Building The Memory Of Justice: Commending IGP Egbetokun On The Criminal Database Systems

0

By Adewole Kehinde

“Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work gains success. Greatness will come.” Dwayne Johnson

On Thursday, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, declared open a groundbreaking training programme for operatives manning the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Database Systems across zonal, divisional, and state levels of the country.

This initiative is a turning point in the history of Nigerian policing, and it deserves our collective commendation.

For too long, Nigerian policing has been constrained by weak records, scattered files, and fragmented intelligence. Investigations often relied on memory, anecdotal evidence, or poorly kept archives.

With operatives now empowered to man the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Database Systems, a new dawn has arrived, one where every detail matters, and no criminal can simply vanish into bureaucratic shadows.

IGP Egbetokun was emphatic when he declared that this initiative signals a decisive shift from outdated, reactive policing models to a modern, intelligence-driven system rooted in data, memory, and predictive analysis.

In his words: “Without data, there is no memory. Without memory, there is no justice. But with data, there is no hiding place for criminals.” These words capture the heartbeat of the reform, the acknowledgement that justice itself begins with accurate records.

There is no doubt that the Criminal Database System is the core of intelligence-led policing. It is designed to track repeat offenders across jurisdictions, detect crime patterns, share intelligence seamlessly, and support prosecutions with credible evidence.

With this infrastructure in place, Nigerian policing is no longer stumbling in the dark; it is now guided by a system that sees, remembers, and predicts.

The professionalism, discipline, and integrity that IGP Egbetokun has consistently embodied are now being extended to operatives manning these systems. They are stepping into roles of critical national importance.

Their work will determine how justice is served, how trust is built, and how the Nigeria Police Force repositions itself as a credible, modern institution.

We must applaud the IGP for building a system where every arrest is recorded, every case is documented, and every officer is accountable. No case will vanish into forgotten files. This is not just reform; it is a cultural shift in law enforcement.

When citizens know that their complaints are properly recorded, when they see consistency and follow-through in investigations, their confidence in the Police grows. Trust begins with record-keeping, and that is precisely where IGP Egbetokun is laying the foundation.

Equally important, this initiative is positioning Nigeria within the global policing community. Through integration with INTERPOL, the African Union Border Programme, and UNODC frameworks in West Africa, the Nigeria Police Force is ensuring that offenders in Nigeria will no longer find sanctuary abroad. Crime has gone global, and so must policing.

There is no doubt that under the leadership of IGP Egbetokun and his management team, the Nigeria Police Force can build a service that is modern, trusted by Nigerians, and respected across the world.

The Criminal Database System is not just a tool; it is the memory of justice, the foundation of trust, and the future of Nigerian policing.

South West Youth Alliance Dismisses Report Against IGP Egbetokun As False And Malicious

0

The South West Youth Alliance has strongly condemned a recent publication by Supreme News alleging that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, is facing troubles over the compulsory retirement of senior police officers.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Adenike Ajanlekoko, on Thursday, the group described the report titled “IGP Egbetokun In Trouble Over Hasty Compulsory Retirement Of Officers” as false, mischievous, and an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the police chief.

According to the Alliance, contrary to the report, the compulsory retirement of over 200 police officers earlier in February was not ordered by IGP Egbetokun but by the Police Service Commission (PSC), which acted within its constitutional mandate.

The group further debunked claims that the IGP is applying “tactical delays” or avoiding court appearances, stressing that the matter is before the Federal High Court in Abuja and is proceeding in accordance with judicial processes.

“As a law-abiding public officer, the Inspector-General has never acted in defiance of the courts. The allegations are baseless and should be disregarded by the public,” the statement read.

The Alliance described IGP Egbetokun as a reform-driven leader working to reposition the Nigeria Police Force for efficiency, professionalism, and improved service delivery, noting that attempts to paint him as controversial were deliberate acts of blackmail and sensationalism.

It urged Nigerians to ignore the publication by Supreme News, which it accused of peddling fake news against the police and its leadership.

“The South West Youth Alliance stands firmly with the Inspector-General of Police as he continues to provide purposeful leadership and implement reforms vital for national security and peace,” the statement concluded.

IGP Egbetokun Declares Open Training On NPF Criminal Database Systems

0

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, has officially declared open the training programme for Nigeria Police Force (NPF) operatives responsible for managing the Force’s criminal database systems across zonal, state, and divisional commands.

Speaking at the event in September 2025, the IGP described the initiative as a landmark step in Nigeria’s policing history, marking the transition from reactive policing to data-driven, intelligence-led strategies.

He stressed that the criminal database systems are not just electronic records but “the memory of our justice system and the heartbeat of intelligence-led policing,” noting that they will enhance the tracking of repeat offenders, detection of crime patterns, intelligence sharing, and integration with global platforms such as INTERPOL.

Egbetokun charged the operatives undergoing training to embrace their roles with professionalism, discipline, and integrity, emphasising that accuracy in data entry could determine whether suspects face justice or escape accountability.

“This initiative is part of our broader Police Reform Agenda,” the IGP said, adding that the era of weak records, scattered files, and fragmented intelligence in the Force was over. He maintained that the reform would not only improve police accountability but also strengthen public confidence in law enforcement.

Highlighting the global relevance of the initiative, the Police Chief explained that integration with international policing frameworks would ensure that criminals could no longer find refuge outside Nigeria. “When a trafficker is convicted in Nigeria, the world must know. When a weapon is seized at our borders, its trail must echo across continents,” he declared.

The IGP also paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, pledging that their sacrifices would no longer be forgotten in “dusty files and unkept records,” but preserved in the Force’s digital memory.

He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his vision of a safe and digital Nigeria, as well as to the Police Service Commission, the Ministry of Interior, and international partners for their support.

Declaring the training open, Egbetokun urged participants to approach the programme with focus and commitment. “Every keystroke you make is a strike against crime. Every record you preserve is a shield for justice. Every report you file is a testimony of accountability,” he charged.

The training, according to the IGP, is expected to transform policing in Nigeria, making the Force more modern, trusted by citizens, and respected globally.

Free Speech Is Not A License For Defamation, Blackmail, Or Fake News

0

By Kelvin Adegbenga

Free speech is a cornerstone of democracy and is rightly guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution. It provides every citizen the right to express their opinions, criticise government policies, and hold public officials accountable.

However, this right is not absolute. It comes with responsibilities, boundaries, and legal limitations.

Unfortunately, many young Nigerians, including some Gen Z lawyers who should know better, have begun to interpret free speech as a licence to insult, blackmail, spread falsehoods, and defame others.

This is not only tragic but also a dangerous path that undermines the dignity of the legal profession.

It is deeply worrying to see supposed custodians of the law endorsing behaviours that the law itself clearly prohibits.

For instance, a presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) cannot take to social media to call the President of Nigeria a “criminal” without a valid court judgment declaring him as such.

No Nigerian court has ever declared the President a criminal, and until such a pronouncement is made, such statements are not free speech—they are defamation.

Similarly, no court of law has ruled that the Inspector-General of Police is “illegal.” Yet, we see Omoyele Sowore and his supporters freely referring to the nation’s top law enforcement officer as an “illegal IGP.”

This is not political commentary; it is outright falsehood. Even more disturbing is the reckless claim that a respected, married woman is the mistress of the IGP.

That is defamation of the highest order, an attack not just on the IGP’s integrity but also on the dignity of the woman involved and her family.

It does not stop there. To tell a sitting Governor of a state that he is “senseless” is not protected by free speech either. It is an insult, an abuse, and a violation of the law.

Nigeria is not a lawless society. We are a nation governed by laws, and those laws place clear limits on what speech is permissible and what crosses into defamation, incitement, or blackmail.

When lawyers, who should be the guardians of justice, begin to defend these shameful acts as “free speech,” it raises serious questions about the future of our profession.

The legal profession thrives on dignity, respect for the rule of law, and the pursuit of justice. To see young lawyers twist constitutional provisions to justify character assassination is both shameful and alarming.

Free speech is about speaking truth to power, criticising policies, and debating national issues in good faith. It is not about blackmailing individuals, spreading false news, or tarnishing the reputations of leaders and private citizens.

I therefore call on lawyers in Nigeria, especially the younger generation, to uphold the sanctity of the law. Our role is not to support or excuse defamation, blackmail, and fake news under the guise of free speech.

Instead, we must be the voices of reason, the defenders of justice, and the protectors of truth. The dignity of our noble profession, and indeed, the stability of our democracy, depends on it.

A major highlight was the series of tributes delivered by the six former IGPs, who spoke of Arase’s enduring commitment to policing, justice, and human rights. His eldest daughter offered a deeply personal remembrance, while his son delivered the Vote of Thanks, bringing the ceremony to a close.

IGP Egbetokun’s Exemplary Commitment To Police Welfare

By Adewole Kehinde

“Leadership is not about being in charge. Leadership is about taking care of those in your charge”.Simon Sinek

The recent disbursement of N2.2 billion to 1,574 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased officers under the 11th phase of the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes marks yet another milestone in the administration of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

This singular act cleared a backlog of 10 years of arrears, spanning from 2015 to 2025, and brought much-needed relief to families who had waited far too long for justice and support.

Since assuming office as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police, IGP Egbetokun has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the welfare of officers and their families.

By disbursing a cumulative N24.2 billion to 9,735 families of fallen heroes, he has sent a strong and compassionate message: the sacrifices of those who paid the supreme price in service to the nation will never be forgotten.

What makes this gesture remarkable is not just the financial assistance extended, but the humanity and trust it represents. It is more than a statutory duty; it is a sacred trust, a solemn vow to ensure that the memory of our departed officers remains alive and their families are not left behind. It is a reassurance that service to the nation under the banner of the Nigeria Police Force is not in vain.

The welfare of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, whether serving, retired, or departed, has clearly become a cardinal priority under IGP Egbetokun’s administration. His leadership reflects empathy, responsibility, and a vision for a police institution that truly values its people.

Special commendation must also go to the Force Insurance Unit, under the capable leadership of ACP Lydia Ameh, whose diligence and professionalism made this exercise a reality.

Her tireless commitment underscores the importance of dedicated officers working behind the scenes to make life better for the larger police family.

Equally deserving of appreciation is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose steadfast support for police welfare has created the enabling environment for these remarkable interventions.

His leadership continues to strengthen the morale of the police force and restore confidence in the government’s resolve to care for those who serve.

As IGP Egbetokun continues to champion the welfare of officers, both living and departed, I can only pray that God continues to bless the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police himself for making the well-being of police families a priority.

0

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) has paid glowing tribute to the former Inspector General of Police and immediate past Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase, CFR, describing him as a reformer, mentor, and patriot who left an indelible mark on policing in Nigeria.

The tribute, delivered on behalf of the Chairman by Aminu Malumfashi, Director of Human Resource Management, was read during the Night of Tributes held in honour of the late Arase.

The PSC Chairman said Dr. Arase dedicated his life to the service of the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, combining courage, intellect, and humility in his leadership. He noted that as Inspector General of Police and later as Chairman of the PSC, Dr. Arase championed professionalism, discipline, and integrity within the Force.

“His tenure at the Commission may have been short, but it was deeply impactful. He relocated the Commission’s headquarters to its permanent home in Jabi, Abuja, stabilized its operations, strengthened its oversight role, and built bridges of trust between the Police and the public,” the tribute read.

He added that Dr. Arase’s leadership was marked by vision, inclusiveness, and dialogue, while his colleagues saw him as more than a Chairman—“he was a mentor, a brother, and a guide.”

The PSC Chairman emphasized that Dr. Arase’s greatness lay not in the length of his days but in the depth of his impact, describing him as a shining light in the history of policing in Nigeria.

On behalf of the Board, Management, and Staff of the PSC, condolences were extended to his wife, children, and family, with prayers for strength to bear the loss.
