NEMA DG Calls For Stronger Synergy Among SEMAs At National Conference In Lagos

0

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has urged State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) to deepen collaboration and synergy for more effective disaster management at the grassroots and sub-national levels.

She made the call on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at the opening of the National SEMA Conference held at the Balmoral Event Centre, Ikeja, Lagos. The conference, hosted by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) in partnership with NEMA, brought together heads of SEMAs from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

Mrs Umar stressed the need to shift emergency management from a reactive to a proactive approach. “Emergency management can no longer be reactive—it must be predictive, preventive, and participatory. Our citizens should not encounter us only when disaster strikes; they should see us every day, building safer communities, raising awareness, and ensuring preparedness,” she said.

Describing the conference as “a call to action,” the NEMA DG highlighted the shared responsibility of stakeholders in protecting lives, safeguarding property, and building resilient communities. She also commended LASEMA for decentralising response units, deploying technology, and engaging communities, noting that Lagos has set an example of what is achievable with vision and commitment.

Umar pledged NEMA’s commitment to strengthening early warning systems, improving data and forecasting, expanding grassroots capacity-building, and ensuring transparency and accountability in all interventions.

The Judgement On Dismissed Cadet ASP Officers Is Not Final

By Kelvin Adegbenga

The recent judgment of the National Industrial Court, Abuja Division, ordering the immediate reinstatement of 196 officers from Cadet ASP Force Courses 18, 19, and 20 who had been dismissed by the Nigeria Police authorities, has generated much public interest.

While the decision may appear, on the surface, as a victory for the affected officers, it is important to stress that this ruling is not final.

The Nigeria Police Force, like every other institution, retains the constitutional right of appeal up to the Supreme Court. The National Industrial Court, though empowered to handle labour and employment disputes, is not a court of last resort.

Its judgments are subject to review by higher courts, and until the appellate process is exhausted, the matter remains unsettled in law.

Beyond the procedural issue, the substantive matter also deserves close attention. Age falsification is a serious criminal and disciplinary offence under Nigerian law. It not only undermines the integrity of public service but also erodes the trust that society places in its law enforcement officers.

The allegations against the dismissed officers, that they manipulated both their ages and service records, are not trivial.

It is crucial to clarify that in the Nigeria Police Force, service years begin from the date of initial enlistment into the force, not from when an officer commences cadet training at the Police Academy.

Attempting to reset or conceal years of service by manipulating personal records amounts to fraud, and such acts compromise the standards of discipline and accountability that are fundamental to policing.

The available evidence reportedly points to clear cases of manipulation by some of the affected officers. This not only violates police service regulations but also stands in breach of ethical and legal expectations of officers entrusted with enforcing the law.

In light of these realities, the reinstatement order, while binding for now, should not be misconstrued as a final exoneration. The Nigeria Police authorities still have the legitimate window to challenge the judgment at the appellate level.

Until the higher courts pronounce a definitive ruling, the case remains very much alive.

At its core, this matter is not merely about the careers of 196 individuals; it is about the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force and the rule of law.

If officers who manipulate their ages and service years are allowed to escape accountability, it will set a dangerous precedent and weaken the very foundation of discipline in the service.

POCACOV Flags Off National Cybercrime Awareness Campaign

The Nigeria Police Force, through its community-oriented and preventive policing initiative, the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), has launched a month-long Cybercrime Awareness Campaign to mark Cybercrime Awareness Month this October.

The campaign, which runs from October 1 to 31, 2025, seeks to educate Nigerians—particularly young people, on the dangers of cybercrime, its legal consequences, and safe online practices. Throughout the month, POCACOV will disseminate digital awareness posts, safety tips, educational materials, and advocacy messages across its official social media platforms.

Speaking at the launch, the National Coordinator of POCACOV, ACP Olabisi Okuwobi, psc, mnipr, mipra (UK), described cybercrime as a growing threat to national security, economic stability, and the future of Nigerian youths. She emphasised the need for preventive sensitisation, youth engagement, and value reorientation to curb the menace.

“The fight against cybercrime is not only about enforcement but also about awareness, prevention, and empowerment. Through this campaign, we aim to equip Nigerians with the knowledge to make safe choices online, resist criminal tendencies, and embrace digital responsibility,” ACP Okuwobi said.

The initiative is in line with the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to preventive policing and POCACOV’s broader mission of working with stakeholders, schools, parents, community leaders, and youth organisations to reduce vices such as cultism, drug abuse, sexual and gender-based violence, human trafficking, and cybercrime.

POCACOV urged Nigerians to actively engage with the campaign on its social media platforms and help spread the message of cyber safety and responsibility.

Bayelsa Electricity: Power From IPP Won’t Be Free – Gov Diri

0

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said that the power generated and distributed from the state’s independent power plant will not be free and that Bayelsans will pay for the service.

According to a press release on Thursday, October 2, 2025, signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Bayelsa State, Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri clarified on Wednesday when he visited the project site to inspect six out of the eight new 60mw gas turbines procured by the state government at Elebele in Ogbia Local Government Area.

The power equipment and its accessories arrived in the state about a week ago.

Accompanied by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, chairman of the state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Solomon Agwana, the Commissioner for Power, Kharin Komuko, and other government officials, the Bayelsa governor told journalists that people of the state were upbeat about the prospect of 24-hour power supply by the end of this year.

He explained that consumption would be metered and paid for as the government had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Jampur Group for establishing a customised metering production plant in the state.

He said, “I had given the end of this year as a deadline for this project, and we are sticking to that. Hopefully, before Christmas, we will have these turbines fired up and by God’s grace, Bayelsa will begin to have 24 hours of uninterrupted power supply.

“We are actually expecting eight gas turbines, but six have arrived, and I have been assured that the remaining two, with some accessories, will be here next week. These are the most modern gas turbines.

“Initially, we planned to have two very large plants, but later, the experts advised that there could be a blackout if one of them breaks down. So I had to approve the eight.

“As you know, to maintain this equipment and the gas to fire it, even though it is on our soil, we will spend money to procure it from the company. So it is not free. For there to be constant electricity, everybody must pay for it. It is pay as you consume.”

The Commissioner for Power, Mr. Kharin Komuko, who also spoke, described the project asa dream come true for the ASSURED Prosperity administration.

He said when the governor first spoke about it, there was open cynicism by critics of the government and thanked him for making good his promise.

Also, Managing Director of the Bayelsa State Electricity Company, Engr. Olice Kemenanabo, who explained the role of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) in the state’s IPP project, said the Electricity Act had grey areas that were interwoven to ensure that all legacy distribution companies were carried along.

Kemenanabo said the state and PHEDC were working together to avoid any legal tussle between the franchise owners and the distribution network.

He further stated that the PHEDC existing network, which has over four hundred transformers in the state, would be utilised for power distribution.

Speaking on behalf of the Jampur Group, technical partners to the state electricity company, the Project Manager, Mr. Sharif Abu, described the gas turbine project as very crucial and sensitive, noting that the precise time schedule for completion would be met.

The governor also inspected sites of the ongoing construction of the 25,000-capacity stadium at Igbogene and the nine-storey civil servants secretariat project at Ovom, both in Yenagoa Local Government Area.

Others who accompanied the governor were the member representing Yenagoa Constituency 1 in the House of Assembly, Chief Ayibanengiyefa Egba, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, among others.

Isaiah Ijele’s October 1 Video Exposes IGP Usman Alkali Baba’s Hidden Campaign Against IGP Egbetokun

By Danjuma Lamido

The October 1, 2025, video released by Isaiah Davis Ijele has shed fresh light on the dark undercurrents within the Nigerian Police Force.

More importantly, it has unmasked former Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba as one of the forces behind the sustained campaign of calumny against the current Inspector General, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.

The revelations are damning. Information at our disposal indicates that IGP Usman Alkali Baba has, since leaving office, continued to manipulate the internal and external structures of the police through his stranglehold on contracts and procurement channels.

Using his connections in the National Assembly, Alkali is said to have hijacked the bulk of police contracts, deliberately shutting out IGP Egbetokun from exercising legitimate control over major resources of the institution he currently heads.

This is not only a brazen affront to the office of the IGP but also a deliberate attempt to weaken Egbetokun’s administration.

Worse still, reports reveal that a significant portion of police funds was diverted to Alkali’s private interests, particularly his car sales outlets on Gimbya Street, Area 11, Abuja, and in Kaduna State.

His children, during his tenure as IGP, allegedly took over the procurement department, turning it into their personal empire, diverting contracts and jobs meant for Nigerians to themselves and their cronies.

The culture of corruption that thrived under Alkali’s watch continues to haunt the police, even as he attempts to maintain a grip on the system from outside.

It is also worth noting that Alkali Baba enjoyed a close relationship with Omoyele Sowore. Reports indicate that Sowore was financially linked to Baba during his tenure as IGP, a development that sheds light on the curious alignment of Sowore’s public statements and the smear campaigns directed against IGP Egbetokun.

Their partnership was not built on reform but on shared interests in undermining structures that did not align with their agenda.

In sharp contrast, the achievements of IGP Kayode Egbetokun since assuming office are glaring, progressive, and undeniable.

He has ushered in the most far-reaching promotion exercise in the history of the Nigeria Police Force, uplifting over 100,000 personnel. He has digitalised operations within the force, upgraded the medical and legal units to full Directorates, and cleared a staggering ₦24 billion backlog of insurance and welfare claims for families of fallen officers, restoring dignity and hope to countless police households.

IGP Egbetokun’s focus on officer welfare, professionalism, and systemic reform speaks volumes about his vision for the future of policing in Nigeria. His administration has chosen service delivery over personal enrichment, institutional growth over nepotism, and digital transformation over outdated analog practices.

The contrast between Baba’s legacy and Egbetokun’s leadership could not be starker. While Baba clings to power through manipulation and the diversion of public resources, Egbetokun is building a police force that Nigerians can trust and respect.

Isaiah Ijele’s video is not just a revelation; it is a reminder to Nigerians that the battle for the soul of our police force is ongoing.

We must not allow vested interests and disgraced former leaders to derail the reforms and progress currently underway.

The time has come to support IGP Egbetokun in his quest to redefine the Nigeria Police Force, free it from corrupt influences, and secure its place as a true guardian of justice and order in our nation.

Power Supply, Major Milestone For Bayelsa At 29 – Gov Diri

0

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said the procurement of a 60-megawatt gas turbine by his administration was a milestone worth celebrating by the state as it turned 29 on October 1, 2025.

According to a press release on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Bayelsa State, Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri also stated that when fully installed, it would not only guarantee 24-hour power supply in the state but would also create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

The Bayelsa governor stated this in a statewide broadcast on the twin occasion of Nigeria’s 65th Independence and Bayelsa’s 29th statehood anniversary on October 1, 2025.

While congratulating Nigeria’s leader, President Bola Tinubu, as well as the people of the country and Bayelsa on the anniversary celebrations, Governor Diri expressed the hope of better days ahead.

According to him, his Assured Prosperity administration continues to progress with landmark projects, including the nine‑storey state secretariat complex that would provide efficient administrative space for public servants.

Senator Diri equally stated that the ongoing construction of the 25,000‑capacity stadium would foster youth development as the facility would inspire young people and showcase Bayelsa on a larger scale.

He said: “The recent arrival of the 60‑megawatt gas turbines mark a major milestone and brings us much closer to reliable, round‑the‑clock power in our state. That development will reduce household expenses, attract investment, create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

“Work is also progressing well on other landmark projects. The nine‑storey State Secretariat complex is advancing steadily and will provide modern, efficient administrative space for our public servants and the people they serve. To foster sports and youth development, we are building a 25,000‑capacity, Olympic‑standard stadium — a facility that will inspire our young people and showcase Bayelsa on the national and international stage.

He also spoke about developments in the education sector where the state had recorded significant progress in academic performanceand infrastructure upgrade.

“Our schools are improving. Recent NECO results have shown strong performances by our students, with Bayelsa among the top five states in Nigeria. To deepen pragmatic education, we have established science, technical and vocational colleges in every local government area.

“The ones at Ayamasa, Ofoni, Swali, Sampou and Opume have been completed and functional while others are nearing completion in Brass, Igbeta‑Ewoma and Oporoma.”

While admonishing the people to reflect on the state’s and nation’s history and hope for a better future, the Bayelsa chief executive urged them to renew their collective commitment to unity and hard work.

“The road has not always been smooth. Some ask why we continue to commemorate this day. The answer is simple: self‑determination matters.

“As Bayelsans, we have spent almost three decades making our own decisions, setting our own course and running our own race. That capacity is a cause for celebration and a responsibility we must discharge with wisdom and humility.”

The Bayelsa governor maintained that the narrative about the homogeneous Ijaw state was on the upswing and that there was much to be grateful and hopeful for.
