Hamza Umar who set Hafsat Bala ablaze, is in police custody, the Police Command in Bauchi has said.
A statement signed by the command’s spokesman, SP Ahmed Wakil, on Monday in Bauchi, said the incident happened in Rafin Albasa Area of Bauchi.
Wakil said the suspect allegedly became furious and asked the victim to remove what she claimed to have buried in his compound but she refused and poured Hafsat Bala kerosene and set her ablaze in his compound, claiming she was a witch.
“On receiving the information, a team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) rushed to the scene and evacuated the victim to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi for immediate medical attention.
“On the other hand, a discreet Investigation has been instituted to unravel the exact circumstances that led to the situation.
“Meanwhile, the suspect will be charged to Court for the established Offences upon completion of the Investigation unfailingly, Wakil said.
He said a known notorious car snatcher in the state, is also in its custody.
“On 16/06/2023 at about 0910hrs, a distress call was received from a good Samaritan from Muda Lawal market Bauchi that on the same date at about 0905hrs a thief entered into Pontiac Vibe motorcycle vehicle in an attempted to cart away with it.
“On receiving the report, a team of Police detectives attached to C Divisional Police Headquarters Bauchi arrived scene where one Yusuf Muhammed “m” aged 34yrs of No. 24 Rijiyan Zaki Kano State was arrested alongside a Vehicle with reg no. AP-675-BAU Model Pontiac vibe black in colour chassis no. 5428XL62884242598 valued at one million five hundred thousand naira (1,500.000.00) was also recovered.
“Preliminary Investigation uncovered that the suspect was seen when the owner of the vehicle parked at the point and walked into the Muda Lawal for his endeavours when the car snatcher move to the car position and entered the car and started making attempts to dismantle the key sensor of the Car and Ignite it.
“During interrogation, the suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime and also mentioned one Mohammed Auwal “m” now at large as his accomplice.
“All efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing culprit; Investigation is ongoing after which the suspect will be charged to court for prosecution upon completion of Investigation for the established offences accordingly.
