Labour Party Chair, Senator Nenadi Usman, Outlines Reforms, Assures Stability Ahead Of 2027 Elections

0

Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, has reaffirmed her commitment to repositioning the party for greater success in the 2027 general elections. She made the pledge on Monday, August 18, 2025, while addressing participants at the Coalition for the Defence of Democracy’s (COPDEM) Virtual People’s Parliament programme, where she spoke on “Stabilizing the Labour Party: Challenges & Prospects.”

Usman recalled the party’s impressive performance in the 2023 polls, where it secured one governorship seat, eight senatorial seats, 34 House of Representatives seats, and numerous positions in state assemblies, describing it as a “loud testament to Nigerians’ desire for change.”

She, however, lamented the internal leadership crisis that followed, disclosing that attempts by a former national chairman to return to office despite his expired tenure caused disruptions. According to her, both the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, and a subsequent Federal High Court ruling on August 15, 2025, affirmed the expiration of his tenure and validated her leadership.

“The continued disobedience by a few individuals, aided by external forces, is not just an attack on the Labour Party but part of a broader attempt to weaken opposition parties in Nigeria,” Usman said.

Outlining the way forward, she announced that the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) has approved a strategic reform plan, which includes:

A nationwide membership registration and revalidation drive targeting 10 million new members.

Ward, local government, and state congresses, culminating in a national convention to elect substantive leadership before the end of 2025.

The Labour Party chairman also addressed the wave of defections by elected officials, admitting that inadequate screening of candidates during the 2023 elections contributed to the problem. She assured that going forward, only individuals aligned with the party’s philosophy would be allowed to contest under its platform.

“Labour Party will no longer be a stepping stone for opportunists, but a home for patriots committed to service and transformation,” she declared.

Despite challenges, Usman expressed confidence in the party’s resilience, insisting that ongoing reforms would ensure the Labour Party not only replicates but surpasses its 2023 successes. She called on members and supporters to remain actively engaged in strengthening the party.

“Beyond observation, I urge you all to dedicate yourselves to shaping the future of our party and country,” she said, while commending COPDEM for its support and advocacy.

Police Trains 192 Officers On Forensic Intelligence Solution As Three Arrested For Cybercrime

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), in partnership with Radio Tactics Group Limited, has concluded a nationwide specialized training on the Athena Forensic Intelligence Solution (AFIS), aimed at strengthening the digital and forensic capacity of its personnel to combat cyber-related crimes.

The training, which ran from July 9 to August 15, 2025, involved 192 officers drawn from the 36 State Commands, the Federal Capital Territory, and 10 specialized formations. Facilitators from the NPF National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) and Radio Tactics Group trained participants on threat identification, digital evidence extraction, communication and location data analysis, biometric capture, and the use of forensic hotlists for intelligence matching.

According to the Force, the new skills will enhance operational efficiency and bolster its ability to tackle cybercrime and complex investigations nationwide.

In a related development, operatives of the NPF-NCCC have arrested three suspects — Gbenga Samuel, Dele Titus, and Olalekan Oke, in Abuja and Lagos for alleged cyberstalking, identity theft, and online fraud.

Investigations revealed that on July 18, 2025, the suspects hacked into a victim’s WhatsApp account and demanded ₦3 million to prevent the release of confidential data. A detailed forensic analysis led to their arrest, the recovery of the account, and the uncovering of an ongoing organized cybercrime network now under investigation.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to modern and digitalized approaches in combating cybercrime, emphasizing continuous training and re-training of personnel in line with global best practices.

From Yelewata To Guma: How The Police Stopped Two Tragedies In Their Tracks

By Shehu Usman

The Nigerian Police Rapid Response Team stationed in Benue has foiled what could have been another national tragedy of monumental proportions. This was reported by Daily Trust. Although three farmers sadly lost their lives in the incident, the situation could have been far worse if not for the police’s proactiveness.

Following the Yelewata massacre in Benue State by bandits, a horrific incident that sent shivers down the spine of the nation, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, made a remark in his speech that caught my attention. He noted that whenever such attacks occur, we must not forget that there have also been numerous other planned attacks successfully foiled by the police and other security agencies.

At the time, I am sure many believed he made that statement merely to defend the inability of his men to avert the Yelewata tragedy. But recent events show that the IGP was not being economical with the truth. Without the tireless efforts of the police and other security agencies in curtailing these marauding murderers, the situation could have been far worse than it is today.

Our police officers are working tirelessly, often silently, to curtail crime, yet we do not amplify their heroics nearly as much as we amplify their shortcomings. Imagine if the bandits had succeeded in attacking Yelewata again, the news would have dominated headlines nationwide. But because the attack was foiled, the story risks fading into the background. And it wasn’t only in Yelewata; a similar plot was also thwarted in Guma Local Government Area.

Yes, we have every right to demand accountability from our security agencies, especially the police, being the lead agency in internal security. However, in doing so, we must also acknowledge their relentless efforts in combating crime, often in the face of scarce resources, outdated equipment, and dangerous working conditions.

Policing in Nigeria is a high-risk duty. Officers frequently work under intense pressure, covering vast territories with inadequate manpower, while confronting criminals who are often better armed and better funded. Despite these challenges, there are countless untold stories of bravery, operations that never make it to the headlines because the attacks were stopped before they could happen.

The grief of Yelewata still lingers—families torn apart, dreams cut short, and a community left with scars that may never fully heal. Each life lost is a reminder of what is at stake when security fails, and each life saved is proof of the value of vigilance. As citizens, our voices must continue to demand justice, transparency, and efficiency from those entrusted with our safety. But alongside those demands, we must also recognise and amplify the quiet victories, those moments when disaster was averted because men and women in uniform stood their ground.

The foiled attacks in Yelewata and Guma are not the end of our security challenges, but they are moments worth noting. They reaffirm that while criticism keeps our institutions accountable, encouragement fuels their morale. In the balance between the two lies the path to a safer Nigeria.

SWYA Counters Allegations Of Police Maltreatment Against Sowore

The South West Youth Alliance has dismissed reports alleging that the Nigeria Police Force maltreated former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, during his recent detention.

The clarification follows a publication by Sahara Reporters quoting the Pan-Africanist Movement, State55, which accused the police of brutality against Sowore.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Director, Adenike Ajanlekoko, SWYA described the claims as “false and malicious,” insisting that Sowore was lawfully detained in line with legal provisions and was never assaulted while in police custody.

The group further stated that contrary to reports, Sowore’s alleged injuries were “stage-managed theatrics” aimed at attracting public sympathy and evading justice.

“Under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Nigeria Police Force has consistently upheld professionalism, due process, and respect for human rights,” the statement read.

SWYA also urged State55 to desist from spreading “baseless propaganda” and called on Sowore to refrain from actions capable of undermining national security, including incitement, cyberstalking, and forgery.

The group reaffirmed its confidence in the police and called on Nigerians to disregard what it described as misleading narratives intended to distract from due process and accountability.

Ojulari Breaks Silence, Refutes Claims Of Paying Bribe

0

The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mr Bayo Ojulari, has finally broken silence on SaharaReporters’ recent publication that Adegboyega Fasasi, the President’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), and Usman Shugaba, the Chief Personal Security Officer, accepted a $1.5 million bribe from him to facilitate access to Mr President. The GLNNPC boss described the reportage as wholly untrue, malicious, and devoid of any kind of reliable proof.

“These are unfounded allegations,” he said. He and his associates never proposed, planned, or approved such a payment to the president’s security aides. “The accusation is merely a smear campaign intended to mislead the public and cast doubt on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s leadership,” he insisted.

“It is crucial to emphasize that the sensational claims attributed to anonymous “sources” have not been supported by any evidence. The alleged confessional stories are hearsay, cannot be verified, and do not meet any reliable journalistic standards.” Ojulari does not need the permission of security details to contact Mr President when he can easily put a call through, another top official hinted.

SaharaReporters is known for publishing stories that haven’t been checked out that are meant to make people distrustful, spread false information, and cause political strife. This latest lie follows the same old pattern of making things sound more exciting than they really are.

It is recommended that Nigerians view the report with the contempt it merits. There are already constitutional processes in place for Security Agencies to deal with accusations of corruption, so if true, let SaharaReporters publish the evidence to the claims or be sanction in line with legal processes

Mr. Ojulari is steadfast in his commitment to upholding accountability and transparency within NNPC Limited, and he will not be sidetracked by politically driven lies meant to damage reputations and undermine government.
