Ndigbo Young Professionals Counter Sowore’s Allegations Against IGP Egbetokun

The Ndigbo Young Professionals has dismissed allegations that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, is secretly seeking an ex parte detention order against African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Ambassador Chukwuemeka Chinonso, the group described the claim as “false, baseless, and a calculated attempt to mislead Nigerians.”

According to the statement, IGP Egbetokun is currently in Cape Town, South Africa, participating in the 27th INTERPOL African Regional Conference, where he is engaging in efforts to strengthen international collaboration in tackling transnational crime and enhancing global law enforcement cooperation.

“For the avoidance of doubt, IGP Egbetokun has no personal issues with Sowore,” the group stressed. “The charges he is facing are purely legal matters arising from his alleged forgery of a police wireless message, posting of a fake police signal, and other inciting materials on his Facebook page aimed at provoking officers of the Force and the general public into mutiny against the Federal Government.”

The group further described attempts to portray the matter as political persecution as “misleading and irresponsible,” insisting that the police under Egbetokun’s leadership remain committed to upholding the rule of law.

It also advised Sowore’s lawyers to counsel him to remain law-abiding instead of “constituting a nuisance to society under the guise of activism.”

Reiterating its support for the Nigeria Police Force, the Ndigbo Young Professionals called on Nigerians to disregard what it termed propaganda aimed at distracting from ongoing police reforms and international partnerships.

Labour Party Condoles With Katsina Over Mosque Massacre, Demands Urgent Security Reforms

0

The Labour Party (LP) has expressed deep condolences to the people of Katsina State following the massacre of worshippers in Unguwar Mantau, Malumfashi Local Government Area, describing the incident as another tragic reminder of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its interim National Publicity Secretary, Prince Tony Akeni, the party condemned the killing of 30 Muslims during morning prayers, the burning alive of more than 20 others in their homes, and the abduction of 76 villagers by suspected bandits. The abducted victims were later confirmed rescued.

The LP also sympathised with Katsina’s Acting Governor, Alhaji Faruk Lawal Jobe, community leaders, and families of the victims. It noted that residents of at least 16 communities in the state had subsequently been forced to pay a ₦15 million levy to bandits, while farmers were restricted to working on their land only between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. under threats of abduction or death.

Citing Nigeria’s soaring defence and police budgets, the party lamented that insecurity has persisted despite heavy government spending. It accused successive administrations of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of failing to decisively confront terrorism, likening the death toll from violent crimes in Nigeria to casualties in war-torn Ukraine.

The statement further criticised National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for failing to provide proactive security intelligence, urging him to “take a refresher course in counter-insurgency” or resign.

“The principal function of government is the security of lives and property. If President Tinubu cannot guarantee this, he should sack Ribadu, reconfigure the armed services, and step up, or do Nigerians a patriotic favour by stepping down himself,” the LP declared.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to a Nigeria where lives, property, freedom of worship, and livelihoods are protected without fear of terror or criminality.

Cattle Theft In West Africa Emerging As Major Source Of Terrorism Financing, Says IGP Egbetokun At INTERPOL Conference

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has warned that cattle theft in West Africa has evolved from a rural nuisance into a sophisticated criminal enterprise that now fuels terrorism, radicalisation, and global security threats.

Egbetokun made the disclosure while presenting a paper titled “Cattle Theft in West Africa: A Conduit for Terrorism Financing and CBRNE Threat” at the 27th INTERPOL African Regional Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Nigerian police chief stressed that rustling, once an opportunistic crime, has become an organised industry in which stolen livestock are laundered through informal markets and converted into cash for insurgents and bandits.

“A single raid of 200 cattle can generate as much as \$60,000 in illicit sales overnight. What looks like ordinary livestock commerce may, in fact, be the financing arm of terrorism,” he said.

Terrorism and CBRNE Linkages

Egbetokun highlighted evidence showing direct links between cattle theft and extremist groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, and armed militants in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria’s North-West region. These groups, he said, impose “cattle taxes,” raid villages, and channel proceeds into arms purchases and recruitment.

He also raised concerns about the intersection of cattle theft with chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) threats. Illegal livestock movements, he explained, not only spread zoonotic diseases like anthrax but also exploit the same smuggling corridors used for trafficking radioactive materials and components for improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Humanitarian Impact

Beyond security risks, the IGP drew attention to the devastating human toll of rustling, noting that it displaces families, fuels farmer–herder clashes, deepens poverty, and in some cases, pushes desperate victims into joining extremist groups.

Nigeria’s Response

Egbetokun outlined Nigeria’s multi-pronged strategy against cattle theft, including special police operations such as Operation Puff Adder and Operation Hadarin Daji, collaboration with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to track illicit proceeds, and deployment of drones, geo-mapping, and biometric tagging pilots in high-risk corridors.

He added that community engagement with traditional rulers, vigilante groups, and pastoralist associations has improved grassroots intelligence, while Nigeria’s investment in forensic labs and veterinary surveillance units is enhancing CBRNE preparedness.

Call for Regional Cooperation

The IGP urged African countries and international partners to intensify collaboration, stressing the role of INTERPOL in developing regional livestock crime databases, training on terror financing, and supporting cross-border task forces. He also called for stronger cooperation with ECOWAS, AU, UNODC, FAO, and IAEA to regulate livestock trade and protect Africa from becoming a “soft target” for CBRNE proliferation.

“Cattle theft is no longer just a pastoral crime. It is a strategic enabler of terrorism, a driver of radicalisation, and a multiplier of global security threats,” Egbetokun warned.

“If we confront it with intelligence and cooperation, we can choke off a vital artery of terror financing and safeguard our continent.”

Stakeholders Plan 1st National Conference On STI Communication

0

Stakeholders in the nation’s science, technology and innovation sector are set to hold the inaugural National Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation Communication (STICOMMSLOC) in collaboration with the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja.

The chairman, Local Organization Committee of the conference, Dr. Bosco Okolo-Obi, speaking at a press briefing yesterday at the university premises said the maiden conference with the theme, “Communicating Science, Technology, and Innovation for National Development”, will hold from 21st-23rd October, 2025, at the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja.

He said the conference would bring key stakeholders together to promote researches and policies that are tailored to grow Nigeria’s Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) sector.

According to him, without effective translation of research into policies, products, and public understanding, the knowledge economy that Nigeria aspires to build would remain a distant dream, noting that the conference seeks to address these challenges.

Okolo-Obi said “For the first time, we are bringing together researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, the media, educators, and the public on a single platform to chart a new course. Our focus will be on breaking barriers of technical language, strengthening partnerships, training a new generation of science communicators, and advocating for policies that institutionalize science communication in Nigeria.”

L-R:Member of the Local Organizing Committee, and Director of Information, New Media and Protocol, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Mr. Olusegun Ayeoyenikan; President, African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu; Chairman, Local Organization Committee, Dr. Bosco Okolo-Obi; and Publisher, Africa Science and Technology Magazine, Bonny Alams at a press conference to announce the inaugural National Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation Communication (STICOMMSLOC) in Abuja yesterday.

He said the initiative aligns fully with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes economic diversification, innovation-driven growth, human capital development, and inclusive governance where knowledge is translated into wealth, and innovation creates opportunities for every citizen.

In his welcome remarks, President, African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu said the institution is proud to be the host of the conference, adding that the school has an innovation hub where work is ongoing to commercialize its recent outputs. The school secured 10 patents in the last one year.

Also speaking, a member of the Local Organizing Committee, and Director Information, New Media and Protocol at the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Mr. Olusegun Ayeoyenikan said there is need for citizens to promote the culture of STI as it is key to Nigeria’s industrial development.

“This is a milestone when it comes to building the consciousness to be patriotic because what we have is basically the lack of culture for science, technology and innovation”, he said while calling on all stakeholders to strive to push the process.

The LOC also urged the media to play a pivotal role in driving the initiative, urging journalists to own the event which will be held annually to improve Nigeria’s push for sustainability in STI.

Opinion: Richard Akinnola Should Stop Unwarranted Attacks On The IGP

By Danjuma Lamido

By attacking the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over unfounded allegations of targeting Omoyele Sowore and Sahara Reporters, Richard Akinnola has once again displayed a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.

His recent statement is not only unnecessary but also reeks of bias and calculated blackmail.

The truth remains that the IGP has never singled out Sowore or Sahara Reporters for persecution. The Nigeria Police Force operates within its constitutional mandate, and no amount of propaganda can erase that fact. If Mr. Akinnola claims otherwise, he should provide evidence beyond baseless rhetoric.

More importantly, if he genuinely cares about the rule of law, Akinnola should point out where notorious terrorists and bandits like Bello Turji can be apprehended. Nigerians are certain that if Turji’s exact location were revealed today, the Federal Government would not hesitate to take him before a competent court to face terrorism, money laundering, and other criminal charges. Instead of shielding suspects with the guise of activism, Mr. Akinnola should channel his energy toward ensuring that real criminals are exposed.

Contrary to his misleading assertion, the IGP’s actions are not “unprecedented in a democracy.” They are consistent with the duties of the Nigeria Police as enshrined in the law.

There is no personal vendetta between the IGP and Sowore. As a lawyer, Richard Akinnola should know better than to obstruct due process with unguarded commentary.

The courts are available to test the evidence presented, and that is where Sowore’s guilt or innocence will be determined, not in the pages of newspapers or social media.

Furthermore, the Nigeria Police Force has the legal powers to investigate issues relating to terrorism financing and money laundering.

This does not in any way amount to usurping the responsibilities of the National Security Adviser or the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. It is laughable that Akinnola, a lawyer of many years, pretends not to know this.

Equally laughable is his insinuation that the IGP’s actions cast a negative shadow on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Nothing could be farther from the truth. President Tinubu remains committed to transparency, the rule of law, and justice.

The attempt to drag his administration into a fabricated narrative of political persecution is cheap mischief and should be condemned by all right-thinking Nigerians.

If Akinnola is truly interested in fairness, he should focus on holding Omoyele Sowore and Sahara Reporters accountable for their ceaseless spread of fake news, propaganda, and defamatory publications.

He should refrain from blackmailing decent Nigerians and stop using his medium to malign public officers who are simply discharging their constitutional duties.

The rule of law must prevail. Richard Akinnola must therefore allow the courts to decide Sowore’s fate instead of attempting to incite public sentiment against the Inspector General of Police.

Integrity Youth Alliance Counters Sowore’s Claims Against IGP

The Integrity Youth Alliance has dismissed as false and misleading the comments made by African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, during an interview on News Central TV, where he alleged that the charges against him by the Nigeria Police Force under the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, were “baseless and desperate.”

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Kelvin Adegbenga, the group described Sowore’s claims as reckless, stressing that there are no inconsistencies in the charges filed against him.

According to the group, the Nigeria Police Legal Directorate is made up of seasoned professionals with competence, integrity, and experience, and its work is firmly rooted in due process and the rule of law, not political sentiments.

The statement further noted that it is not Sowore’s place to declare the outcome of a matter pending in court. It urged him to allow the judiciary to determine whether the evidence presented supports or disproves the allegations against him, rather than attempting to sway public opinion through media appearances.

The Alliance also reminded Sowore that commenting extensively on cases already before the court could amount to contempt, stressing that his approach amounts to a mockery of due process and an attempt to blackmail respected public institutions.

Reaffirming confidence in the leadership of IGP Egbetokun, the Integrity Youth Alliance said the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law.

ACReSAL National Coordinator Hails Gombe Governor For Setting Pace In Environmental Restoration

0

The National Coordinator of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, Abdulhamid Umar, has showered glowing commendation on Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, for his exceptional leadership and commitment to environmental restoration and sustainable development through the ACReSAL project.

During a courtesy visit to the Governor in his office, Umar praised Inuwa Yahaya for not only accelerating implementation in his state but also positioning Gombe as a model for other Northern states and subnational governments across the country.

He noted that the approach of Gombe State government to environmental sustainability, particularly in land restoration, water management and climate resilience, deserves replication across Nigeria.

“We are truly impressed with the quality and speed of work being executed in Gombe State under the ACReSAL Project. You are not just leading in Gombe, but driving implementation across the entire Northern region. This is the kind of political will we’ve always advocated for. We’ll have to bring the Federal Government and other subnationals to Gombe to see the magic happening here”.

The NPC also expressed appreciation for the Governor’s continuous support and strategic partnership, which he said have enabled the smooth and impactful rollout of ACReSAL projects in Gombe state.

In his response, Governor Inuwa Yahaya assured the ACReSAL National Coordinator of his continued commitment to environmental sustainability.

“We’re up and doing to put life back into our land and ensure that our people, who are mostly farmers can fully enjoy the benefits of God-endowed natural resources,” the Governor said.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya, who is also the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, said the success of ACReSAL in Gombe is predicated on value of focused leadership and effective partnership, adding that he would invite the National Coordinator to address the NSGF during one of its upcoming meetings.

“Your passion and technical leadership are clear. We need other governors to hear directly from you,” the said.

He commended the ACReSAL team for their hands-on approach, pledging that Gombe will continue to lead by example in tackling desertification, land degradation and other climate-related challenges facing the state and the Northern region.

IGP Egbetokun Urges Nigerians To Reject Illegal “Mobilisation Fees” By Police Officers

Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has called on Nigerians to resist any demand for “mobilisation fees” by police officers before carrying out their duties, describing the practice as illegal and unknown to the Nigeria Police Force.

The police chief, represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Legal Services, Ohiozoba Ehiede, made the appeal during the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference in Enugu.

Egbetokun stressed that it is the statutory responsibility of the police to handle complaints that could threaten peace and order and to work towards their speedy resolution without financial inducement.

“I want to state that this issue of mobilisation is unknown to the Nigeria Police. It is not in our statutory books. If you go to the police station, go online, type CRU Nigeria Police and lay your complaints there, it will be addressed adequately,” he said.

The IGP further revealed that at least 250 new lawyers who will soon be called to the Bar would be absorbed into the police workforce to strengthen the Force’s Legal Directorate and enhance service delivery.

On complaints raised against the Tiger Base Unit in Owerri, Imo State, Egbetokun assured that investigations would be carried out into the alleged misconduct of its operatives.

He also emphasised that reforms under the Police Act were being fully implemented, with renewed focus on human rights education in training institutions. “All we ask is a little time for Nigerians to know that the police have taken a paradigm shift,” he added.

At the conference, senior lawyers raised concerns about the role of the legal profession in shaping society. Professor Mike Ozekhome (SAN) criticised the NBA for turning its annual conference into a “ritual,” lamenting that lawyers were “now politicking more than professional politicians.”

Similarly, Professor Joy Ezeilo (SAN) noted that discussions on rights and security must take into account women, gender, and children, stressing the need for inclusive approaches by security agencies.

Gov Diri Pays Tribute As Bayelsa Head Of Service Retires

0

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has extolled the virtues of the outgoing state Head of Service, Mrs Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema, saying she served meritoriously.

Speaking during the weekly state executive council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa, Governor Diri said Mrs Charles-Onyema exemplary dedication was a lesson for all those in service, saying those who serve well will be promoted by God.

His Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted him as saying that even when it seemed nobody was watching, those in service must ensure that they do what was right at all times as service without blemish brings reward.

Stating that the departing Head of Service will be missed, Diri urged civil servants to put in their best and add value to the system.

He said: “In anything you do, if human beings do not watch you, somebody else is watching, and that is God. If you do it well, He will always promote you by using men and women.

“We have heard her story and it should be an inspiration to all of us that when you serve well, you will be promoted.”

In her remarks, Mrs. Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema, said she served in the civil service for over 20 years and would be retiring as she clocks 60 years.

She said the service was not a dumping ground but a place of professionalism where people can grow.

She expressed gratitude to Governor Diri for retaining her as Head of Service after her appointment by his predecessor, saying she had a great time serving the government.

She urged civil servants to work as a team to acheive success and always uphold the ethics of the service.

Charles-Onyema expressed optimism that her successor would continue from where she stopped and take the service to greater heights.

Prioritising Education Has Positive Results, Says Gov Diri As Bayelsa Tertiary Institutions Submit Accreditation Reports

0

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said his administration’s investment in the education sector has yielded positive results.

According to a press release on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri stated this on Wednesday during the 171st State Executive Council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa, when he received the accreditation reports of various programmes from the heads of state-owned tertiary Institutions.

The Bayelsa governor said the government’s huge investment in the sector was informed by his conviction that education was the bedrock of development as no society can develop beyond its level of education.

He noted that accreditation of the programmes was a testament to the fact that the administration was committed to uplifting the sector and promised to keep investing in education.

He recalled that there were issues of non-accreditation of programmes in tertiary institutions in the state when he assumed office and that since 2020, the government had invested over N20 billion in its drive to correct the anomaly.

The state’s helmsman acknowledged that the Niger Delta University (NDU) alone had contributed significantly to the human capital development of the state, stressing that most graduates in the civil service today were products of the institution.

He stressed the primacy of education among the young generation and urged the youths to shun cultism and all forms of vices, saying they had no reward.

His words: “The accreditation reports attest to the fact that we are working together so that our investments would not fail us. We have always said the priority of our administration was education and we will continue to invest in it as it is the pivot of societal development. No society can develop beyond its level of education.

“We are happy with the reports, which show that our investment of billions in the sector was not in vain. We met issues of accreditation when we came on board but we battled all of that. We have spent over N20 billion in ensuring that programmes in our institutions get accredited. We are doing this not only for ourselves but for generations yet unborn.”

Presenting the accreditation report of the institutions, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, said since 2022, the NDU has had a total of 116 programmes accredited while the Isaac Jasper Boro College of Education, which has been affiliated to NDU, has had 10 of its programmes also accredited.

Emelah said seven programmes were accredited at the Bayelsa Medical University, four of which were full while three got interim accreditation.

Also, he said the Bayelsa State Polytechnic, which got 16 of its programmes accredited, now offers more Higher National Diploma programmes than National Diploma programmes.
