The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has said the newly commissioned canine facility in Lagos will significantly strengthen the agency’s fight against illicit drugs in Nigeria.
Marwa stated this on Friday, September 26, 2025, while inaugurating the modern dog complex in Ikeja, Lagos, built and donated by the German government. He described the project as a milestone that will enhance NDLEA’s interdiction capacity, boost personnel morale, and further safeguard Nigeria’s future.
“May I assure all stakeholders that this facility will significantly drive our fight against illicit drugs, fulfil our core mandate, and secure the future of our nation,” Marwa said. He commended the German government for its consistent support, citing the remarkable seizure of 74.119kg of captagon at Apapa seaport in 2021 as one of many successful operations aided by NDLEA’s sniffer dogs.
According to him, the canine unit has been instrumental in the seizure of over 17.9 metric tonnes of illicit substances, despite past challenges of poor infrastructure. He said the new facility, which construction began in August 2024 and completed on schedule, will address operational gaps and provide a dignified environment for the unit.
Marwa expressed appreciation to German Consul General in Lagos, Mr. Daniel Krull, the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), and their partners in Berlin, Saxony, and Sachsen-Anhalt, who supported the project.
In his remarks, Consul General Krull said the success of NDLEA’s operations benefits not only Nigeria but also Germany and the wider region. “The amazing work of your agency under your leadership is very important, not only for Nigeria but for the region and for us in Germany. We congratulate you and look forward to more fruitful cooperation,” he said.
Similarly, the Deputy Head of Section IZ14 BKA, Berlin, Mr. Florian Bulow, described the NDLEA partnership as one of BKA’s longest-running police capacity-building projects. He likened the cooperation to a marriage built on trust, shared goals, and teamwork, noting that such collaboration has yielded remarkable results in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.
