The South West Youth Alliance has lambasted a self-acclaimed activist, Omoyele Sowore, for his malicious and unfounded post on his Facebook page against the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
In a press release issued on Friday in Ikeja, the Publicity Director of the Alliance, Adenike Ajanlekoko, stated that the oath of secrecy is part of the civil service tradition, requiring employees to take an oath of office and allegiance before their assumption of duty.
“The oath of secrecy is aimed at protecting classified information and maintaining confidentiality regarding official matters. This oath is a crucial part of maintaining the integrity and security of the government.”
“We wish to remind Omoyele Sowore that the oath of secrecy can be administered at any time, but that of the Nigeria police personnel has been done at the point of entry.”
“Therefore, it is baseless and malicious to say that IGP Egbetokun is using the oath of secrecy to thwart the upcoming police protest,” Ajanlekoko said.
She further stated that the oath of secrecy binds all police personnel to protect classified or sensitive government information from unauthorised disclosure.
“Violation of the oath of secrecy can lead to disciplinary actions, including dismissal from service, as it is considered a serious breach of conduct.”
“All police personnel know that the oath of secrecy serves as a critical mechanism to safeguard sensitive government information and uphold the integrity of the Nigerian civil service.”
“Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Act, as amended, does criminalise protests by police personnel, labelling such actions as mutiny. This is because the Act views any form of organised disobedience or rebellion against the police force’s authority, including protests, as a serious offence with severe consequences, the statement concluded.
