The South West Youth Alliance (SWYA) has rebuked Sahara Reporters for its misleading and fictitious publication concerning police participation in the Lagos State Local Government Elections.
The highly fallacious report claimed “that the Inspector-General of Police had instructed each division to contribute ₦39,000 to cover transportation costs for deploying personnel to Lagos.”
Responding to the unprofessional reportage by Sahara Reporters, the Publicity Director of the SWYA, Adenike Ajanlekoko, clarified that the primary funding for the police comes from the Federal Government, as the Nigeria Police Force falls under federal oversight.
“However, many governors allocate monthly security votes—state-controlled funds—towards election policing. These are used to pay allowances, fuel vehicles, procure equipment, etc.
“Our findings show that the Inspector-General of Police never instructed any division to pay ₦39,000 for the transportation of police personnel to Lagos.
“We are fully aware of Sahara Reporters’ unholy alliance with certain elements determined to distract the Inspector-General of Police. It is, however, regrettable that the platform has allowed itself to be used for such a baseless and ill-fated mission.
“We urge Nigerians to ignore the misleading publication, which lacks merit and credibility,” the statement concluded.
