
Bayelsa State was thrown into mourning on Thursday, December 11, 2025, following the sudden death of the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo. He was 60.
According to an official statement from the state government, Senator Ewhrudjakpo had been carrying out his duties earlier in the day when he collapsed while heading to a scheduled meeting within his office. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was later confirmed dead.
The state described his passing as a painful and monumental loss, noting his distinguished career in public service. Before becoming Deputy Governor in 2020, he served as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure and represented Bayelsa West Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

Governor Douye Diri expressed deep condolences to the late Deputy Governor’s wife, Barr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, their children, the Ewhrudjakpo family, the Ofoni Federated Community, former Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, and all citizens of the state.
In honour of the late Deputy Governor, Governor Diri declared a three-day state mourning beginning Friday, December 12, 2025, with all flags to be flown at half-mast.
The Governor prayed for comfort for the bereaved family and the entire state.
