The Benue State Police Command has issued a press release to clarify misleading information circulating on social media regarding an alleged attack by herdsmen in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area.
The police emphasize the importance of accurate reporting and wish to address the situation promptly.
According to a press release on Saturday, June 21st 2025, signed by the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, on the evening of June 21, 2025, at approximately 8:00 PM, the police received reports of a shooting incident along Akume Road in Wannune, where one Aondoakaa Yayough was tragically shot and killed. In response, a team of detectives was dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, local witnesses identified the attacker as Saater Aii, an individual reportedly known to have a criminal background. Although local security managed to disarm him, the suspect escaped from the area.
Two additional individuals sustained injuries during the attack and have since been transported to the hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

An AK-47 rifle, believed to be the weapon used in the shooting, has been recovered by police, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect. The Benue State Police Command urges the public to remain vigilant against misinformation and to consult credible sources for accurate news.
“This incident has no relation to herdsmen activity in the area, and we implore community members to refrain from sharing unverified information,” stated DSP Udeme Edet, Police Public Relations Officer for the Benue State Command.
The police have continued their investigation to ensure the safety and security of residents in Tarka Local Government Area.
