The South West Youth Alliance (SWYA) has dismissed what it described as false and misleading claims made by the AAC Presidential candidiate, Omoyele Sowore and his allies against the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and its leadership under the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Adenike Ajanlekoko, SWYA faulted allegations that Nigeria has an “illegal” Inspector General of Police, stressing that IGP Egbetokun was duly appointed in line with the constitution and has continued to lead the Force with professionalism and reforms.
The group also debunked claims that CP Akin Fakorede was a “notorious” former SARS commander, insisting that he served with distinction during his career and that attempts to malign him were unfounded.
SWYA further clarified that the Police under IGP Egbetokun is not targeting Sahara Reporters, but only committed to curbing fake news and misinformation that could endanger public order and national security.
On promotions within the Force, the group dismissed reports of irregularities, stating that all elevations have been based on merit, seniority, and institutional needs. It equally described as fabricated the claims that CP Fakorede confessed to holding a grudge against Sowore during his service in Rivers State.
Addressing Sowore’s claim that the Police legal case against him had collapsed, SWYA maintained that the matter remains active in court, with proceedings expected to continue next week. It added that no judge is under pressure or doing the Police’s bidding, contrary to Sowore’s suggestions.
The group also denied allegations of a “back-door deal” regarding Sowore’s passport, noting that its seizure was by court order and would follow due legal process.
“IGP Egbetokun is too focused on the enormous responsibility of policing Nigeria to be distracted by blackmail or propaganda,” SWYA said, urging Nigerians to disregard what it described as Sowore’s fabrications.
