Dickson, A Tested Leader, Is What Bayelsa West Need – Bayelsa Elders

0

Prominent Bayelsa political leaders and elders have called on the people of Sagbama and Ekeremor to give the requisite support to the former Governor òf Bayelsa State, the Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson in the bid for the Bayelsa West Senatorial slot in the National Assembly.

The elders agreed with unanimity that Hon Dickson is the best candidate for the Senatorial slot and should be supported by all to fill the vacant position.

They stressed that Bayelsa West and the Ijaw nation require a person with a vast knowledge of the workings of the National Assembly like Dickson who served the area effectively as a member of the House of Representatives.

The political leaders noted that there shouldn’t have been any need for a contest for the vacant position if not for the need for election in a democracy to fill the position going by the former Governor’s antecedents, achievements and demonstrated commitment to the development of the Ijaw nation.

The leaders and elders, in a statement signed by Former commissioner, former Chairman Governing Council, Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe, Hon Etiffa Bekeakpo and former Senior Special Assistant to President Jonathan on Household and Domestic Matters, Chief Sylbriks Obiriki on Thursday, said that the political leaders after extensive deliberations decided to go for the ex-Governor because of his track record as a politician who displayed incontrovertible commitment to the defence and promotion the interest of the Ijaw nation.

They described former Gov Dickson as an asset who is available to be utilized to contribute to the pressing need to defend the burning issues of interest to Bayelsa, the Ijaw nation and the Niger Delta.

They said that it was not in doubt that ex-Governor Dickson has the experience and proven capacity to defend the interest of his people, the state, the Ijaw nation, the Niger Delta and indeed the country.

They recalled that the former Governor who has a vast network of contacts registered an exemplary performance as a member of the House òf Representatives even before his election as Governor and was perfectly good for the Senate.

Etiffa and Obriki added that the former Governor gave the necessary attention to the projection of critical issues of concern to the Ijaw nation such as Resource Control, restructuring, and others across the country.

They said further that the leaders would embark on massive mobilization of the people of the area to give him the expected support.

“The senate is the highest law making body in Nigeria therefore you need a man like the Honourable Henry Dickson who understands the politics of the country who has a vast knowledge in law making having served as a member of the House of Representatives. He is more qualified than any other politician from the Bayelsa west senatorial district with his capacity for networking and vast contacts.

“He has made his marks in governance and has proved to be a tested leader with incontrovertible interest in the development of our society.

“He has the experience and the capacity to articulate the issues affecting Bayelsa, the Ijaw nation the Niger Delta and Nigeria. He has done it before and is trusted to do it again.

“We call on all to mobilize support to achieve the desire of the Bayelsa West people for effective representation at the Senate.

“We thank all those who have endorsed him for being on the favored side of history. As soon as this Corona virus saga is over, we would embark on massive mobilization in the pursuit of the collective will of our people.

“It is stating the obvious that he is the best for Bayelsa West, Bayelsa, the Ijaw Nation, the Niger Delta and Nigeria.” The statement added

COVID-19 And The Corruption In Security Personnel Allowances

When President Buhari on 30th March, 2020 declared lock down of Lagos, Ogun and Abuja, he ordered the security personnel to enforce the order.

In the process, the Nigeria Police been the lead agency mounted security check points at the borders of the three State respectively.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Federal Road Safety Corps were attached to the Security arrangement to ensure full compliance with the Presidential order.

In such special duty, allowances and welfare of personnel are of high Paramount in order to avoid compromise.

Investigation by Swift Reporters revealed that for the past 7 weeks of the lock down, allowances of Police, Civil Defence and Road Safety are yet to be paid in the FCT.

Reports indicated that each personnel are entitled to N21,000 weekly.

Aside the weekly allowance, they are entitled to lunch everyday while the vehicles of the security agencies are supposed to be fueled on daily basis.

“We have not received our salary not to talk of our allowances. No pure water for the past 7 weeks; no  food has been given to us, a Police officer confided in Swift Reporters.

An angry Civil Defence officer said, “We have been here for the past 7 weeks, nothing was heard about allowances. I am yet to get April salary and I spent roughly N1500 on transportation on daily basis.

Speaking on the same allowances, a FRSC personnel said that Road Safety personnel are worst hit as nobody is even talking about their allowances.

Swift Reporters further gathered that what brought out the anger of the security personnel is their replacement with FCT Ministerial Taskforce after seven weeks of working with vigours.

“How can they replace us with Taskforce after working for a month and two weeks without pay? This is unfair, it has weakened our morale to work and this will affect our work whenever we have special duty, a personnel with the Police said.

Efforts to reach the Taskforce Chairman, Attah Ikharo and the FCT Police PPRO, Manzah as at the time of going to press, proved abortive.

COVID19: We Are Prioritizing Digital Solution – DG NITDA

0

The Director General of National Information Technology Development Agency, Mallam Kashifu Abdullahi Inuwa has said his agency is prioritizing digital solution because that is the only thing working during this COVID19.

Inuwa said this during the Nigeria Covid-19 Innovation Challenge Initiative monitored by Swift Reporters online.

“And the pandemic is accelerating technology trends shaping the future of digital world and digital economy in general. Imagine being in this crisis withouAt digital technology, Inuwa said.

“This programme is one of the initiatives aimed at using indigenous digital technology to contain the virus and cushion the economic impact.

“Our objective is to mitigate the health and social impacts of COVID-19 in Nigeria using innovative technologies. And we hope the challenge will deliver on the following:
Showcase relevant innovative technologies developed by Nigerians towards COVID-19 and the future pandemics, Inuwa reiterated.

Excerpt is the full text of his speech:

Thank you for honoring our invitation first and foremost let me start by wishing you and your families the best health and safety during this trying time.

It is pleasure and delight to welcome you all to this novel event organized under the leadership of the HM of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, to crowd source for novel ideas that can help us contain the novel coronavirus ravaging our world.

Nigeria Covid-19 innovation challenge initiative was conceptualized, implemented and opened call for application under lockdown. This was unprecedented because the HM has created a sense of stability for us to work virtually while our world has been under lockdown.

2019 ended in a pretty solid shape. Our economy had stabilized, growth rate had increased from -1.62% in 2016 to 2.29% in 2019. Our budget cycle has changed to January to December.

We celebrated 2020 with high hope and we were optimistic at the beginning of the year that it will be a great year and a great decade.

Soon after the celebration things started falling apart. Coronavirus that started as an outbreak in the Wuhan City of China spreads to other parts of the world. And on 13th March, WHO declared the virus as pandemic.

Today we are confronted with a crisis like no other. A dual crisis, Health and economic crisis. What is going on is unprecedented that you and I have not seen in living memory.

The virus is causing health crisis, and the lockdown needed to keep the virus in check is causing economic crisis. What was normal just few weeks ago such as going to school, attending religious congregation, and socializing with family and friends, is now a huge risk.

This is not the first time humanity is tested with a crisis, of recent we have seen Tsunami and Global financial meltdown and we heard about great depression, black plague and Spanish flu.

I believe we will overcome this crisis the same way humanity defeated the previous crises but the timing is not under our control. What is under our control is how we keep the virus under control and prepare for the post-pandemic.

Therefore, this initiative, the Nigeria COVID-19 innovation challenge is aimed at identifying innovative ideas from our talented youth, incubate, prototype and develop the ideas into a digital solutions that can help us contain the virus and prepare us for post covid era.

We are prioritizing digital solution because that is the only thing working during this pandemic. And the pandemic is accelerating technology trends shaping the future of digital world and digital economy in general. Imagine being in this crisis without digital technology.

Our life would have been miserable, therefore our recovery and exit strategy should be based on what is working now. As a nation we can have all the technologies and talent but to extract value we need clear objectives and mechanism.

Our broader objective is fast recovery to normal and our mechanism is our National Digital Economy Strategy and plan. Which highlights initiatives for Digital Nigeria. The journey started on 28th November when president Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR unveiled the draft strategy.

And now the pandemic is accelerating the journey. My Boss and My Mentor the HM of Communications and Digital Economy is championing the journey and he has been providing the leadership and NITDA is working on various initiatives to help realize the objective of digital economy.

This programme is one of the initiatives aimed at using indigenous digital technology to contain the virus and cushion the economic impact.

Our objective is to mitigate the health and social impacts of COVID-19 in Nigeria using innovative technologies. And we hope the challenge will deliver on the following:
Showcase relevant innovative technologies developed by Nigerians towards COVID-19 and the future pandemics.

Facilitate and enhance processes along the prevention-detection-treatment value chain of COVID-19.

Cushion the financial and social impact of COVID-19 during and after the pandemic in Nigeria and possibly beyond.

Finally, I would like to welcome you once more and thank our partners. We look forward to a stronger collaboration among stockholders to defeat this invisible common enemy to humanity.

Thank you for your attention, take responsibility, stay calm and stay positive. May Almighty bless you and bless Nigeria.

You Reap Sorrows When You Sow Arrows

By Bala Ibrahim

The caption above is a famous Filipino proverb that supports the saying, What goes around, comes around. The two adages are rules of conduct that are used to lay emphasis on the fact that, the consequences of one’s actions will have to be dealt with eventually. If a person treats other people badly, he or she will eventually be treated badly by someone else. A scenario similar to what is envisaged in Karma.

For Nigeria, this week seems to have brought the nostalgia of this concept of karma, and the nemesis of the theory of retribution. Three important things happened almost in succession within the week, that strengthened the maxim that, our actions, whether good or bad, would always carry a consequence.

The first was the announcement by the Nigerian government on Monday, that it is in receipt of $311 million “looted” by late General Sani Abacha. I put the word looted in inverted commas, because it is a contentious subject that can only be decided by posterity. Whether Abacha looted the money, or the money was assigned for some purposes, the fact that Abacha is not alive to give his own side of the story, makes the issue a subject that can only be determined by God, on the day of judgement. More so, the money arrived at a time of pandemic, when the whole world is under trial.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Umar Gwandu, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, said approximately $311,797,866.11 of the Abacha loot was repatriated from the US and Jersey. The government later gave details of how the money would be spent.

Although he is not the first to die on the throne, Abacha happens to be the most vilified leader Nigeria ever had. Ironically, because of sycophancy, even those who were praising and applauding him when he was alive, took to the take-down taxi.

In his song, who the cap fits, Bob marley said, We’re past the worse. Hypocrites and parasites
Will come up and take a bite
And if your night should turn to day
A lot of people would run away.

Except for friends and family, who speak so honestly about the late General, Abacha’s obituaries hardly carry any tributes. Why we take delight in the criticism of the dead, I don’t know. But those who sow arrows, would surely reap sorrows, one day.

The second was the memorabilia of former president Umaru Musa Yar’adua, who died in office on the 5th of this month, 2010. As usual, Nigerians took time to shower encomiums on the late leader, whose presidential tenure they tainted with invectives. I have chosen to ignore the negative, and present two out of the many positive comments:

“On this day nine years ago I lost a friend, colleague, brother, and boss, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. He was a selfless leader who placed national interest above personal and ethnic gains.
President Yar’Adua was a man of integrity with a humble spirit who always took upon himself the burden of national reconciliation, peace-building, and democratic consolidation. He used the opportunity he had in public service to build bridges of love, foster unity and give hope to Nigerians. Today, I remember and celebrate him for the works that he had done. Peace he lived for and homes of peace he built. Democracy he loved and democracy he nurtured. We will always remember you for your service. A servant leader truly you remain”. – former president GEJ.

“Despite our political differences, President Yar’Adua was unarguably a patriot because of his passion for the masses and his reversal of policies he believed were hurting ordinary Nigerians. Every leader should be given the credit that he deserves. Whether you agree with President Yar’Adua politically or not, I must say that history will always record his honest and sincere service to the country”-PMB.

Yar’adua’s humility and high sense of responsibility, have combined to earn him deep admiration, despite his short stay in office. From the same song of Bob Marley, who the cap fits, came, Some will hate you, pretend they love you now. Then behind they try to eliminate you. But who Jah bless, no one curse.Thank God.

Thank God indeed, because those who sow arrows, would surely reap sorrows.

The third happened yesterday Thursday the 7th, and it came with a more sympathetic headline: COVID-19 hits Kano ex-commissioner Magaji, who gloated over Abba Kyari’s death. The media was awash with the story, one of which goes thus, “Dismissed Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure in Kano State, Engineer Mu’azu Magaji has tested positive for COVID-19. It happened less than three weeks after he lost his job for gloating on Facebook over the death of Malam Abba Kyari, President Buhari’s chief of staff. Kyari died on 17 April in Lagos, of coronavirus complications. He was buried in Abuja on 18 April. Now things have turned round and Magaji is now hoping he does not end up in Gudu Cemetery Abuja like Abba Kyari”.

Philosophers talk about Poetic justice as a system in which virtue is rewarded and viciousness or aggressive behavior is punished. So depending on upbringing and exposure, human beings take to certain mode of behavior that reflects in their manners.

COVID-19: Investigate Alleged Manhandling Of Benue Index Case (Mrs. I. O. Suzan Lawani), Eze Charges Buhari

.…Suspects PDP using her detention to blackmail, smear Nigeria’s image
….Charges NCDC to replicate the Madagascar experience
……Asks for the disbandment of the FG Palliative Committee

Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and erstwhile National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has called on President Mohammadu Buhari to swiftly intervene over the continued detention and dehumanizing treatment of a woman, Mrs. Suzan Lawani, the alleged index case of the dreaded Covid-19 in Benue State.

In a statement made available to media houses both within and outside Nigeria, the party chieftain expressed disappointment over the manner the government of Benue state allegedly went about the handling of the situation, describing it as contrary to every global rules governing the health profession and professionals which is anchored on confidentiality.

Recall that a video of Mrs. Laweni narrating the circumstances that led to her detention in a health facility in Benue and later Abuja as well as the inhumane and agonizing treatment she is currently suffering from the hands of health officials attached to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), has gone viral and is currently commanding wider circulation in the media space.

From the viral clip, Mrs. Laweni lamented thus:

“Good Afternoon fellow Nigerians. My name is Susan Idoku Okpeni Laweni, coming to you live from my forceful detention centre (43days in forceful detention)”.

“Yes I am the lady that was accused of first Covid index Case in Benue State by the Benue State Government”.

“My story is that I came from England on the 22nd of March for my Mum’s burial and that was it. I was jet lagged, like everybody has asked: what took you to the hospital? I was jet lagged, went to the hospital to have myself checked. The doctor said they were going to check me which they did. Said that I had little bit of temperature and I said I had no temperature because I was only having jet lag. My body was paining me because I had travelled for almost 24-25hrs in the past two days. Well, he said your temperature is a bit high, I am going to keep you here and check you and I said no problem, I am a law abiding citizen. Yes keep me. He kept me in the hospital overnight, administered anegestics, the pain was gone. Ready to go home the following day, he told me that he was going to do the standard procedure which was to do swap by the Benue State Government. By the way the hospital is Grace Scottish hospital in Markurdi. I said okay, I am okay with that. Called some two men, who did the swap on my left nose and on my throat. Asked when I was going to get the result, he said in 24hrs. 24hrs passed,I didn’t get the result”.

“The next day which was 27th March, the doctor came to me in the evening to tell me that I was Covid-19 positive from the result that they did, from the swap that they took. I asked where is the result, he said he doesn’t have the result that he was only told and am asking; if I have COVID-19, why don’t I get a result of it? Well he went away and my friend who was also a doctor came to tell me that the Benue State Governor, Ortom was already doing a press conference with my name. A doctor just came to tell me and a press conference was already going on with my name as the first index Case in Benue State. Went down to ask the doctor what all this was about, all I was told was that they were helping me to fight with the state Government. On what basis, what has happened? I don’t know, where is the result? I don’t have. That was it. I told them that if this was a drama or Nigerian Nollywood movie, I wasn’t going to be part of it. Went back upstairs to get my bag to leave the hospital because I was thinking this was getting out of hand now and this time I was okay, nothing was wrong with me. I didn’t have a headache, I only had body pain and I knew it was because of the journey I did or the journey I made”.

“Before going Upstairs, and coming down, the hospital had been called off by armed men, ambulance and the deputy Governor and his team came and removed me to an isolation centre because that was a community hospital and I knew well, whether it was staged or it wasn’t staged, Nigerians will judge for themselves. I was taken to Isolation centre, dehumanised, traumatized, because already my name was in the press and gone all over. I have been video taped, recorded and sent on the internet already. Stayed at the Isolation centre for 10days and then moved to Abuja”.

“Nigerians, I am crying out because I know there are people who do not have a voice to speak for themselves. I know people who have been dehumanised, traumatized and stigmatized like the Benue State Governor has done to me. He has stigmatized me with COVID-19 already that I do not have. I am brought to Abuja here, what else would have been done, enquiries would have been made. I wasn’t given the result until after 15days in Abuja. Precisely, 8th of April, they gave me the report which I can publish for Nigerians to see”.

“On that report, it stated that I came into this country, on the 28th of Feb. On the 28th of February, I was still in England. It also stated in that report that I presented myself to the hospital to the hospital with fever and stooling on the 16th of March which wasn’t true. On the 16th of March,I was in England,I came into Nigeria on the 22nd of March, I went to the hospital on the 24th of March. So in the report, there was nothing today that, the report was my report. Based on that, the Nigerian centre for disease control, still using that report and the name on it and before I forget to say, the birth day,the date that was put in that report said 58 and 62 and I am not, 58 and I am not 62, I am 50+ not near that age. So I was still wandering whose report was that.

But it’s still that report, that the National centre for disease control are still working on and still holding me here. Even if I have Covid19 was it not right for the state government or Ortom himself and his team, the commissioners and people concerned in Benue state to counsel me and speak to me, instead of taking my name to the press? Is that the standard for the world health Organization (WHO)? Is that what the World Health Organization said should be done to patients with Covid 19? Why I that of Nigerians different? Permit me to say now that even if anybody has Covid19 in Nigeria, they will not come out because of stigmatization. They would be so afraid for their life, like I am afraid for my life.

43 days and I am still forcefully detained. They would be afraid for their lives because nobody will come out and then the work of the NCDC will not have any effect because people are scared to be stigmatized, like I have been done to. Fellow Nigerians what is the rationale behind what is happening to me. NCDC have done three test on me since I am in this forceful detention centre. They did a test on the 10th, they did one on the 15th, they did one on the 17th, as I speak to you, I do not have the result of one test that he been conducted here . And I am still been harrased to do another test”.

“Nigerians, if you were to be in my position, will you do another test without result? If they want me to do a test, and would want to force medication down my throat, which I have not taken in the past 43days I have not taken any medication,I have not had any symptoms till now and they want me to take medication and still continue with the test, that is what everybody is saying. This woman is stubborn, this woman is rude, this woman has said that they don’t know what to do. No,Nigerians I am crying out for the sake of my other fellow Nigerians whom might find themselves in this situation. Why would I not be given the test that was done? If I have to see another doctor,if I have to go back to my base, what do I present to them? I don’t have a result for the three test that was done and everyday they call in Psychiatrist doctors to come and talk to me and think I am insane”.

“Nigerians, I am crying out, please amplify my voice. The Benue state Government must apologise to me and also apologize to Nigerians for stigmatizing me and also making it impossible for NCDC to their work properly because nobody is going to come out to say they have Covid19 if they have it . For the fear of stigmatization”.

It can be deduced from the explanation of Mrs. Laweni that there exists a potpourri of issues that require urgent government investigation to douse the tension already created among citizens by the unguarded manner the PDP led state government went about the situation.

“After watching the video and how she was lured into detention, I can only deduce that her case is just an implementation of a wicked and devious plot to smear the good image of Nigeria by the PDP agents through the PDP government in Benue State”, Eze said.

The party chief stressed that such scenario is capable of diminishing public confidence on the reality of the virus and bringing the efforts of the Federal Government at tackling its spread to naught.

The extent of maltreatment suffered by this woman who does not show symptom of any ailment, let alone being a carrier of the deadly COVID 19 is an exhibition of ineptitude and crass maladministration by the Benue state government and therefore calls for a public apology as demanded.

Contrary to claims by the Benue state government, the woman merely had a jet lag, having spent over 24 hours on in air en route Nigeria from England for her mother’s burial. She was then accused of suffering from the deadly Conavirus by the state government with falsified report which does not in any way tally with her documents.

Eze described the action of the state government as dishonesty, evidencing unnecessary desperation to have a Covid-19 case, probably with the inordinate intention of attracting sympathy, financial donations and largesse from Federal Government, corporate organizations and spirited individuals.

“I am pleading with Mr. President not only to investigate this case with the amount of seriousness it deserves but also save the woman from further unnecessary hardship and dehumanizing treatment by authorising her immediate release by agents that want to tarnish the image of our great nation.”

Accordingly, Chief Eze commended the Boss Mustapha-led Presidential Task Force on COVID 19 Pandemic for the commitment it has so far exhibited to secure the lives of Nigerians from the deadly virus. He further appealed to the Committee and particularly the Ministry of Health to collaborate with Nigerians who have developed possible cure and ready to join forces with the Federal Government to help in the fight against the deadly virus.

“I am convinced that with the necessary support and encouragement, Nigerians are capable of surpassing whatever this Scientists in Madagascar may have developed to tackle and contain the spread of this virus in their country. Looking down on our scientists and traditional Herbalists is not the best way to develop a nation like ours”. Eze said.

Owing to the obvious fact that Nigerians are not feeling the impact of the so called distribution and circulation of the palliative, Eze called for the disbandment and investigation of the ministry and committee in charge of FG’s palliatives. He aligned with the position of Senator Bola Tinubu, the National Leader of the APC, that funds in this regard should be paid directly to Nigerians that have BVN.

He called on the President to stop all the loopholes created to siphon the common patrimony of the nation. “Enough is enough” he said.

Eze reiterated that the pandemic is a call on the leadership to invest more in the Health sector and prepare the country ahead of similar health emergencies in future.

Eze appeals to all Nigerians to make this report go viral and ensure that it gets the attention of Mr. President so that this innocent woman will get justice not minding that this report is copied to the two Principal Media Aides of Mr. President, Mr. Femi Adesina and Mal. Shehu Garba, my good friend, Akasa Terver the CPS to Governor Samuel Orthom and few members of NCDC.

NNPC Reduces Ex- Depot Price Of PMS

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Wednesday announced a reduction in the ex-depot price of petrol from N113.28k per litre to N108.00K per litre across all its products loading facilities as well as in its through put operations.

A release on Wednesday in Abuja by the corporation’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Dr. Kennie Obateru, quoted the Managing Director of the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Musa Lawan, as saying that the new ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise called petrol, reflects the company’s market strategy to make more sales while complying with the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency’s (PPPRA) price template.

Lawan explained that the new price regime would enable PPMC to boost its sales volumes from the billions of litres of Petrol it has in storage while providing affordable price to millions of customers.

He said the new price was arrived at after extensive review of market realities by the PPMC internal price review unit.

The PPMC MD however pointed out that Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), otherwise called diesel, being already deregulated, its prices are determined by market forces.

On March 18, 2020, the NNPC reviewed its PMS ex-coastal, ex-depot and NNPC Retail pump prices.
Thus, effective 19 March 2020, NNPC ex-coastal price for PMS was reviewed downwards from N117.6/litre to N99.44/litre while ex-depot price was reduced from N133.28/litre to N113.28/litre.

Niger State COVID 19 Taskforce Intercepts 59 Persons Enroute To Kano, Lagos

0

Niger State Government committee Taskforce on Covid-19 has intercepted no fewer than 59 person en-route to Kano from Lagos and vice versa.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Makusidi disclosed this, in Minna.

Dr. Makusidi said that 40 of the intercepted persons were from Kano going to Lagos while 19 others were coming from Lagos and going to Kano.

“Despite the interstate lockdown, people are still moving under any small opportunity they got. I can’t imagine people travelling under the cover of trampol and sack of rice”, he said.

The Commissioner said that it was a sad and pathetic situation that, despite the lockdown of the country, people were able to beat checkpoints across the country.

He called on the Federal Government to implement the interstate lockdown to the latter, as the virus can be curtailed at local points since its lifespan was 14-days.

“For us, we are not going to leave any stone unturned, they are going back to where they came from”, he stated.

He added that the intercepted persons have been subjected to temperature test as the state does not have testing kits that will confirm the COVID-19 status of a suspected case.

The intercepted persons have since been convicted by the Mobile Court and charged between three months to one year imprisonment with an option of N3, 000 to N10, 000 fine respectively.

Dr. Makusidi revealed that two persons have been arrested in Beji, and would soon be charged to court for bringing people into the state and harbouring them for monetary gains, thereby endangering the lives of many other citizens.

He commended the action of a Good Samaritan, who upon the return of his son from Kano, reported his arrival to the authority and the returnee presented himself to be quarantined for 14-days and awaiting to be tested.

Niger State is the gateway between Northern Nigeria and Southwest; therefore the state government is appealing to the Federal Government to ensure strictness on the total lockdown of the country so that the pandemic comes to an end.

Kano: Before We Murder All The Medics

By Bala Ibrahim

The plight of the medics in Kano is increasingly becoming pathetic, particularly those in constant contact with the patients, and unless something positive or pragmatic is done, the situation may go poignant. It is a fact that all over the world, health care facilities are potentially hazardous workplaces that expose the medics to a variety of dangers, but signing a contract to save lives, does not mean signing a contract to sell life, particularly one’s life.

According to the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, 18 nurses have tested positive for coronavirus in Kano this week. This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Kano branch of the association, Mr Ibrahim Maikarfi Muhammad, who said, 86 samples of nurses were taken, out of which 18 tested positive for the virus.

On Monday, the Kano branch of the Nigeria Medical Association, disclosed that 34 medical doctors had also tested positive for COVID-19 in Kano. For a state with the highest population in Nigeria, and one that has been suffering the shortage of medics and general medical facilities, this is not only pitiful, but distressingly disturbing.

Nigeria is still lagging behind from the recommendations of the World Health Organization, WHO, on the required number of medical personnel to cater efficiently for its teeming population, and Kano is amongst the states with the bad record of this poor doctor to patient ratio. Therefore anything that would further deplete this delicate balance, would certainly spell disaster for the state.

The state is destined for doom, as the problem of the pandemic becomes more precarious, if the medics keep getting infected. With the closure of all private clinics in Kano, patients are compulsorily directed to the public hospitals, where the medics are not only overstretched and overwhelmed, but extremely apprehensive to approach patients, because of the absence of efficient personal protective equipments.

If we add the burden of high work load, verbal abuse from disgruntled patients, sour work relationships due to frustrations and limited resources, even if the medics don’t die prematurely due to infections, they are liable to suffer psychological stress, depression or the burnout syndrome. The cost or consequence of these misfortunes, on a state like Kano, that is facing the biggest health challenge ever, is akin to a woe, worse than a whammy.

The general expectation is that, because there is always the challenge or occupational health and safety risk, of the healthcare workers facing infections from exposure to blood and body fluids, or some air-borne diseases, as such, adequate arrangement would be made to safeguard them through the provision of all equipments. Unfortunately, in Kano, the situation is mostly the opposite.

With the coming of Covid19, and the regular warnings that the disease can be contracted through physical contact and airborne droplets, every reasonable mind would assume the government would go extra, in giving additional protection to those in the frontline.

Reports from the hospitals are saying, many medical doctors and nurses, are simply staying away from work for their own safety, a development that is lending credence to the speculated reason behind the surge in deaths in the state. Yes, if the medic is not safe, he can’t guarantee the patient’s safety.

The health system in Kano is facing multifaceted problems, with nepotism, particularly the internal interference from inside the Governor’s house being topmost. This is giving way to loss of morale and a lack of confidence on the system.

The zeal and keenness of hundreds of volunteers, who responded to the call of the state for medical assistance, was frustrated by the show of such favoritism from the Governor’s house, who preferred relatives or friends of madam or her daughter, to the services of competent and professional hands with experience.

This has not only put a spanner in the fight against the Covid-19 in the state, but is also working contrary to the ambition of the Primary health care system, which is suppose to be an integrated and people-centered approach to health and human wellbeing.

The foundation of every health system is the provision of health care to the people, and ensuring that they receive quality health care whenever they need it. And quality service can only come from qualified personnel. If nepotism is permitted to play, the result would be the reverse. At the end, the people would be turned into less prosperous patients.

While appreciating the Federal government, for lamenting over the continued infection of doctors and nurses managing the pandemic, and urging them to adhere to all the standard Infection, Prevention and Control, IPC, measures, it is important for the federal government to know that, the medics can only adhere to the rules of what is made available. It is therefore expected, that the federal government would go further, by taking punitive measures on states that seem insensitive to the safety of their hospital staff. This should be done, before they murder all the medics.

Like the leaders, the medics are human beings. If we continue to murder them through our own mediocracies, gread and selfishness, we are simply being inhuman. You can not be a human being, without being human.
