NFIU, Galaxy Backbone Pledge Enhanced Collaboration

The Director/CEO of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), Hafsat Abubakar Bakari and the Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Limited, Professor Ibrahim Adepoju Adeyanju have pledged to enhance the existing cooperation between the two organisations.

The collaboration is on capacity building, innovation and service provision. This was the outcome of a meeting between the two leaders alongside members of their management teams, which was held on Thursday at the Conference room of the NFIU in Abuja.

Professor Adeyanju led his team members on a courtesy call to the NFIU. DCEO Hajiya Bakari appreciated the visit and told her visitors that the NFIU is an innovative organisation that operates under the federal government, which is always “proactive and pushing everyone to achieve results”.

She said she is pleased with the services provided by Galaxy Backbone, adding, “We are interested in local content initiatives. Our data should be safe with companies such as yours”.

The NFIU Director also said the greylisting of Nigeria by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has led to increased cooperation among agencies in the country and expressed the hope that such collaborations must continue. “ It is only by working together that we can achieve results”, she said.

Speaking earlier, the Galaxy Backbone MD, Professor Adeyanju said they were at the NFIU to inform the Director and her management team about the services provided by his company.

He said Galaxy Backbone has over 5000 kilometres of fibre cables spread across 28 states. He also said they have two data centres in Abuja and Kano, which host government data and provide cloud services.

He said he hopes to collaborate more with the NFIU in on internet connectivity, cloud computing, cybersecurity and capacity building. “As partners, we can provide a high level of technology to aid your work,” he said. Part of the meeting was a presentation by NFIU’s Chief Operating Officer (Emerging Technologies & Innovation) Dr. Mohammed Jiya, who highlighted what the NFIU does and how it does it.

At the end of the meeting, the two leaders agreed to form a joint working committee to make the collaboration operational and effective.
