10th National Assembly: Barr Oludotun Sowemimo Warns Against Being A Rubber Stamp For Executive Action

An Abuja-based lawyer, Barr Oludotun Sowemimo has called on the 10th National Assembly, not to be a rubber stamp for Executive action.

Barr Sowemimo while speaking to journalists at the 1st Ekpemoriri Lamai lecture recently held in Abuja said it will be detrimental to the success of Bola Tinubu’s Administration.

He said, “We need a strong virile National Assembly to checkmate the actions of the Executive arm and judiciary. All these malfeasance actions by agents of the Executive arm to install leaders who will do their bidding whether good or bad is bound to create problems.

“As Nigerians are tired of bad governance, inflation and the fall of the education system, insecurity, unemployment, and corruption, our society is in dire need of real changes not doctored Executive actions with a premeditated end.

“I would like to use this medium to commend the actions of the new administration of President Bola Tinubu’s Administration. The government should be a government of national unity, any attempt to exclude any region will be detrimental to the success of this government which the Nigerian state and economy cannot afford.

“We are at a make-or-break stage. However, I hope the Executive actions will not be flash-in-the-pan actions, i.e. sensational without any true well meaningful solution to the myriads of problems facing the Nigerian polity.

“The fears and expectations of the people and the international community are palpable.p

“The Nigerian electorate is getting weary, confused and overwhelmed with the antics of the political class,

He further said, “All Nigerians should look inwards and pray to God to prosper our country. A situation where the federal government in February 2023 spent over 80% of our revenue on servicing our debt is scary, to say the least.

“President Bola Tinubu’s government has a lot of work to do and it is in all Nigerian’s interest individually, collectively that we all join hands to support him.

“I also like to use this medium to appeal to the new government to pay a lot of attention to the North East which has been badly affected because of the insurgency and the south-south region with the various intervention agencies like (North East Development Commission,(NEDC) and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) capacity building through scholarships and youth empowerment programmes should be continued. Education is an important tool to make the necessary changes in society.

“The continued fall in crude oil prices on the international market due to a fall in demand should be a great concern. We need to regulate the solid mineral sector so as to help to improve our nation’s revenue base.

“The last government through their Ministers, ie. Mr Adegbite and Hajiya Gbemi Saraki jointly tried a lot to rejuvenate the sector to be more viable but there is a need to continue steadfastly the concerted effort with the aim for more improvement in the sector by establishing refinery for the various mineral’s this will add value before exporting.
