The Benue State Police Command reported that a public demonstration took place today at Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi, where numerous individuals gathered to express their concerns about recent security incidents in the state.
According to a press release on Sunday, 15th June 2025, signed by the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, while the police uphold the right to peaceful protest, they emphasise the importance of ensuring that such demonstrations remain lawful and non-violent.
In response to intelligence regarding the planned protest, tactical teams were swiftly deployed to monitor the situation and maintain order. Commissioner of Police for Benue State, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, took a proactive stance by visiting the protest site alongside Deputy Governor Barr Sam Ode, aiming to engage with demonstrators and appeal for calm.
However, the demonstrators declined to engage with the officials, and the protest devolved when disruptive elements attempted to attack the Deputy Governor. Police officers promptly intervened using non-lethal crowd control measures, including smoke and water cannons, to ensure the safety of all involved and facilitate the safe evacuation of the Deputy Governor. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported during this intervention.
Later in the day, another group of individuals reportedly sympathetic to the protest obstructed a roadway in Apir, on the outskirts of Makurdi. They forcibly stopped a truck, which was subsequently set ablaze, leaving the yet-to-be-identified driver trapped inside.
As part of ongoing efforts to restore order, the police have arrested fourteen suspects in connection with these incidents and are committed to prosecuting them accordingly. Investigations continue to identify other perpetrators and instigators of the violence.
The situation is now under control, and peace has been restored thanks to the collaborative efforts of the police and other security agencies.
The Benue State Police Command reiterates its support for lawful civic engagement while condemning any acts of violence, destruction, and lawlessness. They commend the conduct of peaceful protesters and reaffirm their dedication to maintaining peace and security throughout the state.
