According to Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Nigeria is disintegrating quickly due to rising poverty rates.
Obi made the remarks during his presidential campaign in Taraba State on Wednesday at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo.
He also stated that only Nigerians can reclaim their party from the governing class, which has persisted to ensure that, despite the country’s enormous potential, its people continue to live in poverty.
“Nigeria is collapsing and it is doing so very fast. We have 133 million people in poverty and Taraba is no exception. It is happening here where we have millions of people who don’t know where the next meal will come from. That is what I and Baba-Ahmed want to reverse, Obi said.
Speaking also, his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed said, “Nigeria is waging a war; that war is not between tribes, it is not between faiths – it is between the good people of Nigeria and bad governance and that war we must win.”
Meanwhile, Peter Obi has promised to bring a permanent end to the incessant strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) if elected president next year.
He said the welfare of lecturers would be prioritized by his administration.
“The 50 months of ASUU strike in Nigeria since 1999 was a disaster against actualizing a productive nation through good education,” he said.
He said he would ensure that Nigeria moved from a consumption ta o production nation.
Obi also promised to make Taraba State a hub for economic activities.
The party promised stakeholders in the state that if voted into power, they will not govern the country from Abuja but rather from the states where the potential both human and capital of the country are located.
