Labour Party Reaffirms Supreme Court Verdict On Leadership, Cautions Against Misrepresentation

The Labour Party has restated that the question of its national leadership has been conclusively resolved by the Supreme Court, warning against any attempts to misrepresent the court’s verdict or mislead party faithful.

In a press release issued today by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, the party addressed recent public comments by its 2023 Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed. Dr. Baba-Ahmed was reported to have referred to the suspended former National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, as the party’s substantive leader, during a meeting and in a televised appearance on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily programme.

While affirming Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s right to personal opinion and association, the party emphasized that the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 4, 2025, had effectively nullified any leadership claims by Barr. Abure. The ruling set aside prior judgments that had recognised Abure as National Chairman and struck out the originating suit for lack of jurisdiction.

Quoting directly from the judgment, the party highlighted the court’s words:
“Consequent upon the foregoing, the decisions of both the trial court and the court below recognising Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the 1st Respondent are hereby set aside…”

The party further stated that the Supreme Court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman, who is now recognised as the Interim National Chairman.

Acknowledging Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s interest in party reconciliation, the statement underlined that such efforts must align with legal realities and the rule of law. “Acceptance of Supreme Court judgments is not optional,” the party stressed, “but compulsory for all.”

As it prepares for its upcoming congresses and national convention, the Labour Party reiterated its call for unity and internal cohesion. Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, urged members to remain calm, resolute, and committed to the collective task of presenting a viable alternative to the APC-led government.

The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT Ltd) has been commended for its pivotal role in fostering national connectivity, narrowing digital divides, and securing Nigeria’s foothold in the global knowledge-driven economy.

This commendation was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Mr. Rafiu Olarinre Adeladan, during a courtesy visit to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT Ltd, Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, at the Ground Control Station located along Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Way, Abuja.

According to the Permanent Secretary, “The Ministry regards NIGCOMSAT not merely as an implementing agency, but as a strategic partner in realising Nigeria’s aspirations in space technology, broadband access, and digital sovereignty.”

He acknowledged key concerns previously raised by the Managing Director, including the decade-long recruitment freeze, which has inevitably impacted innovation and operational capacity. Other pressing matters highlighted include a shortage of critical technical personnel, the need for support in the rollout and execution of Project 774, and issues surrounding inadequate remuneration some critical factors, he described as essential for attracting and retaining top-tier talent.

Mr. Adeladan reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to fostering collaboration with NIGCOMSAT to tackle these challenges. He said while some of the concerns may necessitate broad policy reviews and inter-agency coordination, he assured NIGCOMSAT Ltd of the Ministry’s commitment to exploring practical and actionable solutions within Nigeria’s regulatory and fiscal landscape.

Welcoming the Permanent Secretary to NIGCOMSAT, the Managing Director, Mrs. Egerton-Idehen, expressed her delight at the visit and reiterated the agency’s strategic importance. “If other nations can reach space, there is no reason Nigeria cannot, she emphasised. NIGCOMSAT stands ready to lead that charge,” she stated, urging the Ministry to prioritise Project 774 and address structural challenges affecting the agency’s growth and efficiency.

The courtesy call forms part of the Permanent Secretary’s ongoing engagements since assuming office, reflecting the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening institutions that underpin Nigeria’s digital and technological future.

Benue Killings: Police Arrest Arms Suppliers

…..Recover GPMG, AK-47 Rifles, Over 2,200 Rounds of Ammunition

In a series of well-coordinated operations aimed at dismantling the arms supply networks fueling deadly attacks in Benue State and other parts of the North-Central region, the Nigeria Police Force has made significant breakthroughs, arresting key arms dealers and recovering a cache of military-grade weapons and ammunition.

According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the operations were executed by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department – Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT), acting on credible intelligence.

On June 21, 2025, the operatives stormed a forested hideout at the Kardako–Yelwata axis, bordering Nassarawa and Benue States, believed to be a base for bandits involved in the recent Yelwata killings. A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, forcing the criminals to flee with gunshot injuries. In the process, two General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs) were recovered from the site.

Furthering the crackdown, on July 8, 2025, the FID-IRT operatives apprehended a suspect, 25-year-old Abubakar Isah, along the Lafia–Makurdi expressway in Benue State. Isah was found with three AK-47 rifles and 1,002 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition. Intelligence revealed that the weapons were being transported on behalf of a notorious arms dealer, Jacob Adikwu, based in Abinsi, Guma LGA, for delivery to a well-known bandit kingpin, Dan Hassan, implicated in numerous attacks across Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara States.

In a related operation on July 12, 2025, another suspect, Ibrahim a.k.a. Chelsea, was arrested after confessing to transferring N6.5 million to Jacob Adikwu. N6 million of the funds was payment for two AK-47 rifles and 2,000 rounds of ammunition, while the remaining N500,000 was used to modify a Volkswagen vehicle with a concealed compartment for smuggling arms to Kwara State.

Acting on this intelligence, operatives launched a follow-up operation in Abinsi town on July 16, leading to the arrest of Jacob Adikwu. Three AK-47 rifles, 220 rounds of ammunition, and the Volkswagen vehicle were recovered. A subsequent raid on July 17 uncovered five more AK-47 rifles, a rocket launcher, and 1,000 additional rounds of live ammunition from the same suspect.

The police have intensified efforts to apprehend Dan Hassan and other accomplices still at large, while those in custody will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, commended the operatives for their relentless efforts and affirmed the Force’s resolve to eliminate the supply chains enabling violence in Benue and beyond. He reiterated that under the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Police will not relent until peace and order are restored across the country.

He said approval has been granted for the installation of solar-powered streetlights across the newly constructed roads in Tumfure, Akko local government at a construct sum of 1.1 Billion Naira, as well as some communities in Nafada Local Government Area which include Birin Fulani, Birin Bolawa, Barwo Winde, Barwo Nasarawo, Jigawan Nafada and Gudukku at a contract sum of 681 Million Naira

On the upgrade of the Kantoma Market in Billiri into a one storey building, Dr. Yusuf disclosed that the project had earlier been awarded during the council’s 4th meeting at a contract sum of 420 million Naira, after which the Billiri LGA Chairperson wrote to request for its upgrade into a storey building to boost local commerce and enhance revenue generation, and a sum of 213 million has been approved for the conversion.

The Director-General further disclosed that additional works have been approved at the the newly established NALDA market in Kwadon, Yamaltu/Deba local government, including the upgrade of the water scheme, provision of perimeter fence around the water tank especially the control area, and construction of 4 fetching points to allow for adequate utilization of the project, awarded at a contract sum of 19 million Naira.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Kwami Local Government, Ass. Prof. Ahmed Wali Doho, who also heads a sub-committee overseeing a verification exercise for local government workers across the state, briefed the press on critical findings from the ongoing screening.

According to him, the interim report submitted on the verification exercise, which ran from 12th June to 3rd July 2025 and focused initially on staff of the Local Education Authority (LEA), revealed the large-scale payroll fraud so far uncovered, saying “A total of 686 individuals failed to show up to prove they are legitimate workers. They were still drawing salaries, which amounted to N31 million.”

He added that another finding indicates that in the April payroll, 265 workers – some deceased, others retired – were still receiving monthly pay and the amount realized under this was N36 million.

He further stated that the committee has found that 258 staff members, who were supposedly on loan to other government agencies or departments, were collecting double salaries, a practice that contravenes civil service regulations, “This alone has cost the state N67 million”, Doho stated.

He emphasized that as the exercise continues, the goal is not to witch-hunt anyone but to ensure payroll integrity, block financial leakages and create room for fresh recruitment, particularly in critical sectors across the local government areas.

SWYA Commends Nigeria Police For Professional Handling Of Sowore’s Protest

The South West Youth Alliance (SWYA) has lauded the Nigeria Police Force for its professionalism in managing the recent protest led by activist Omoyele Sowore, which was ostensibly organised to advocate for improved police welfare.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Director, Adenike Ajanlekoko, the youth group praised the police for showing “remarkable restraint, maturity, and adherence to the rule of law” in the face of what it described as a protest marked by “provocative tone and politically charged rhetoric.”

SWYA emphasised that while it upholds the constitutional right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression, it questioned the timing and intent of the demonstration, which it said appeared to be politically motivated rather than a genuine campaign for police welfare.

“The nature and timing of Sowore’s protest raised legitimate questions about the true intent behind the action,” the group stated. “Nevertheless, the Nigeria Police Force rose above the distractions, ensuring that public peace and security were not compromised.”

The group commended the conduct of the officers on duty during the protest, noting that their disciplined approach and avoidance of confrontation reflect the improving standards of the Force under its current leadership.

SWYA urged civic leaders, youth groups, and political actors to emulate the professionalism exhibited by the police and promote engagements that foster national unity and institutional respect.

“The South West Youth Alliance remains committed to supporting constructive dialogue, good governance, and responsible civic participation that advances the collective interests of the Nigerian people,” the statement concluded.

Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment To SDGs As Princess Orelope-Adefulire Presents National Statement At Un High-Level Political Forum Ministerial Segment

Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was on full display at the United Nations Headquarters on Monday, as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs), Her Excellency, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, OFR, led the Nigerian delegation to the 2025 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) and delivered the country’s national statement at the opening of the Ministerial Segment.

According to a press release from New York on July 22, 2025, signed by the Special Assistant on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication to the SSAP-SDGs, Desmond Utomwen, speaking on the theme “UN@80: Catalysing Change for Sustainable Development,” Princess Orelope-Adefulire joined global leaders in assessing progress and shaping strategic responses to the ongoing challenges affecting SDGs delivery worldwide.

“The world faces a stark reality,” she warned, “with only about 17% of SDGs targets on track. Accelerated, transformative actions are urgently needed, especially in developing countries like Nigeria, where global shocks and economic challenges continue to exacerbate poverty and inequality.”
She aligned Nigeria’s position with the statement delivered by Iraq on behalf of the Group of 77 and China, while offering the country’s unique perspectives and experiences in SDGs implementation.

Highlighting national milestones, the Presidential Adviser outlined Nigeria’s alignment of the SDGs with major policy frameworks such as the National Development Plan (2021–2025), Nigeria Agenda 2050, and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration. She noted that these frameworks prioritise inclusive growth, food and national security, infrastructure development, industrialisation, and enhanced governance.

Key innovations referenced included the Nigeria Integrated Sustainable Development Goals (iSDG) model, Integrated National Financing Framework (INFF), and the realignment of the national statistical system to support SDG tracking and evidence-based policymaking.

On economic reforms, Princess Orelope-Adefulire spotlighted the discontinuation of fuel subsidies, the unification of foreign exchange rates, and a sweeping new tax legislation as bold steps taken to improve fiscal space and encourage investment. “These policy shifts are already bearing fruit, with a recent positive upgrade in Nigeria’s sovereign credit rating,” she stated.

Health sector transformation was also featured prominently in Nigeria’s statement. The Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, anchored on a Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp), was described as a flagship reform programme focused on strategic coordination among government institutions, private sector players, and development partners to achieve better health outcomes and strengthen health security.

This year’s forum also marked a decade of Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), with Nigeria presenting its third VNR since the SDGs’ adoption. “Our 2025 VNR emphasises inclusive action and a ‘whole-of-government and whole-of-society’ approach to drive accelerated progress,” she affirmed, referencing earlier VNRs in 2017 and 2020.

Princess Orelope-Adefulire lauded the value of peer learning at the HLPF, celebrating the shared experiences of the 36 other countries that presented VNRs. She also welcomed the outcome of the recent International Conference on Financing for Development, reaffirming Nigeria’s support for the Addis Ababa Action Agenda as a key pillar for financing sustainable development.

In concluding her address, the SSAP-SDGs declared:
“Nigeria will remain steadfast in its commitment to the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda. We will continue to champion universal values, promote global solidarity, and advocate transformative solutions to ensure no one is left behind.”

The 2025 HLPF, which runs from July 14 to 23, convenes under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), bringing together ministers, civil society, private sector actors, and development partners from around the world to review progress and mobilise efforts to deliver on the SDGs as the UN marks its 80th anniversary.
