Nigerian Women Innovators Shine At TICAD 9 In Japan

Nigerian women entrepreneurs took the spotlight at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), presenting groundbreaking tech-driven solutions that underscore the role of women in shaping Africa’s future.

The conference, themed “Co-Create Innovative Solutions with Africa”, gathered global leaders, investors, and development partners in Yokohama to explore new strategies for Africa’s growth. Among the highlights was a thematic session on the future of African startup ecosystems, where three Nigerian innovators—finalists from the IgniteHer Bootcamp for Women Entrepreneurs—pitched their solutions to Japanese investors and global stakeholders.

The IgniteHer Bootcamp, jointly organized by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), was designed to break barriers for women in tech, particularly challenges related to funding and mentorship.

Among the standout innovators was Kemisola Bolarinwa, founder of Nextwear Technologies, who presented an AI-powered device for early detection of breast abnormalities. Her innovation, targeting a critical public health challenge, showcased the impact of grassroots technology in healthcare.

Anita Ngeri, founder of Nibi’s Tech, pitched her edtech company’s mission to equip young Nigerians with digital skills in coding, robotics, artificial intelligence, and web design. Focused on the Niger Delta, Nibi’s Tech works with schools to bridge the digital divide and build the next generation of tech leaders.

Also featured was Odion Ikyo, co-founder of PrimeSafePath Solutions, who unveiled MaternalRecord Pro—Nigeria’s first AI-powered, multi-tenant data automation platform for Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs). The solution aims to replace outdated paper records, enable real-time data capture, and reduce maternal mortality rates through early risk detection.

Their participation aligns with Project NINJA, JICA’s flagship initiative that supports African startups by strengthening ecosystems, expanding funding opportunities, and fostering cross-border partnerships.

NITDA reaffirmed its commitment to backing women entrepreneurs and deepening global collaborations as part of Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda.

The presence of these innovators at TICAD 9 sent a strong message: empowering women in technology is not just about equity, but a strategic step toward sustainable economic growth and national development.
