“Her Red Secret” was written by 15-year-old Angel Amaka Oko and published for a general audience.
The story entails 11-year-old Anna, who is taken in by her distant aunt after the sudden death of her parents.
However, it soon becomes apparent that her aunt and everyone around her are hiding a big secret from her. It is a coming-of-age story where a young girl learns that life is not a bed of roses. In the face of difficulties, she develops resilience and courage.
The young author was inspired by the everyday struggles of a Nigerian child who lacks a supportive system.
The plight of young orphan girls—girls who have lost their homes and whose futures seem to be in danger because society forgets about them—is well documented.
The book will help inspire and motivate other young women, not only in Nigeria but in Africa as a whole.
