laws protect the rights and freedoms enshrined in the African Charter and the ICCPR, which Nigeria has voluntarily ratified. Compliance is, therefore, not optional.”

He noted that the Court’s decision reinforces longstanding concerns by human rights advocates in Nigeria and internationally that certain provisions of the Sharia Penal Code of Kano State and similar laws in many other States, particularly those criminalising blasphemy and prescribing harsh punishments such as the death penalty, are inconsistent with international human rights standards.

Mr. Arunsi called on the Federal Government to “demonstrate leadership in the region by taking immediate steps to engage with the Government of Kano State and other states with similar laws to ensure a comprehensive review and reform of such legislation, in line with Nigeria’s international obligations and in compliance with the orders of the Court.”

He stressed that such reforms should include the amendment or repeal of all provisions that violate the right to freedom of expression, while preserving freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, adding that “Respect for the rule of law and for the decisions of competent international courts is fundamental to the protection of human rights, the promotion of justice, and the preservation of Nigeria’s standing in the international community.”

Mr. Arunsi also urged the National Assembly, the National Human Rights Commission, and other relevant institutions to play their part in ensuring that the Nigeria’s legal framework fully aligns with its commitments under regional and international human rights treaties.

Now That Late President Buhari Has Been Buried, Politicians Will Return To Their Old Ways Ahead Of 2027

0

By Tochukwu Jimo Obi

With the burial rites of late President Muhammadu Buhari concluded, Nigeria’s political class is already shifting its attention back to familiar territory, the race for 2027.

The air is thick with renewed scheming, alliances are being formed and broken in whispers, and the focus has shifted from legacies and service to power, positions, and personal gain.

It is an unfortunate but predictable cycle. Nigerian politicians, it seems, never learn from history, not from the past, not even from death itself.

Lessons Unlearned from Abacha, Yar’Adua, and Buhari

The deaths of three former presidents, General Sani Abacha, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and now President Muhammadu Buhari, should have been sobering moments for Nigeria’s ruling class. These were powerful men who held the nation in their hands, yet death humbled them, suddenly and unceremoniously.

General Abacha died in power, without warning, at the peak of his dictatorship. President Yar’Adua, despite his gentle disposition and vision, was consumed by illness amid political controversy. And now, Buhari, who ruled Nigeria for eight years, departs after a retirement that was meant to be peaceful but was ultimately brief and surrounded by mixed legacies.

Yet, none of these events have served as cautionary tales. The message that power is fleeting, and life itself is uncertain continues to fall on deaf ears. Nigerian politicians act as though they are immortal, as though elections are guaranteed, and tomorrow is promised.

Power for Power’s Sake

Now that Buhari has been laid to rest, the masks are off. Political godfathers are returning to the drawing board. The loud calls for reform and nation-building that briefly followed his death have already quieted. Behind the scenes, familiar deals are being struck, and old rivalries are reigniting. 2027 is just two years away, and for the Nigerian politician, that is all that matters.

The people? Secondary.

The economy? An afterthought.

Security? Only if it affects their convoy routes.

Even as Nigeria bleeds from inflation, insecurity, and unemployment, the ruling class is focused on zoning formulas, endorsements, and backroom meetings. It is business as usual, a vicious cycle of politics without purpose.

Will They Even Live to See 2027?

It’s a hard but necessary question: Do these politicians ever pause to reflect on their mortality? Do they consider that, like those before them, they too might never live to see the next election?

The obsession with 2027 ignores the truth that death is no respecter of ambition or office. What legacy will they leave if their end comes suddenly? What will be remembered: the embezzled funds, the unfulfilled promises, or the countless lives wasted under their watch?

A Nation in Need of Reflection

Nigeria doesn’t lack leaders; it lacks reflection, humility, and long-term vision. The political elite has turned democracy into a deadly game of thrones, where public service has become self-service.

The burial of Buhari should have inspired a moment of national soul-searching. Instead, it has become just another news cycle, quickly replaced by the fever of political jostling.

As 2027 approaches, it is clear that the same old playbook is in use. Nigerian politicians continue to ignore the lessons of history, the inevitability of death, and the urgent need for change. But for how long can a nation keep spinning on this cycle of ambition and forgetfulness?

The question isn’t who will win in 2027, it’s who will survive to make a difference?

Police Authorities Moved Against Mutiny, Not Protests – Says NYP

The Ndigbo Young Professionals (NYP) has corrected a misleading publication by an online medium, which claimed that the Police Authorities are moving to clamp down on protests.

Reacting to a report by Sahara Reporters titled, “Police Retirees Write IGP Egbetokun, Vow To Storm Abuja July 21 Over Pension Hardship, Say ‘Abject Poverty’ Causing Rampant Deaths”, the National Coordinator of NYP, Ambassador Chukwuemeka Chinonso, stated that the current Inspector-General of Police is not against peaceful protests, as has been evident in all protests held so far under his leadership.

“What the Police Authorities are against is mutiny. Mutiny against the Nigeria Police Force is illegal and explicitly prohibited under Nigerian law.

“Under Section 96 of the Nigeria Police Act 2020 (as amended), any police officer who initiates, abets, encourages, or participates in mutiny, sedition, or disturbance—or fails to report or suppress such actions—may face disciplinary proceedings, dismissal, and criminal prosecution.”

Ambassador Chinonso further emphasised that the law is clear and well-known to all serving police personnel.

“We are not against the protest by the Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme. What we are against is Omoyele Sowore’s attempt to incite serving police personnel to mutiny.”

“We wish to remind Omoyele Sowore that Sections 44–46 of the Criminal Code Act criminalise inciting or attempting to persuade any member of the police or armed forces to desert or mutiny. This offence is punishable by life imprisonment.”

In conclusion, NYP called on the Federal Government to urgently reform the police pension system and abolish the contributory pension scheme, which retirees say has failed to provide them with dignity in retirement.

IGP Egbetokun Commiserates with FG, Buhari Family Over Former President’s Demise, Attends Burial With Dignitaries

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force to the Federal Government, the government and people of Katsina State, and the family of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, following his passing.

According to a press release signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, he described the death of the former leader as a “monumental national loss,” the IGP lauded Buhari’s unwavering dedication, courage, and integrity in service to Nigeria — both as a former military ruler and as a two-term democratically elected President. He praised Buhari’s enduring legacy of discipline, patriotism, and selfless leadership.

In a show of respect and solidarity, IGP Egbetokun led a delegation of senior police officers to Daura, Katsina State, to attend the burial rites, conducted according to Islamic tradition. The solemn ceremony was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, alongside an array of dignitaries including top government officials, traditional rulers, and political leaders from across the nation.

The Nigeria Police Force joins the nation in mourning the elder statesman and prays for the peaceful repose of his soul. The IGP further urged Nigerians to honour the former President’s memory by embracing the principles of accountability, discipline, and national unity that defined his life and leadership.
