The Integrity Youth Alliance has said that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, does not hold any personal grudge against the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, over his constant referral to him as an ‘illegal IGP.’
In a press release on Saturday in Lagos, the publicity secretary of the Alliance, Danjuma Lamido, said that IGP Kayode Egbetokun is not an “illegal IGP,” as he was duly appointed by President Tinubu as the IGP in June 2023 for four years.
“Section 7(6) of the Police Act 2020 allows the Inspector General of Police to complete a four-year term irrespective of age or years of service.
“IGP Egbetokun is busy with professionalising the Nigeria police rather than “dealing with Sowore,” who is inconsequential. Sowore does not have flesh the IGP will pound on.
“We make bold to say that the invitation extended to Sowore is not motivated by Sowore’s nickname for Egbetokun—’Illegal “IG,” Lamido said.
The alliance called on Omoyele Sowore to face his case of resisting and obstructing public officers, disobedience to lawful order, acts intended to cause grievous harm or prevent arrest, compelling action by intimidation, reckless & negligent acts, refusal to assist public servants, and cyberstalking, without name-dropping the IGP.
