Delta Police Arrest Woman For Selling Infant, Nab Fake Drinks Producer And Drug Dealer

The Delta State Police Command has recorded a series of major operational successes, including the arrest of a woman who sold her two-month-old baby, the apprehension of a suspect involved in the production of adulterated alcoholic drinks, and the arrest of a drug dealer with a large haul of illicit substances.

In the first incident, police arrested a woman, identified as Rita Ughale of Kokori in Ethiope East Local Government Area, after she falsely reported that her two-month-old baby had been snatched during a robbery while she was travelling in a tricycle. The report was made on December 15, 2025, at the Ekpan Police Division.

Following swift action by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Labe Joseph, and operatives of the division, investigations uncovered inconsistencies in the woman’s account. Further interrogation led to her confession that the robbery story was staged and that she had sold her baby for ₦1.5 million to a couple, Osas Omijie (39) and Judith Omijie (30). The suspects were arrested, and the infant was successfully rescued and confirmed safe. Police said all suspects are in custody while efforts are ongoing to arrest other accomplices.

In a separate operation on December 14, 2025, operatives of the Eagle Net Special Squad, Ughelli Surveillance Team, acting on credible intelligence, executed a search warrant at a residence in Otor-Edor, Ughelli. The operation led to the arrest of a 67-year-old woman, Lydia Osanebi, who allegedly specialised in the production and repackaging of adulterated dry gin.

Recovered from the premises were large quantities of suspected dangerous chemicals, including methanol, formalin and cochineal, as well as empty and newly printed seals, packaging materials of various dry gin brands, and over 60 litres of suspected counterfeit gin. Other items seized included super glue, stickers and shot glasses. The suspect reportedly confessed to engaging in the illegal activity for over 20 years. Police warned that methanol is highly toxic and capable of causing severe health complications, including blindness and death. Investigations are ongoing to trace the distribution network.

Meanwhile, on December 18, 2025, operatives of the Commissioner of Police–Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), led by ASP Julius Robinson, arrested a suspected drug dealer during a raid in the Gana area of Sapele. The suspect, Felix Africa (44), was found in possession of eight bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp. He reportedly admitted ownership of the exhibits and confessed to dealing in Indian hemp and other illicit drugs. Investigation continues.

The Delta State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, protecting public health, and ensuring the safety of residents. Members of the public were urged to shun criminal activities, avoid unregulated products, and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or the police control room.

The development was confirmed in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, for the Delta State Command, Asaba.
