IGP Accuses State Governors Of Undermining Opposing Political Parties’ Electioneering Campaigns

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, has accused some of the state governors of frustrating the electioneering campaigns of opposing candidates and political parties, ahead of the 2023 polls.

He directs the State Police Commissioners to henceforth stop the governors from preventing others from conducting their campaigns in any part of the country.

The police chief warns state police commissioners who yield to the pressure of governors to frustrate political parties’ electioneering campaigns they would be removed from office.

IGP Alkali read the riot act at the 2022 political party’s summit, organized by the Inter-Party Advisory Committee on Wednesday in Abuja.

The IGP, represented by the Deputy Inspector General in charge of operations, Dandara Mustapha, said the force headquarters had been flooded with complaints from political parties, including the ruling party, the APC.

According to him, some of the governors of attempting to manipulate the electioneering campaigns of their opponents, sponsoring thugs to pursue them, and removing their billboards and posters.

The police IG add that at times, the offices of opposing political parties are destroyed in their respective states.

He directs Police Commissioners in the states where such incidents occurred to arrest the hoodlums as well as their sponsors and charged them to courts.
