Of Sowore And Political Banditry

0

By Danjuma Lamido

In every society, democracy thrives on the principle of truth, accountability, and respect for the rule of law. Where these are eroded, opportunists emerge to manipulate the public, distort facts, and weaponize information for selfish political gains.

In recent times, one figure who has consistently embodied this brand of political recklessness in Nigeria is Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore, once perceived as an activist, has gradually descended into what can only be described as political banditry — a relentless pursuit of attention at the expense of facts, institutions, and the credibility of the very democracy he claims to defend.

His stock-in-trade has become the deliberate twisting of narratives, the forgery of documents, and the propagation of falsehoods under the guise of “citizen journalism.”

Political banditry, in its essence, is not limited to the forceful seizure of ballots or the use of thugs during elections. It is equally the hijacking of public trust, the weaponization of misinformation, and the sabotage of public institutions through calculated disinformation.

By this definition, Sowore has, time and again, proven himself to be an agent of democratic sabotage.

From concocted police signals to baseless allegations against security agencies and public officers, Sowore has perfected the art of manufacturing outrage.

What is most unfortunate is how easily sections of the public fall prey to these fabrications, amplifying falsehoods and further eroding confidence in institutions already battling perception crises.

But Nigerians must ask themselves: to what end? What is the motive behind this constant barrage of lies and reckless activism that is neither constructive nor reformative?

The answer is simple, political relevance through blackmail. By dragging institutions into mud fights, by manufacturing crises where none exist, Sowore positions himself as the eternal opposition, the professional agitator who thrives only when the nation is in chaos.

True activism is rooted in integrity and the courage to confront injustice with verifiable facts. Political banditry, on the other hand, thrives on falsehood, manipulation, and the exploitation of public sentiment. Sowore’s brand of politics clearly falls into the latter.

The Nigerian people must learn to differentiate between genuine voices for reform and charlatans who wear the cloak of activism while practicing deception.

Democracy cannot grow on the fertile soil of lies, neither can a nation move forward when its public discourse is dominated by misinformation peddlers.

It is time to call things by their real names. Sowore’s antics are not activism; they are a dangerous form of political banditry, one that undermines democracy, destabilizes governance, and distracts the nation from the genuine task of reform and development.

History will not remember those who made the loudest noise, but those who offered the most honest contributions to nation-building.

And on that score, Sowore has already written himself into the wrong side of history.

Ndigbo Young Professionals Counters Francis Nwapa’s Claims On President Tinubu, DSS, And Police

0

The Ndigbo Young Professionals has dismissed allegations by self-acclaimed human rights activist, Francis Nwapa, who accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of weaponising insecurity in Nigeria and persecuting pro-democracy activists.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Amb. Chinonso Chukwuemeka, the group described Nwapa’s comments as “false, mischievous, and deliberately aimed at misleading Nigerians and inciting disaffection against constituted authorities.”

The statement further clarified that Omoyele Sowore, leader of the African Action Congress (AAC), should not be mistaken for a pro-democracy activist.

According to the group, Sowore has consistently used his platform, Sahara Reporters, as well as his social media accounts, to spread falsehoods, make reckless allegations, and peddle defamatory claims against individuals and government institutions.

Francis Nwapa

On Nwapa’s accusation of double standards by security agencies, the Ndigbo Young Professionals stressed that neither the Department of State Services (DSS) nor the Nigeria Police Force has acted outside the law.

“It is a blatant lie to suggest that the Police are ignoring those terrorising Nigerians while targeting Sowore. What is at play is simply the enforcement of the law against false information,” the group stated.

The group also faulted Nwapa’s attacks on the DSS and Police, insisting he lacked the moral standing to question their competence. “His utterances only expose him as a mouthpiece acting out the script of his paymaster, Omoyele Sowore,” the statement read.

The Ndigbo Young Professionals cautioned that Nwapa had no authority to brand political leaders as “criminals” or accuse them of plotting to destroy the country. It described such remarks as reckless, destabilising, and unacceptable.

In conclusion, the group advised Sowore to concentrate on addressing his pending court cases rather than “sponsoring faceless groups and individuals like Francis Nwapa to defend indefensible publications.”

The Delta State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its fight against crime with the arrest of two suspected members of a notorious armed robbery syndicate that specialised in attacking churches and carting away instruments and valuables.

The suspects, identified as Emmanuel Emiowor (21) and Noah Philip (20), both of PTI Road, Warri, were intercepted on September 16, 2025, by operatives of the Ogwashi-Uku Division, led by Divisional Police Officer CSP Israel Okomoyon, following a distress call about an imminent attack on Dominican City Church, along Polytechnic Road near Sticals Hotel.

Saudi Authorities Free 3 Nigerian Pilgrims Arrested For Alleged Drug Trafficking

….. Marwa commends Saudi counterpart, attributes success of NDLEA interventions to President Tinubu’s commitment, HAGF, Foreign Affairs, Aviation Ministers, NSA’s support

Saudi Arabia authorities have released three Nigerian pilgrims who were detained in Jeddah, since last month following their arrest over alleged drug trafficking. The three Nigerians who were freed from detention after four weeks in custody include: Mrs. Maryam Hussain Abdullahi; Mrs. Abdullahi Bahijja Aminu; and Mr. Abdulhamid Saddieq.

Their freedom came following weeks of relentless engagements by the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) with the leadership of the General Directorate of Narcotics Control (GDNC) in Saudi Arabia with the full support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the assistance of the Hon Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs Amb. Yusuf Tuggar and the Hon. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, as well as the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

According to a press release on Wednesday 17th September 2025, signed by the NDLEA Director, Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, a syndicate operating at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) Kano had tagged bags containing illicit drugs with the names of the three unsuspecting Nigerians who travelled on an Ethiopian Airline flight ET940 which departed Kano on 6th August 2025 to Jeddah on lesser hajj. They were later arrested in Saudi for alleged drug trafficking.

Following complaints to the NDLEA boss by families of the three victims over the detention of their family members in Saudi Arabia after the completion of their lesser hajj on an allegation of trafficking in illicit substances, an investigation was launched to unravel what happened.

The probe led to the arrest of 55-year-old drug kingpin Mohammed Ali Abubakar alias Bello Karama and three other members of the syndicate including the airline officials behind the shipment of the illicit substances for which the three innocent pilgrims were arrested and detained in Jeddah. Charges had since been filed against Mohammed Ali Abubakar and other members of the syndicate: Celestina Emmanuel Yayock; Abdulbasit Adamu Sagagi and Jazuli Kabir.

Armed with the outcome of NDLEA investigation and charges filed against members of the syndicate as well as other evidences to prove the innocence of the three Nigerian pilgrims, Marwa engaged with his Saudi counterpart at multiple levels and different locations including Saudi Arabia in compliance with President Tinubu’s agenda that no Nigerian suffers unjustly in a foreign land.

Following the series of engagements one of the three Nigerians was released from custody on Sunday 14th September and the remaining two on Monday 15th September 2025.

Expressing happiness over the development, Marwa commended his counterpart at the Saudi GDNC for upholding the essence of the Memorandum of Understanding between NDLEA and GDNC on collaboration and partnership.

“The biggest support of our effort on this case came from President Tinubu who is committed to ensuring that every Nigerian gets their deserved respect and fair treatment wherever they are across the world. And that is what has come to play in this case, that no Nigerian is unjustly punished for crimes they know nothing about anywhere in the world.

We equally appreciate the assistance provided by the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs Amb. Yusuf Tuggar and the Hon. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, as well as the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who were with us all the way on the matter.”

CCLCA Declares Rivers Local Government Elections Free, Fair, And Credible

0

The Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness (CCLCA), a coalition of 30 civil society and non-governmental organizations accredited to observe the August 30, 2025 Rivers State Local Government Elections, has released its official report, declaring the polls transparent, free, and fair.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Dr. Nwambu Gabriel Chibuzor who spoke on behalf of the coalition highlighted the extraordinary circumstances under which the elections were conducted, following the Supreme Court’s nullification of the previous poll and the subsequent declaration of a state of emergency in the state. The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), under the leadership of Chairman Dr. Michael Odey, was mandated to conduct fresh elections within 30 days, covering 6,866 polling units, 319 wards, and 23 local government areas.

Despite the tight timeframe, CCLCA commended RSIEC for what it described as a “Herculean but exemplary” effort, noting that the commission demonstrated professionalism and efficiency unprecedented in Nigeria’s electoral history.

Key Observations

* Campaigns by the major parties – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) – were strictly issue-based, with no cases of pre-election violence or intimidation recorded.
* Election materials were distributed efficiently across all local government areas, including difficult riverine terrains.

* Voting commenced early in most polling units, with accreditation and voting processes described as orderly.
* Contrary to initial fears of voter apathy, turnout improved significantly as the day progressed.
* Observers reported a complete absence of electoral malpractices such as ballot box snatching, thuggery, or vote buying – a rare occurrence in recent Nigerian elections.
* All ad-hoc staff were fully paid within one week of the election, a departure from past practices that often led to protests.
* Security agencies were praised for their professionalism and non-intrusive conduct throughout the process.

Election Outcome

The election produced a surprising result, with the opposition APC winning 20 chairmanship seats while the ruling PDP secured just three. According to the coalition, the outcome reflected the transparency of the process and showed that incumbency did not influence the results.

Recommendations

The CCLCA urged that the Rivers experience be adopted as a national model for credible electoral management in Nigeria, stressing that RSIEC’s approach should serve as a benchmark for future elections.

“The August 30 Rivers State Local Government Elections were free, fair, credible, and consistent with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” said Dr. Nwambu Gabriel Chibuzor, who signed the report on behalf of the coalition.

Sowore Must Prove His Allegations Against President Tinubu

0

By Amb. Chinonso Chukwuemeka

The recent outburst by Mr. Omoyele Sowore, who referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal,” is not only reckless but deeply unfortunate.

As a citizen, Sowore has the right to free expression, but freedom of speech does not extend to making unsubstantiated criminal allegations against the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He who alleges must prove. If Sowore has credible evidence that President Tinubu is indeed a criminal, he should make it public and follow the legal process to substantiate his claims. Anything short of this is mere slander aimed at undermining the institution of the presidency and destabilizing the nation.

Contrary to Sowore’s narrative, the Department of State Services (DSS) is not censoring him or Nigerians on social media. Rather, the DSS is fulfilling its constitutional duty to safeguard Nigeria’s national security, unity, and democratic stability.

When an individual recklessly deploys social media to malign the Commander-in-Chief without proof, it is within the mandate of the DSS to act.

Sowore and his lawyer have no authority to restrain the DSS from pursuing lawful action regarding his social media accounts.

As long as his posts pose threats to national security and the economy, the DSS reserves the power to direct platforms like Meta and X to delete such posts or even deactivate the accounts involved. That is not censorship, it is the enforcement of the rule of law.

It is disturbing, therefore, that a serial presidential candidate like Sowore would trivialize national security by describing the DSS as “clueless, idle, and disheveled.”

Worse still is his blanket claim that there is no one “sensible left in offices to make Nigeria work.” Such comments are not only baseless but also insult the patriotic men and women risking their lives daily to protect this country.

If the DSS fails to pursue this case to its logical conclusion, Sowore would have succeeded in setting a dangerous precedent where anyone can, without evidence, brand fellow citizens, or even the President, a criminal.

That would open the floodgates to anarchy, weaken our institutions, and further erode the civility required in democratic discourse.

Nigeria must never allow reckless activism to override the principle of accountability.

Sowore must either provide evidence to back his allegation or retract his statement.

Otherwise, the DSS is right to pursue every lawful means to ensure that the rule of law prevails.

PSC Chair X-Rays The Future Of Policing And Security In Nigeria

0

….. insists a police officer must understand the law, police orders and instructions and development attributes of efficiency, courtesy, tact, integrity and impartiality

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu rtd, has said that a Police Officer in all circumstance must have a thorough understanding and knowledge of the law, and of Police orders and instructions and must develop the attributes of efficiency, courtesy, tact, integrity and impartiality.

DIG Argungu in a key note address presented to the participants of an ongoing high-level workshop which began in Abuja yesterday, September 15th 2025 and organised for security personnel by the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, Development Partners and Governments of Bornu, Adamawa and Yobe States also noted that current threats to the future of Policing and security in Nigeria are no longer primarily coming from the conventional (traditional) factors of the usual narrative – unemployment, poverty, out-of-school children, etc.

According to a press release on Tuesday, September 16th 2025, signed by the  PSC Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, ee spoke on “Ethics, Mental Health and the Future of Policing and security in Nigeria” with theme “Command Leadership for Ethical and Trauma-Informed Security Response” where he noted that it is important for Police Officers to study ethics and professional code of ethics since according to him they are the bedrock of Policing code of conduct.

DIG Argungu said ethics training will help Police departments/institutions recognise their full potential since Officers use a lot of discretion in the conduct of their duties which include the enforcement of the law at appropriate time or place.

The PSC Chairman also spoke on the implications of medical health requirements for enlistment into the Nigeria Police Force adding that medical health examination will help evaluate “if the candidate is medically fit to meet the physical requirements of the job”.

He said deformities and abnormalities test must be carried out as part of the medical health requirements, adding that a candidate for admission must be free of impediment in speech, gross malfunction of teeth or jaw preventing proper mastication of food, knock knees, bent knees, bant knees, flat feet, bent arms. Others include; deformed hands, defective eye sight or squint eyes, amputation of any kind etc.

DIG Argungu explained that Police stress stems from operational factors like trauma exposure and dangerous incidents, organizational issues such as poor management, shift work and lack of peer support and external societal pressures “which can lead to issues like burn out, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD)”.He noted the categories of stressors which he said includes operational stressors which is inherent in the nature of police work including exposure to violence, traumatic events and the potential to danger; Organisational stressors that comes with issues of insufficient staffing, poor leadership, excessive overtime, lack of proper equipment and strict or poorly enforced policies.

Others include Personal/External stressors such as factors like financial difficulties, social and family pressures, societal influences as well as internal factors related to individual Officers’ emotional well being.

DIG Argungu said the consequences of Police stress is that it can lead to various mental and physical health problems including; mental health disorder, burn out, substance misuse and suicide.

On the future of Policing and security in Nigeria, the PSC Chairman said the key challenges and threats that the country is facing now are “social media as well as digital channel which can also be used for malicious content and propaganda and “hooligans, employed by undesirable elements to recruit and mobilise followers “

The PSC Chairman noted that at this era of 21st Century, “all security Officers will have to have training in the recognition of offences committed by computer and how electronically based technology affects businesses and everyday life.

NIMC Achieves 126 Million Enrolments, Earns Praise From President Tinubu

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for its progress in identity management, as enrolment in the National Identity Database surpasses 126 million.

Speaking at the National Day of Identity celebration in Abuja on Tuesday, the President—represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, described the milestone as a major step towards building a secure and inclusive digital identity system for Nigeria.

He highlighted NIMC’s recent achievements, including clearing a backlog of 2.5 million enrolments, expanding services across the country and in the diaspora, and integrating the National Identification Number (NIN) into key sectors such as health, education, agriculture, social welfare, and security.

NIMC Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, disclosed that 123 million Nigerians are already captured in the database, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16.9, which seeks to ensure legal identity for all. She added that diaspora enrolment has increased by 52 percent, while partnerships with more than 50 public and private organisations have broadened access to identity services.

Outlining NIMC’s strategy, Coker-Odusote said the commission is anchored on three pillars, inclusion, protection, and empowerment. She assured Nigerians that the database remains secure despite rumours of breaches, and emphasised ongoing efforts to strengthen cybersecurity and expand enrolment nationwide.

President Tinubu also noted that the database’s capacity has been upgraded from 100 million to 250 million records, supported by over 1,500 enrolment devices across Nigeria and more than 200 centres abroad. He revealed that special enrolments have been carried out for refugees, internally displaced persons, and correctional facility inmates.

On security, he disclosed that over 30 fraudulent operators have been arrested, illegal centres shut down, and phishing sites dismantled. He further applauded NIMC’s ISO 27001:2022 certification for data protection, describing it as proof of compliance with global standards.

To enhance service delivery, Tinubu said NIMC has introduced a High Availability Verification Service with 99.9 percent uptime, modernised customer support tools, and improved staff welfare with promotions and salary reviews for over 2,800 personnel.

Reiterating the centrality of identity to his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the President stressed that the NIN is crucial for delivering social welfare programmes, student loans, agricultural subsidies, financial inclusion, effective national planning, and eliminating ghost beneficiaries from government initiatives.

“The NIN is more than just a number—it is a gateway to opportunity, security, and dignity,” Tinubu said. “Behind these enrolments are workers claiming pensions without fear of fraud, students accessing loans with ease, farmers receiving targeted incentives, and displaced persons obtaining humanitarian support. This is the true power of identity, and this is the progress we celebrate.”
