The Lagos State Police Command has reassured residents of comprehensive security measures across the state ahead of July 7, a date infamously associated with violent cult activities and reprisal attacks by rival groups.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, gave the assurance following a strategic operational meeting with commanders of Anti-Cultism Squads and Tactical Teams at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja.
According to a press release on Sunday, 6th July 2025, signed by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a decisive move to curb cult-related violence, the Command today arrested fifty-two (52) suspected cultists during coordinated raids across identified hideouts in Mushin. Intelligence revealed that the suspects were planning attacks in commemoration of the annual 7:7 Cultism Day. The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Police Command emphasised that July 7 has historically witnessed chaos, killings, and destruction in parts of the state due to clashes between violent cult factions. However, this year, the police say they are fully mobilised and strategically deployed to prevent any breakdown of law and order. Special units, including the Police Anti-Cultism Squad, Police Mobile Force (PMF), State Intelligence Department, and other tactical formations, have been activated to ensure peace and safety.
CP Jimoh warned hotel owners, recreational centres, and other facility managers not to allow their premises to be used for cult gatherings or criminal meetings. “The full weight of the law will be brought upon anyone who violates this directive,” he stated.
Parents and guardians were also urged to counsel their children and wards against engaging in cultism or violent activities. “The consequences are severe, and the Command will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute any offenders,” CP Jimoh added.
Reaffirming the Command’s readiness, CP Jimoh noted that preventive, deterrent, and intelligence-based strategies have been fully implemented to preserve the peace across the state. Officers and detectives remain on high alert and committed to protecting lives and property.
The Police Command encouraged Lagosians to continue with their lawful activities without fear while remaining vigilant. Suspicious activities should be reported promptly to the nearest police station or via the Command’s emergency hotlines: 08063299264 and 08065154338.
