Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons, have what it takes to again lift the Women’s African Cup of Nations trophy.

According to a press release signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor of Bayelsa State, Daniel Alabrah, the Super Falcons will confront the Morocco female national team in Saturday’s final game in Rabat.

Speaking after the weekly Prosperity Walk at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa, Governor Diri praised the performance of the country’s female team in the 2024 WAFCON.

He congratulated the team for reaching the final and expressed optimism that the girls would lift the trophy for the 10th time.

“Our Super Falcons are doing well in faraway Morocco. I commend them for their wonderful performance having gone through the group and the knockout stages to reach the final.

“On behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa State, I am rooting for our girls in Morocco to return with the trophy.

“They did it in the past, and having won it nine times, I believe they can achieve what the media has dubbed “Mission X,” which will make it the 10th WAFCON title for Nigeria,” the Bayelsa governor stated.

He said a government delegation, including the Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Daniel Igali, and chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Sports, Hon. Tare Porri, was in Morocco to cheer the girls to victory.

The Bayelsa governor equally applauded the state female football team, Bayelsa Queens, which are champions of the 2024/25 Nigerian Women Football League and would represent the country in the CAF Women Champions League.

Diri urged the team to prepare well for the CAF WAFU B Champions League qualifiers in order to emerge champions like they did in 2022.

The Bayelsa helmsman advised youths in the state to develop their God-given talent as government was willing to support them actualise their potential.

Bayelsa State Governor Senator Douye Diri has charged the nine-time African champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, to return home with the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

The Super Falcons on Tuesday in Casablanca marshalled a 2-1 win over the Banyana Banyana of South Africa to zoom into their 10th final in the women’s continental spectacle.

Governor Diri gave the charge on Thursday at the Weekly “Prosperity Walk” at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, ahead of the final this weekend in Morocco.

He commended the girls for the show of determination from the group stage to the final of the showpiece, stating that their triumph in the semifinals against the defending champions, South Africa, is a reflection of the spirit of true champions.

According to him, the government of Bayelsa is solidly behind the girls to see them return with the trophy, urging the girls to remain focused as they chase a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

The governor praised the team’s commitment and tenacity, having gone past Zambia and South Africa, pointing out that the victories have restored the hopes of many Nigerians on the team, describing the final as Mission “X.”

“I would like to use this opportunity to wish our own girls who are doing well in Morocco, having gone through the group stages to the knockout stage down to the semi-finals, and now they are in the final.

“So on behalf of our state and the government of Bayelsa, I hereby wish our girls in Morocco to return with the trophy, they have done it again and again; they have done it for nine times, and the media has tagged it Mission X, the people of Bayelsa and the Government of Bayelsa are wishing them well,” Governor Diri stated.

In a bid to deepen national consciousness and promote the use of key national symbols, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has presented 5,000 copies of the reintroduced national anthem, the Nigerian national flag, and a plaque highlighting the National Values Charter to the National Sports Commission.

The Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, who was represented by the Director of Special Duties and State Operations, Mr David Akoji, described sports as a powerful and unifying force capable of transcending barriers of tribe, religion, and political affiliation, stressing that the collective desire to win often brings people together under a common purpose.

He mentioned that the agency had received complaints and video clips showing athletes struggling to accurately sing the national anthem, prompting the Director General to approve the donation of anthem copies to the commission to enhance correct understanding and performance.

While presenting the plaque containing information on the National Values Charter, he explained that the charter serves as a vital social contract between the government and citizens, adding that it encompasses the Nigerian Promise, the Citizens’ Code, and key institutional policies designed to guide the behaviour and responsibilities of all Nigerians.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, emphasised the significant role of sports as a key driver of the country’s economy, highlighting that beyond fostering national unity, sports also create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth.

The Chairman, who described the gesture as timely and impactful, especially as the Nigerian Falcons prepare to face Morocco in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final, also added that the materials would be distributed at the event to help strengthen national pride and ensure proper rendition of the anthem.

The NOA delegation, led by the Director of Special Duties and State Operations, Mr David Akoji, comprised other senior officials including the Director of Communication and Media, Mallam Bala Musa; Director of Civic, Values and Democracy Education, Dr Olukemi Afolayan; Director of Youth Engagement and Inclusion, Mrs Blessings Oyem; Director of Legal Services, Mr Dogo Williams; and Director of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Mr Emeka Egbugara.

NDLEA, NARTO Collaborate On War Against Drug Trafficking

…… Deployment of NDLEA officers to parks, depots, and drug tests for drivers top agreement

Leaders of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) have pledged to work with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to curb the use of truck and passenger vehicles to traffic illicit drugs as part of ongoing offensive action against substance abuse and trafficking across Nigeria.

According to a press release on Thursday, 24th July 2025, signed by the NDLEA Director of Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the commitment was made on Thursday, 24th July 2025 by the National President of NARTO, Alhaji Yusuf Lawal Othman, when he led other leaders of the transport union on a courtesy visit to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) at the Agencys National Headquarters in Abuja.

Commending Marwa’s courage, vision, and patriotism in the leadership of the Agency, Othman said this visit today is not just ceremonial; it is purposeful and timely. It reflects our deep appreciation of NDLEA’s efforts and our readiness as a key stakeholder in the road transport sector to align with your mission.

NARTO is acutely aware of the burden we carry. Our truck and passenger vehicles traverse every region of the country, serving as the arteries of commerce and connectivity. However, we also recognise that these same routes are occasionally exploited by criminal elements to traffic illicit substances. We at NARTO are committed to reversing that narrative. We believe that collaboration between our association and the NDLEA is both necessary and urgent, and we are ready to play our part.

To achieve the success of the collaboration, Othman proposed sensitisation and training of NARTO drivers and transport operators on identifying and reporting suspicious cargo or behavior; establishment of joint intelligence-sharing mechanisms to monitor drug trafficking routes and tactics; deployment of NDLEA liaison officers at major NARTO parks and depots across the federation, and public awareness campaigns, using our national footprint to educate drivers and passengers on the dangers of drug trafficking and abuse.

While reaffirming NARTOs unwavering stand on the drug scourge, he said our highways must not be used to harm our nation. We want to see a transport industry that supports security, safety, and the health of our communities.

In his response, Marwa assured them of the preparedness of NDLEA to work with NARTO.

According to him, I have had a good relationship with NARTO since my days in Lagos, and I’m glad you’re concerned about the drug problem in Nigeria. We are more than ready to collaborate with you at your parks and depots

He urged road transport owners to always conduct background checks on drivers they give their vehicles to ensure they are not linked to any drug trafficking syndicate or hooked on illicit substances. This, he said, will save the transport vehicle owners the risk of losing their vehicles in avoidable crashes or to the government in case they’re caught being used as instruments of illicit drug trafficking.

How We Kidnapped Bayelsa Judge – Suspects

Suspects in the abduction of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro have narrated how they committed the crime.

Eight of the suspects, who included six males and two females, were on Thursday paraded by security agencies led by the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Idu, and the State Director of the Department of State Services, Mr. Adedapo Amao, in Yenagoa.

The suspects were said to be in the custody of the DSS, which coordinated the rescue of the victim and the arrest of the abductors.

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, on Wednesday, during the state executive council meeting, disclosed that all the suspects involved in the kidnap of the jurist on June 21, 2025, had been apprehended except for the gang leader, who was still at large.

One of the suspects, Justice Brodrick, who spoke to journalists during the parade, said he is an indigene of the Ozobo community in Delta State.

He confessed that he was part of the kidnap operation after a man he referred to as his boss informed him about it.

He said upon arrival in Yenagoa, they were given uniforms and vehicles for the operation and that they immediately swung into action.

The suspect said Justice Omukoro was taken from the premises of an eatery at the Ekeki area of Yenagoa and moved to a location in a neighbouring state.

He, however, claimed they had no actual target but stumbled on the Judge.

Broderick said their victim was immediately moved to their camp and that when he told them he is Ijaw from Ekeremor Local Government Area, they decided to “treat him well.”

He also stated that the man referred to as their General insisted that their victim be kept in handcuffs, but he claimed that, being a fellow Ijaw man, he should be treated with care.

His words: “So, he called me on June 21 and said to say that I should come to Yenagoa. He also called John Uzi, the person who is beside me. And I called Kelvin Olu, my younger brother, to come with me to Bayelsa.

“We mobilised the vehicle for the movement, and uniforms were provided. We moved from our camp, and it was not a fixed target. We were just patrolling before we met the Judge at Kilimanjaro. So we approached him and kidnapped him from there to our camp.”

Another suspect, who identified himself as John, said he was contacted but did not join in the operation as he was not feeling well and that he was in the camp when the victim was brought in.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Idu, said the arrest of the suspects was a testimony to the security governance measures of Governor Diri, who, he said, always insisted that security agencies work together to ensure that the state was free of crime and criminality.

Idu stated that the DSS sent a special team from Abuja for the operation, which led to the arrest of the suspects, including the two females who were their accomplices.

The police chief lauded the governor for providing the necessary logistics for the operation, saying the CCTV cameras mounted by the government in parts of the state were useful throughout the rescue operation and their eventual arrest.

He warned that with the suspects confessing to the crime, those with criminal intent in the state should have a rethink, as Bayelsa was no longer a safe haven for criminals.

NDDC Donates Mobility Aids To Persons With Disabilities In Bayelsa

0

The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has donated supportive aids and mobility devices to persons living with disabilities in Bayelsa State.

Speaking at an awareness programme organised for people with disabilities at the NDDC Bayelsa State office in Yenagoa, the Commission’s Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, urged persons with disabilities to maintain a positive outlook and not feel inferior due to their disabilities.

Ogbuku, who was represented by the Director of the Bayelsa State Office, Engr. Godknows Alamiesiegha, acknowledged the importance of encouraging people living with different challenges.

He advised: “Life is a privilege, and you should be proud of yourself. NDDC is committed to inclusivity and the social welfare of all persons in the Niger Delta region. This is not the first time we have supported persons with disabilities, and it certainly will not be the last. We cherish and love you, and we urge you to persevere because where there is a will, there is a way.”

The NDDC boss promised that the Commission would continue to prioritise the welfare of persons with disabilities in its programmes.

he stated: “The NDDC Board and Management recognise your challenges, and we always plan for you.”

Technical Adviser on NDDC to the Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Nyenye Kuro Matthias, acknowledged the event’s impact, stating that it was the first time persons with disabilities had gathered in large numbers to benefit from such a well-structured initiative.

He remarked, “We deeply appreciate this gesture from NDDC. We assure you that the supportive aids will be used well. We urge the NDDC to consider PWDs in their youth and women’s training programmes and employment opportunities.”

Giving a mental health awareness talk, the lead facilitator, Dr Daniel Smile George, emphasised the need to recognise mental health as a form of disability, citing global statistics that indicate a high level of mental health challenges.

He stressed: “Raising awareness about mental health will encourage individuals to seek help early, thereby reducing mental health disorders within the society.”
The Chairman of the National Association of Persons with Disabilities in Bayelsa State, Mr. Ekpomokumor Mayor, thanked the NDDC for the donations and support to persons living with disabilities.

He said: “We thank the NDDC for its continued support to our members. We are grateful to the medical personnel and support staff for all their contributions to ensure the execution of this programme.”

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Dennis Stephen, expressed his gratitude after receiving a wheelchair. He said that he had struggled with mobility since his leg was deformed.

“Before today, moving around was a challenge. NDDC has given me a new opportunity to regain my mobility, and for that, I am grateful,” he said.

The NDDC distributed mobility aids, including wheelchairs, crutches, walking frames, mobility aids for the visually impaired, hearing aids and visual aids.

Yoruba Group Warns Sowore To End Attacks On Police Spokesman ACP Muyiwa Adejobi

0

The Yoruba Youthsocio-political group, Igbimo Odo Yoruba Afenifere, has issued a strongly worded press release today condemning what it described as “unrelenting and malicious attacks” by Sahara Reporters publisher and perennial presidential aspirant, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, against the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Assistant Commissioner of Police Muyiwa Adejobi.

In the statement released to the media in Lagos, and signed by Omooba Daisi Abejide the Secretary General, the group expressed grave concern over what it termed the “serial cyber stalking, blackmail and deliberate falsehoods” being deployed by Sowore in a targeted campaign against ACP Adejobi, who, they asserted, is merely carrying out his statutory duties as the image maker of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the statement the group said, Sowore’s repeated attacks on ACP Adejobi are nothing more than an indirect plot to undermine and discredit the leadership of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, whom the group described as the real target of Sowore and his alleged political backers.

“We are fully aware that Mr. Sowore and his sponsors, who have long desired to remove the Inspector General of Police by all means necessary, have now turned their sights on ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, a professional and disciplined officer, simply for doing his job,” the group stated.

The group further asserted that as Yoruba people, they will no longer fold their arms and allow one of their own to be subjected to ridicule and unprovoked attacks in the name of political activism or media freedom.

“It is unacceptable that a fellow Yoruba son, who has served Nigeria with honour and integrity, is being continuously harassed and falsely accused. These baseless attacks by Mr. Sowore are not only irresponsible but amount to a calculated attempt to weaken the morale of the security architecture of this country,” the statement read.

Igbimo Odo Yoruba Afenifere issued a stern warning to Mr. Sowore, demanding an immediate cessation of all hostilities and defamation against ACP Adejobi, or face the full weight of legal consequences.

“Let it be known that we will take every necessary legal step to protect our sons from this malicious onslaught. Mr. Sowore must stop these shenanigans immediately or prepare to meet us in court. We shall no longer tolerate his antics, which are clearly aimed at undermining national security under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the group concluded.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to peace, national unity, and the rule of law, but emphasized that it will not hesitate to mobilize lawful action to defend its members from what it described as “a campaign of cyber terror and political blackmail.”

Sowore Has The Most Toxic Followers

0

By Kelvin Adegbenga

In the arena of political activism, Omoyele Sowore has become a beacon for many who yearn for change in Nigeria. His relentless pursuit of accountability and transparency is commendable and has sparked a significant movement among the youth and disenfranchised citizens.

However, with any passionate movement comes a following—and unfortunately, some of Sowore’s supporters exhibit deeply troubling behaviours that raise concerns about the nature of their advocacy.

First and foremost, the toxicity displayed by some of Sowore’s followers is disheartening. Social media platforms, where much of this discourse unfolds, have become battlegrounds of vitriol, where dissenting opinions are met not with reasoned debate but with insults and threats.

This toxic environment stifles constructive dialogue and alienates potential allies who might share similar goals but feel unwelcome due to the aggressive posture taken by these followers. It begs the question: how can we build a better Nigeria if opposing views are drowned out by hostility?

Moreover, the cult-like mentality that sometimes permeates Sowore’s fan base is troubling. The unwavering loyalty displayed by certain individuals often shifts from support for ideas to blind allegiance to a person.

This leads to an echo chamber effect, where criticism is not tolerated and accountability becomes an afterthought. In any democratic society, it is crucial to challenge leaders and hold them accountable. When followers prioritise loyalty over constructive criticism, progress is hindered and the very issues they aim to resolve are perpetuated.

Additionally, there is a worrying trend of cyberbullying that stems from this toxic followership. Many who dare to voice concerns or offer criticisms of Sowore or his methods often find themselves at the receiving end of online harassment.

Such behaviour not only undermines the credibility of the movement but also creates a chilling effect—discouraging people from expressing their thoughts for fear of backlash. A movement that claims to champion inclusivity and open dialogue cannot afford to have supporters engaging in such negative conduct.

Finally, the glorification of aggression and confrontation within this group detracts from the peaceful methodologies that are often more effective in achieving social change. Passion is essential in any activist movement, but it should never manifest as hostility toward others.

Sustainable change requires patience, empathy, and collaboration. When followers promote divisiveness instead of unity, they weaken the very foundation they claim to be building upon.

In conclusion, while Sowore’s vision for Nigeria resonates with many who long for a brighter future, the toxic behaviour of some of his followers poses a serious challenge to the movement. If the goal is to build a Nigeria that values democracy, inclusivity, and progress, then supporters must reflect on their actions and tone.

Constructive engagement, respect for differing opinions, and a commitment to accountability must be at the forefront of any genuine movement for change. Only then can the vision for a better Nigeria truly thrive.

Fidelity Bank Empowers SMEs With Business Management Systems

0

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have been encouraged to adopt digital tools to enhance their operations and drive sustainable growth. This call was made during the Fidelity SME Empowerment Program 2025, held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the bank’s dedicated SME Hub in Gbagada, Lagos.

The event, which drew a large turnout of entrepreneurs and stakeholders, marked the official launch of Fidelity Bank’s initiative to equip 100 growth-ready SMEs with ERPRev-enabled POS systems and business support tools—at no cost to the beneficiaries.

Welcoming guests, Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Managing Director/CEO of Fidelity Bank Plc, represented by Mr. Stanley Amuchie, Executive Director/Chief Operations and Information Officer, emphasised the bank’s commitment to SME development:

“At Fidelity Bank, we believe SMEs are not just the backbone of our economy—they are the architects of innovation, resilience, and inclusive growth. Through the Fidelity SME Empowerment Program (FSEP), we are providing 100 entrepreneurs with the tools, training, and support they need to thrive in today’s digital economy.”

Through the initiative, benefiting businesses will receive a fully installed POS desktop system, ERPRev business software, a receipt printer and barcode scanner, inventory data input support, financial and bookkeeping training, branding and onboarding support, six months of post-installation monitoring, and a free Fidelity POS with instant settlement.

The three-day program features high-impact trainings, masterclasses, and networking opportunities designed to spark innovation, build partnerships, and unlock new markets.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Adaonah Kene-Uyawune, CEO of Manmark-Fidelity Bank’s strategic partner, noted, “This digital transformation initiative is a game changer. It replaces manual bookkeeping with a unified system that simplifies accounting, inventory, HR, and profitability tracking. These tools are not handouts—they are instruments for long-term business success.”

According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, SMEs make up 96% of all businesses in the country, employ over 80% of the workforce, and contribute nearly 50% to the national GDP. Despite their critical role in the economy, many still rely on manual processes that hinder efficiency and limit access to finance.

Fidelity Bank’s intervention is therefore both timely and strategic—providing SMEs with the digital tools and support they need to streamline operations, improve transparency, and unlock new growth opportunities.

Ranked among the best banks in Nigeria, Fidelity Bank Plc is a full-fledged Commercial Deposit Money Bank serving over 9.1 million customers through digital banking channels, its 255 business offices in Nigeria and United Kingdom subsidiary, FidBank UK Limited.

The Bank is the recipient of multiple local and international Awards, including the 2024 Excellence in Digital Transformation & MSME Banking Award by BusinessDay Banks and Financial Institutions (BAFI) Awards, the 2024 Most Innovative Mobile Banking Application award for its Fidelity Mobile App by Global Business Outlook, and the 2024 Most Innovative Investment Banking Service Provider award by Global Brands Magazine.
