HALO Presents Certificate To 24 Armoury Storekeepers And Store Managers Trainees In Abuja

The HALO Trust on Tuesday, 5th November 2024 presented certificates to 24 trainees from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Army, Nigeria Security, and Civil Defence Corps after completing HALO’s armoury storekeepers and store managers training.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, was represented at the presentation by AIG Armament, AIG Isyaku Muhamad, while the German Embassy was represented by Uduak-Abasi Akpabio.

As part of HALO’s efforts to promote women in weapons and ammunition management in Nigeria, 11 women (46%) completed the training.

The Country Director of the HALO Trust, Prince Ganiyu Otunba, said that for four weeks, trainees have undergone both theoretical and practical counter-diversion training, which has enhanced their ability to safely and securely manage state-held weapons and ammunition, which has become the main source of proliferation in Nigeria.

“The objective of the training is to increase the level of safeguarding of small arms and light weapons and small arms ammunition within Nigeria as a whole and, more specifically, among security service personnel.

“This safeguarding will also result in a safer community at large, fewer lives lost due to theft of small arms and light weapons and small arms ammunition, and enhanced human security.

The training course was for 15 days, with trainees drawn from the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, the Nigeria Police Force, the Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Force, and other security forces.

All the students have successfully completed the armoury storekeepers course as well as the armoury store managers course. Both the Storekeepers Course and the Store Managers Course were theoretical and practical in nature, and individual and group discussions form part of both courses, according to Prince Ganiyu Otunba.

The Armoury Storekeepers Course is an entry-level course designed to impact technical competence in weapons and ammunition management and qualify them to function as effective storekeepers and technical focal points for their unit. This course will provide security forces personnel with a broad understanding of armoury storekeeping and management practices.

After the completion of the Armoury Storekeeper Course, the Armoury Storekeeper will  be able to assist the Armoury Store Manager with regard to storekeeper responsibilities, armoury security and maintenance, weapon identification, weapon safety, weapon accounting, weapon handling drills, weapon storage, small arms ammunition identification and maintenance, UN classes of ammunition, ammunition accounting, armoury store maintenance and fire mitigation, and the issue and receipt of ammunition.

HALO believes that poorly secured or managed state-owned Small Arms Light Weapons (SALW) and Small Arms Ammunition (SAA) can contribute to armed violence in developing countries. Ensuring that arms are securely stored and appropriately managed reduces the likelihood that weapons illegally enter circulation or are used for illicit purposes.

ASP Shuaibu Aminu Ahmed, who spoke on behalf of the trainees, thanked the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for the opportunity of the training as well as the HALO Trust for the timely training.

This is the first armoury storekeepers and store managers training held by an international non-governmental organisation in Nigeria
