NSCDC Nabs Five For Illegal Mining, One Other Over Theft In Osun

Nigera Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Osun State Command has apprehended five persons for alleged illegal mining in the state and one other for alleged stealing.

NSCDC Commandant in the state, CC Igbalawole Sotiyo, while parading the suspects on Tuesday, 12th November, 2024, in Osogbo, said the suspected illegal miners were arrested on Nov. 8 in Ilesa by the mines and steel unit of the command

According to a press release signed by PRO Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun Command, ASC Kehinde Adeleke, the Osun NSCDC boss said a discreet investigation revealed that the suspects, who were from Kano, carried out the mining activities without mining license, which contravenes
Section 2 of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2007.

According to him, the act states that: “No person shall engage in mining activities without a valid mining lease or permit”.

Commandant Sotiyo added that section 46 of the same Act also states that “any person who contravenes the provisions of this act commits an offence and is liable”.

In another development, Commandant Sotiyo also made it known that the personnel of the command arrested one Akeju Abiodun, 34, for stealing.

The commandant said the suspect stole N220,000 from the shop of one Mrs Hammed inside the market within the town on Nov. 4 and made away with the money.

He, however, said that the suspect was arrested on Nov. 11 while attempting to steal a bag from another woman in the same market.

The suspect who made a confessional statement said he used the stolen money to buy fairly used
-26-inch mattress
-a plasma television
– furniture cabinet
– Two Android phones, among other items.

The commandant assured members of the public that the suspects would be prosecuted at the end of the ongoing investigation

“I also want to use this medium to inform the good people of Osun that security is everybody’s business. We are soliciting proactive intelligence that can nip crime and criminality in the bud to serve you better,” Commandant Sotiyo said
