Nigeria Hosts First GITEX, Showcasing $6bn Tech Investments And Bold Digital Ambitions

0

Nigeria has taken a historic step in its digital transformation journey with the inauguration of its first homegrown edition of the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) in Abuja. The landmark event brought together global investors, startups, policymakers, and innovators, underscoring the country’s ambition to position itself as Africa’s technology and innovation powerhouse.

Speaking at the event, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, revealed that the state has attracted over $6 billion in direct foreign investment into its technology startup sector between 2019 and 2024. He said the milestone affirms Lagos as Africa’s “innovation capital,” noting that the city now accounts for more than 70% of Nigeria’s tech inflows and serves as a breeding ground for most of Africa’s unicorns.

“Lagos is no longer aspiring to transformation—it is living it,” Sanwo-Olu declared. “We are not just an economic powerhouse, we are Africa’s innovation capital.”

Highlighting Lagos’ digital infrastructure—including hyperscale data centres, submarine cables, and a city-wide fibre grid—the governor pointed to projects like the Blue Line electric rail system, powered by a locally designed digital Cowry Card, as proof of homegrown innovation driving real-world impact.

Sanwo-Olu also emphasised Lagos’ investment in talent development, with a Science and Research Fund that has supported startups with seed grants ranging from ₦50 million to ₦80 million over the past six years.

Earlier, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, unveiled a roadmap to expand the digital economy’s contribution to Nigeria’s GDP from the current 16–18% to 21% by 2027. He said Nigeria is now “a digitally connected and globally competitive nation” backed by infrastructure, talent, and creativity.

Tijani noted that Nigeria’s stock exchange lists technology firms among its top performers, surpassing oil companies, and highlighted Nollywood and Afrobeats as examples of Nigeria’s thriving creative-tech fusion. He further announced plans for a 90,000-kilometer fibre backbone under Project BRIDGE, nationwide digital skills training through the 3MTT initiative, and landmark legislation on e-governance and the digital economy.

The Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, stressed that Nigeria is “ready to lead the future economy,” crediting resilience and deliberate policies for making the country home to five of Africa’s unicorns. He traced the journey back to the introduction of Nigeria’s cashless policy over a decade ago, which catalysed fintech growth.

At the event, Ms. Trixie LohMirmand, Executive Vice President of Dubai World Trade Centre and CEO of KAOUN, described Nigeria as “a global beacon of innovation and resilience,” noting that Lagos serves as a unique testbed for technology: “If your product survives Lagos, it can thrive anywhere in the world.”

The inaugural GITEX Nigeria attracted over 650 startups, 200 investors, and participants from more than 40 countries, marking the country’s arrival on the global tech stage.

As the conference unfolds, the message from Nigerian leaders is clear: the country is not only participating in the digital economy—it is shaping it. With Lagos leading the charge, Nigeria is positioning itself as Africa’s premier investment destination for technology, innovation, and creativity.

AMAC Distances Self From Mabushi Bridge Incident, Blames Touts

0

The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has clarified that those involved in the recent tragic incident on Mabushi Bridge were not its staff or representatives.

In a statement signed by Kingsley Madaki, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs to the Executive Chairman, AMAC, the council expressed condolences to the bereaved family, describing the occurrence as deeply regrettable.

“Our investigation reveals that the perpetrators are touts, commonly known as *agbero*, who operate around the Area 1 Roundabout,” the statement said. “They allegedly dragged a commuter from the roundabout to Mabushi Banex junction, where the incident occurred, leading to loss of lives.”

AMAC stressed its commitment to residents’ safety and urged relevant authorities to carry out a thorough investigation to prevent a recurrence.

It recalled that on February 13, 2025, AMAC Chairman, Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, had raised the alarm over touts impersonating council officials and harassing motorists in the FCT. He noted that genuine AMAC staff undergo biannual training, often in collaboration with security agencies, to ensure lawful and professional conduct in revenue collection.

“Unfortunately, many touts are tarnishing AMAC’s image by harassing motorists in our name. Our staff are trained to operate within the law, unlike these impostors. They wear jackets and claim to be AMAC staff, but when apprehended, they identify themselves as members of NURTW or DOAS under the FCTA,” Maikalangu stated.

To address the menace, the Chairman has directed the creation of a special task force to apprehend touts and restore public confidence.

AMAC appealed for continued cooperation from residents, assuring them of its dedication to maintaining peace, safety, and integrity in its operations.

Women’s Champions League: Support Bayelsa Queens Campaign, Diri Urges Corporate Bodies

0

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has again appealed to corporate organisations in the state to complement his administration’s effort in sports development.

According to a press release on Thursday September 4, 2025, signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri particularly called on them to support Nigeria’s representatives in this year’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Champions League, Bayelsa Queens.

The state-run football team are in the final of the zonal WAFU B Champions League qualifiers in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, and will play the host, ASEC Mimosas, on Friday.

The Bayelsa governor made the appeal on Wednesday during
the state’s 172nd executive council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa.

He stressed the need for corporate bodies and well-meaning individuals to emulate the shining example of Premium Trust Bank in demonstrating their corporate social responsibility.

He said during the last edition of the Governor’s Prosperity Cup competition, the financial institution donated a Coaster bus to Bayelsa Queens, and that the bank had been a good corporate citizen in the state.

The governor congratulated Bayelsa Queens on their remarkable performance in the championship and enjoined Bayelsans and investors to encourage the team.

He said: “We should have our Bayelsa Queens in prayers and whatever substance you have as a Bayelsan in support of what the state government is doing for our team should be done.

“Businesses and oil companies operating on our land should encourage our girls in whatever way that they can to promote sports.”

In the maiden edition of the continental tournament in 2022, Bayelsa Queens won the WAFU B qualifiers, also in Côte d’Ivoire, and went on to place third in the Champions League competition held in Morocco.

Fidelity Bank Deepens Push For Non-Oil Exports Through FNITCC Platform

0

By Nume Ekeghe

Nigeria’s diversification drive has gathered momentum in recent years as government initiatives push to reduce dependence on crude oil and strengthen non-oil sectors as engines of growth. From the Central Bank of Nigeria’s RT200 programme to incentives offered by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), the country has implemented policies designed to encourage exporters, boost foreign exchange inflows, and integrate local enterprises into global value chains.

Complementing these efforts, Fidelity Bank Plc has steadily positioned itself as one of the private-sector leaders advancing the country’s non-oil export agenda. Through its flagship initiative—the Fidelity Nigeria International Trade & Creative Connect (FNITCC), the bank has built a global platform that links Nigerian exporters with international buyers, diaspora markets, and strategic investors.

For a country where oil revenues remain vulnerable to global shocks, FNITCC is more than a corporate innovation. It is a deliberate tool to help Nigeria unlock new streams of foreign exchange, strengthen small businesses, and showcase the creativity and resilience of its people to the world.

Beyond Commodities: A Broader Vision

The design of FNITCC reflects Fidelity’s conviction that Nigeria’s future global competitiveness lies not only in raw commodities but also in value-added goods and services. The expo has created space for agriculture and consumer-packaged goods, but equally for sectors such as fashion, cosmetics, fintech, and the wider creative economy.

The federal government has also increasingly emphasized the need for value addition rather than the mere export of raw commodities. A recent policy directive on shea butter, for instance, underscores this shift by encouraging local processors to refine and package the product before it leaves Nigeria. The move aligns with broader industrialisation and job-creation objectives, while ensuring that the country captures more value across the production chain—a goal that platforms like FNITCC are now helping to actualize by connecting these upgraded products to international markets.

FNITCC events are immersive and deliberately multi-sectoral.

They combine product exhibitions, breakout sessions, diaspora investment panels, curated workshops, art displays, and even theatrical and fashion performances. The aim is clear: to connect the breadth of Nigerian enterprise to global markets, while ensuring that exporters are able to meet international standards and access the finance required to scale.

In a statement announcing this year’s FNITCC, Fidelity Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, said: “Since 2022 when we hosted the maiden edition, FNITCC has evolved beyond a platform for promoting Nigeria’s non-oil exports to become a veritable showcase of the immense value Nigeria has to offer the global market.”

London to Houston to Atlanta: Showcasing Nigeria on the Global Stage

The FNITCC journey began in London in November 2022. Hosted at the Novotel London West, the inaugural event drew more than 100 exhibitors and 90 speakers, attracting over 1,000 daily attendees. It unlocked trade and investment deals worth about $250 million, validating the proposition that Nigerian businesses could compete abroad if given the right exposure and institutional support.

A year later, the platform moved to Houston, Texas a city known for its energy base but also home to one of the largest Nigerian diaspora communities in the United States. FNITCC Houston, held in October 2023, attracted over 160 Nigerian and U.S.-based businesses across fintech, commodities, fashion, agriculture, and creative industries. The highlight was a landmark $40 million pre-export finance facility in favour of JohnVents Industries, one of Nigeria’s fast-rising cocoa exporters. The facility, arranged by Afreximbank with Fidelity Bank as the local administrative agent, demonstrated how trade promotion could be matched with access to finance to deliver real outcomes for exporters.

This month, September 18-20, 2025, FNITCC is heading to Atlanta, Georgia. The choice is deliberate: Atlanta has become a hub for Black entrepreneurship, cultural exchange, and diaspora investment in the United States. Its large Nigerian and African diaspora population provides a ready market for ethnic and value-added products, while its robust chambers of commerce and international trade networks make it an attractive gateway for exporters. Fidelity is also partnering with Amplify Africa, the organizers of AFRICON, one of the largest African diaspora business and culture summits in the U.S., to amplify the reach of this edition.

By situating FNITCC in Atlanta, Fidelity Bank is tapping into a dynamic U.S. market and aligning with diaspora-led networks that can act as long-term anchors for trade and investment flows.

Onyeali-Ikpe added: “As part of our commitment to developing platforms that promote economic growth, creativity, and sustainable trade both within Nigeria and internationally, we are pleased to announce the third edition of FNITCC. Since 2022, when we hosted the inaugural edition, the FNITCC expo has been at the heart of driving global market access for local businesses, and I am delighted that this year we will be in the city of Atlanta, USA.”

Consolidating Success and Expanding Scope

Between the London and Houston editions, FNITCC generated a consolidated deal pipeline of over $500 million. For Nigeria, where non-oil exports are still under $5 billion annually, this is a significant achievement. It demonstrates the potential of structured, private-sector-led platforms to complement government diversification policies with measurable outcomes.

FNITCC Atlanta is expected to attract more than 3,000 participants—including exporters, U.S. buyers, policymakers, investors, multinational corporations, and development finance institutions. Programming highlights include B2B matchmaking sessions, policy dialogues, diaspora investment roundtables, and sector-specific workshops. Strategic sectors in focus will include agriculture, consumer goods, energy transition minerals, fashion, beauty, and creative services.

By positioning exporters side-by-side with financiers, regulators, and global buyers, FNITCC provides the missing ecosystem Nigerian businesses often lack when venturing into foreign markets.

Nigeria’s FX Outlook and the Case for Diversification

The timing of Fidelity’s intervention could not be more strategic. The naira has shown greater stability in recent months, supported by a mix of policy reforms and improving inflows, helping to restore investor confidence in the broader economy. With global attention once again turning to Nigeria’s vast potential, this is an opportune moment to deepen non-oil export growth.

The long-term case remains clear: as the world transitions away from fossil fuels, Nigeria cannot afford to depend solely on crude oil revenues. Building new, resilient export pillars is essential to sustaining growth, creating jobs, and securing foreign exchange inflows that are less vulnerable to commodity price swings.

FNITCC sits at the heart of this shift. By showcasing value-added goods, creating structured access to global markets, and linking exporters to international buyers, the platform helps convert Nigeria’s comparative advantages into tangible competitiveness. In doing so, it strengthens the broader diversification drive while reinforcing the growing sense of economic optimism.

A Shared Path to Diversification

Ultimately, what makes FNITCC unique is its ability to bring together policy, finance, and culture under a single umbrella. It complements government-led initiatives and continental frameworks like AfCFTA by giving exporters practical exposure to international markets. It also addresses the financing gap through partnerships with institutions such as Afreximbank, ensuring that deals struck at the expos are not just ceremonial but backed by capital. And by spotlighting Nigeria’s creative and service industries, fashion, fintech, music, and art, FNITCC underscores the country’s growing soft power as a source of foreign exchange in its own right.

In this way, FNITCC is more than an exhibition; it is a platform for national transformation. It embodies the collaboration between government policy and private initiative, while providing exporters the tools to compete on a global stage. From London to Houston and now Atlanta, it has grown into an institution that is helping Nigeria move closer to the long-held dream of economic diversification, reinforcing optimism that the non-oil sector can become the bedrock of a more resilient, export-led economy.

…. Explains Why Sawyer Was Chosen
…. Directs Redeployment Of Pension Board Staff

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, on Wednesday, swore in Dr. Wisdom Sawyer as the state’s 12th Head of Service.

According to a press release on Wednesday September 3, 2025, signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, Dr. Sawyer was appointed on Tuesday, September 2 following the retirement of his predecessor, Mrs Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema on August 31.

Governor Diri also swore in two Special Advisers on Legal Matters, Dr. Alabo Ozubide and Inemo Oruebimiekumo, during the 172nd state executive council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa.

The governor, who charged the 55-year-old HoS to exhibit a high sense of professionalism in executing his duties and ensure that the civil service remained loyal and disciplined, explained that he was appointed on merit.

He also stated that Sawyer was chosen based on integrity and as the most senior Permanent Secretary and not on any other primordial considerations.

His words: “You were appointed as Head of Service not because you are from the governor’s local government area but that you have proven to be a man of integrity. Also, among your peers, you are the most senior.

“There are some who are qualified by several other parameters but their dates of retirement are just one or two years left and l do not want to appoint another HoS before l leave office. Having gone through your resume, clearly you will outlive my administration the way l inherited your predecessor.”

The state’s helmsman appreciated the immediate past HoS, who he noted discharged her duties with utmost responsibility, describing her as among the finest in the civil service.

The governor directed the new HoS to ensure the redeployment of all staff of the state Pensions Board, including heads of departments, and that new postings be done.

“You are hereby directed to post out every civil servant in our Pensions Board, including those coming from the Ministry of Finance, from the Accountant General’s Office and all the heads of departments. New postings should be done and ensure that men and women of integrity are posted there. A report should be sent back to me.”

Diri equally charged the two Special Advisers to display the highest standards of integrity in the performance of their duties and continue to create synergy with the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

Clean Energy Drive: Gombe To Host Major CNG Hub As Inuwa Yahaya Seals Deal With Greenville LNG

0

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has met with a delegation from Greenville CNG/LNG, led by its Chairman, Mr. Eddy van den Broeke, as part of efforts to fast-track the establishment of a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Hub in Gombe State.

The meeting, held at the Gombe State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, was attended by the Company’s Managing Director, Ritu Sahajwalla and the Chief Executive Officer, Mutiu Sommonu.

They held talks to finalize plans for a major energy infrastructure project designed to deliver cleaner, safer and more cost-effective fuel options for both transportation and industrial purposes in Gombe and beyond.

The planned CNG hub will include Liquefied to Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) Refill Stations.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya confirmed that the State Government has already allocated land for the project and approved engineering designs.

“We are committed to leveraging natural gas to make transportation more affordable, reduce environmental pollution and stimulate industrial growth in our region.”

Mr. Eddy VdB, noted that
One of the biggest challenges in Northern Nigeria has been the absence of gas pipelines, which limits access to affordable clean energy.

The Greenville-led project, he said, will help bridge this gap through trucking of LNG from the South to Gombe, where it will be regasified and distributed as CNG for various uses.

He praised the leadership and vision of Governor Inuwa Yahaya, noting that the strategic location and enabling policies of Gombe make it ideal for such a regional gas hub.

The CNG hub is expected to significantly reduce the cost of transportation by providing cheaper fuel alternatives for vehicles, including public transport systems.

Plans are already underway to introduce CNG-powered tricycles and other vehicles as part of the State’s evolving transportation master plan.

In addition to public use, CNG conversion centres will be established to help vehicle owners transition from petrol and diesel to natural gas, further boosting energy security and lowering emissions.

According to officials at the meeting, the next phase involves mobilizing equipment and resources to the project site, finalizing technical documentation, and the ground breaking to ensure smooth implementation and adoption.

Recall that a Director from Greenville CNG/LNG, Alhaji Yusuf Zaiyana, was recently in Gombe alongside a technical team to inspect and collect drawings as well as approvals for the four hectares of land allocated to the company by Governor Inuwa Yahaya.

According to him, Greenville plans to invest more than $2 million CNG and LCNG projects with mobilization to site set to commence soon.

Once completed, the CNG hub in Gombe will serve the state, the North-East and parts of the North-West, contributing to job creation, cost reduction and a cleaner environment.

No Plot Against AIG Fayoade, No Removal Order; Integrity Youth Alliance Defends IGP Egbetokun

The Integrity Youth Alliance has dismissed as false and misleading a report by Sahara Reporters alleging that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun is “embattled” and plotting against Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, who heads Zone 2 Command, Lagos.

In a statement signed by its Spokesperson, Danjuma Lamido, the Alliance described the publication as a deliberate attempt to create disunity within the Nigeria Police Force. It clarified that IGP Egbetokun has neither ordered the removal of AIG Fayoade nor engaged in any secret plot to frustrate his career advancement.

The group stressed that the relationship between the Police Chief and AIG Fayoade remains “cordial and professional,” adding that claims of Fayoade’s redeployment were entirely untrue.

On succession matters, the Alliance explained that the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police is governed by law and not by personal interests. Citing Section 18(8a) of the Police Act 2020 (as amended), it noted that the office of the IGP carries a four-year tenure irrespective of retirement age.

The Alliance further debunked Sahara Reporters’ claims that the Police Force under Egbetokun is divided and struggling with nepotistic promotions and pension crises, describing them as “a figment of imagination.”

It added that the report reflects Sahara Reporters’ “serial spread of falsehoods” aimed at undermining the progress made by the current police leadership.

Reacting to calls by former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore for the IGP’s resignation, the group said Sowore “lacks the moral standing” to question the tenure of a constitutionally appointed Police Chief.

The Integrity Youth Alliance reaffirmed its support for IGP Egbetokun, commending his commitment to professionalism, reform, and service to the nation.

It also urged Nigerians to disregard the Sahara Reporters publication and continue supporting the police under his leadership.

IGP Egbetokun Deploys DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi To Delta State Command

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the deployment of the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Operations, Delta State Command.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, the posting reflects the confidence of the Force leadership in DCP Adejobi’s wealth of experience, professionalism, and capacity to strengthen operational strategies in the Command.

IGP Egbetokun commended DCP Adejobi for his outstanding service as the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, noting his commitment, professionalism, and significant contributions to enhancing the image and communication framework of the Force. He expressed confidence that Adejobi would replicate the same dedication and excellence in his new assignment.

Meanwhile, the Force Headquarters disclosed that arrangements are being finalized for the appointment of a new Force Public Relations Officer.

South West Youth Alliance Debunks Report On DCP Muyiwa Adejobi

The South West Youth Alliance has dismissed as false a report by Sahara Reporters alleging that Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Muyiwa Adejobi, was removed from his position and transferred to Delta State Command over controversies and scandals.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Director, Adenike Ajanlekoko, the group described the report as “mischievous and misleading,” insisting that Adejobi’s redeployment was in line with the Nigeria Police Force’s normal career progression structure.

The statement stressed that Adejobi was not removed from office but redeployed in accordance with his rank as a Deputy Commissioner of Police, adding that his promotion and transfer were not punitive measures.

The group faulted Sahara Reporters’ portrayal of Adejobi as a “controversial officer,” maintaining that he had no record of scandals and was never accused of repressing social media users or shielding the police from accountability. Instead, they noted, his leadership was defined by professionalism, transparency, and public engagement.

On allegations linking Adejobi to “women issues,” the South West Youth Alliance said such claims were fabrications aimed at tarnishing his image, describing him as a responsible family man dedicated to his marriage.

The group further emphasized Adejobi’s achievements as Force PRO, including registering all Police Public Relations Officers (PPROs) as members of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to strengthen professional standards. According to the group, his tenure brought discipline, order, and excellence to police public communication.

The South West Youth Alliance urged Sahara Reporters to desist from publishing falsehoods and character attacks, while expressing pride in Adejobi’s contributions to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.
