Prioritising Education Has Positive Results, Says Gov Diri As Bayelsa Tertiary Institutions Submit Accreditation Reports

0

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said his administration’s investment in the education sector has yielded positive results.

According to a press release on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri stated this on Wednesday during the 171st State Executive Council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa, when he received the accreditation reports of various programmes from the heads of state-owned tertiary Institutions.

The Bayelsa governor said the government’s huge investment in the sector was informed by his conviction that education was the bedrock of development as no society can develop beyond its level of education.

He noted that accreditation of the programmes was a testament to the fact that the administration was committed to uplifting the sector and promised to keep investing in education.

He recalled that there were issues of non-accreditation of programmes in tertiary institutions in the state when he assumed office and that since 2020, the government had invested over N20 billion in its drive to correct the anomaly.

The state’s helmsman acknowledged that the Niger Delta University (NDU) alone had contributed significantly to the human capital development of the state, stressing that most graduates in the civil service today were products of the institution.

He stressed the primacy of education among the young generation and urged the youths to shun cultism and all forms of vices, saying they had no reward.

His words: “The accreditation reports attest to the fact that we are working together so that our investments would not fail us. We have always said the priority of our administration was education and we will continue to invest in it as it is the pivot of societal development. No society can develop beyond its level of education.

“We are happy with the reports, which show that our investment of billions in the sector was not in vain. We met issues of accreditation when we came on board but we battled all of that. We have spent over N20 billion in ensuring that programmes in our institutions get accredited. We are doing this not only for ourselves but for generations yet unborn.”

Presenting the accreditation report of the institutions, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, said since 2022, the NDU has had a total of 116 programmes accredited while the Isaac Jasper Boro College of Education, which has been affiliated to NDU, has had 10 of its programmes also accredited.

Emelah said seven programmes were accredited at the Bayelsa Medical University, four of which were full while three got interim accreditation.

Also, he said the Bayelsa State Polytechnic, which got 16 of its programmes accredited, now offers more Higher National Diploma programmes than National Diploma programmes.

The United Nations, UN, and the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, have organised a stakeholders’ dialogue to identify challenges facing the Niger Delta region and to align it with the UN’s Six Transitions and the Niger Delta Regional Development Strategy.

Speaking at the summit on the localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, in the Niger Delta region, NDDC Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Dr. Patterson Ogon, highlighted the key areas of focus to include problem identification, as well as solution design and prioritisation.

Ogon advocated the adequate use of the region’s natural resources, such as wind and solar, in generating power. He also called for the more effective and efficient use of ICT by the Niger Delta youths to achieve economic independence.

In the area of education, Ogon proposed a synergy between major stakeholders in the Niger Delta region to ensure that quality education was bequeathed to the people of the region. He urged Niger Deltans to take charge of growing their own food, capitalising on the fertile region.

A consultant for the Niger Delta Regional Development Strategy, Mr. Stephen Onerhime, outlined the strategies adopted for the region’s development. According to him, they include: economic, infrastructural, social and environmental development, as well as governance, institutions, security, law and order, and financing the plans.

He highlighted the advantages of the Niger Delta Regional Development Strategy, including a harmonised plan geared towards producing a standard, acceptable framework for the Niger Delta region; a monitoring and evaluation mechanism to ensure the impact of projects in the area, as well as the progress and effectiveness of these projects.

The Projects Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, HYPREP, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, noted that HYPREP has been implementing remedial activities at the 65 UNEP sites through soil treatment and groundwater treatment. He said that the adopted methodologies for the shoreline cleanup include shoreline treatment and artisanal refinery treatment.

The HYPREP coordinator, represented by Mr. Agunyi Damian Paul, said the agency had launched the world’s largest initiative to restore mangroves damaged by oil pollution, focusing on monitoring the growth and progress of planted mangroves towards maturity. According to him, this is significant for the Niger Delta region because it has the potential to protect shorelines, improve food security, mitigate the impacts of floods, control climate change, and provide adaptation benefits.

Disregard The Ranting Of Vulnerable Adults with Zero Basic Life Skills And Valueless Living ~ Eze

0

Erstwhile National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New People’s Democratic Party (nPD) and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze has advised some idle youths of Ikwerre local government area of Rivers State, who has taken up the task of disparaging former Minister of Transformation – Rt. Hon. Barr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and his cousin, a former Governor of the State, Sir Celestine Omehia, to disengage themselves from talking down on reputable personalities of the Ikwerre extraction who are respected across the country, and channel their political exuberance to learning relevant skill to improve their lives.

The mentally deranged adults who claimed to be campaigning for the All Progressives Congress in the Ikwerre Local Government Area ahead of the unlawfully planned local government election were quoted as saying that former Governors, Rotimi Amaechi and Celestine Omehia, who are from the area, will be retired from active politics after the 2027 general elections.

The idle talk credited to one faceless neophyte Obinna Ekem, was made during a gathering of a group of hunger-stricken hirelings in the name of local government campaign in Omagwa community of the local government area.

Reacting through a statement made available to the media, Chief Eze described the comment as the ranting of vulnerable adults with zero basic life skills and valueless living, who should be concerned about getting relevant skills to earn meaningful living rather than accepting briefs to smear the images of these illustrious Nigerians whose marks in the sands of time have remained permanently engraved on the hearts of people.

The APC Chief stressed that the local government election scheduled for August 30, is not only unlawful but also an embarrassment on recognized rules established to guide the conduct of elections in Nigeria and a slap on the power of the majority of the people.

Assuring that the planned charade in the name of local council election will be set aside in the fullness of time given the multitude of blunder and non-compliance with extant rules, Eze urged Rivers people to continue to distance themselves from the scheduled embarrassment of August 30, nothing that the Nigerian courts are already on the rescue with the floodgate of suits challenging the odious illegality.

He called on the rampaging young men parading as APC members to be careful of deliberate reckless misstatements with no intent and value safe to disparage personalities like Celestine Omehia and particularly Chibuike Amaechi who contributed in building the APC on the sincere footing of driving a change in our body-polity even though the party has today, derailed from its foundational mandate to becoming a disappointing nightmare for Nigerians having been over-ran by political bandits and buccaneers.

PSC Migrates To Performance Management System As Argungu Declares Staff Training Open

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has officially commenced the transition from the traditional Annual Performance Evaluation Reports (APER) to the modern Performance Management System (PMS), aimed at fostering accountability, transparency, and efficiency in public service.

According to a press release signed by the PSC Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani declaring open a two-day training programme for PSC staff on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, the Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd.), described the APER system as “obsolete and grossly defective,” stressing that it had long failed to deliver credible assessments of public servants.

According to Argungu, the APER framework encouraged manipulation, favouritism, and deception, which ultimately undermined competence and excellence in the public service. He expressed confidence that the PMS would address these shortcomings by providing a more practical and reliable tool for staff evaluation.

He urged staff participating in the training to take the exercise seriously, seek clarifications where necessary, and ensure maximum participation, noting that the Commission views the reform as a critical step toward institutional growth. He also commended the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation for deploying trainers to facilitate the programme.

In his welcome remarks, the PSC Director of Human Resource Management, Aminu Malumfashi, highlighted the limitations of the old APER system, describing it as largely end-of-year focused, paper-based, and incapable of capturing staff contributions, challenges, and developmental needs throughout the year.

Malumfashi explained that the PMS represents a “transformational shift” as it emphasizes continuous interaction between supervisors and subordinates, clear goal-setting, regular feedback, performance tracking, documentation, capacity building, and merit-based recognition.

“PMS is not just a technical framework; it is a culture shift. It aligns individual performance with organizational goals, ensures fairness and transparency in evaluations, and ultimately improves service delivery to Nigerians,” he stated.

The training programme will cover critical topics including: *Understanding MDAs Performance Management System (MPMS), Job Objectives Setting, Key Result Areas (KRAs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), as well as Dynamics of Cascading MDAs Deliverables to All Levels of Accountability (Hands-On).*

Sowore Must Stop Mocking Freedom Of Speech

By Ambassador Chukwuemeka Chinonso

After listening carefully to the live interview granted by Omoyele Sowore at the premises of the Federal High Court, I could not help but shake my head in disbelief.

Nigerians deserve the truth, not fabrications, from someone who parades himself as a presidential candidate and supposed defender of democracy.

Sowore boldly claimed that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, initiated a meeting with him. I put it squarely to him: where is the evidence? Nigeria is not a lawless society where allegations are thrown into the air like confetti without substantiation.

If Sowore truly has proof, let him present it to Nigerians and stop feeding the public with hollow propaganda.

Even more laughable is his statement that meeting with the IGP would amount to “legitimizing his office.”

Who exactly is Omoyele Sowore to imagine that his mere handshake would validate the constitutional authority of the IGP?

This is a dangerous brand of delusion that should not be entertained in a democratic society.

The IGP’s office is legitimized by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, not by the whims and fantasies of a man who has made a career out of stoking controversies.

Freedom of speech is a sacred right enshrined in our Constitution, but Sowore must stop mocking this freedom by weaponizing it as a tool for blackmail against respected public officials.

Nigerians fought hard for democracy, and it is not to be cheapened by reckless utterances designed to score cheap political points.

What is most worrisome is the role of his lawyer, who continues to enable these baseless excesses.

A good lawyer is expected to guide his client with sincerity and wisdom, not stand idly by while his client peddles lies at the court premises under the glare of the media.

It is a betrayal of the noble legal profession when an advocate allows his client to hide behind a façade of free speech to twist truth into falsehood.

A conscientious lawyer must never help a client bury peanuts of lies in the soil of public discourse.

Sowore must be reminded that leadership is about responsibility, not reckless chatter. Nigeria deserves better than media dramas designed to distract from the gravity of his ongoing legal battles. The court is the right place to present facts, not the roadside microphone.

It is time Sowore faced reality: propaganda cannot replace evidence, and lies cannot defeat truth. Nigerians are watching.

Integrity Youth Alliance Condemns Amnesty International Over Call To Drop Charges Against Sowore

The Integrity Youth Alliance has strongly condemned Amnesty International for calling on the Federal Government to drop criminal charges against African Action Congress (AAC) Presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

In a statement signed by its National Spokesperson, Danjuma Lamido, the group described Amnesty International’s position as “reckless and misguided,” insisting that Sowore is not facing politically motivated charges but genuine criminal cases instituted in line with Nigerian laws.

According to the Alliance, the charges against Sowore, which include forgery, criminal defamation, and the unlawful publication of confidential government documents, are grave offences that cannot be trivialized as political persecution.

“The Nigerian authorities will not terminate these legal processes or succumb to foreign propaganda aimed at emboldening lawlessness. Sowore must face the consequences of his utterances and actions, as freedom of expression does not amount to a license for disinformation, blackmail, or character assassination,” the statement read.

The group further dismissed claims that Sowore was tortured or ill-treated in custody, describing such allegations as “stage-managed drama” designed to mislead the public. It also criticized Sowore for what it termed “reckless accusations” against the Inspector General of Police, including allegations of forgery and defamatory publications.

The Integrity Youth Alliance stressed that the Federal Government is not out to stifle civic space, adding that while citizens are free to express opinions, no one should exploit activism or politics to undermine state institutions through unlawful acts.

The group, therefore, urged Amnesty International to “retrace its steps” and stop encouraging lawlessness by backing Sowore’s excesses, while calling on the AAC Presidential candidate to respect the rule of law and submit himself to justice.

The Law Must Take Its Course On Sowore’s Excesses

0

By Kelvin Adegbenga

Where was the public when Omoyele Sowore was relentlessly tarnishing the image of the Nigeria Police Force? Where were the so-called activists and sympathizers now drumming up support for him, when he was churning out malicious social media publications, even going as far as forging police signals, classified documents, to advance his selfish agenda?

Today, this same man is inviting the public to Court 8 of the Federal High Court in Abuja to witness his trial on criminal charges, but let us be clear: this trial is not a charade, neither is it persecution.

The law is very clear on forgery, criminal defamation, and the unlawful publication of confidential government documents.

The same public that was silent while Sowore dragged the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force in the mud must now rise to the responsibility of allowing the law to take its natural course.

For too long, individuals like Sowore have hidden under the guise of “activism” to spread disinformation, blackmail, and character assassination. This is not activism; it is criminality, and no society that values justice and order can allow it to stand.

Contrary to the cheap narratives being pushed around, there was never a time the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, initiated private meetings with Sowore.

For what value could such a meeting possibly bring to the work of the police? The IGP is focused on strengthening institutional capacity and safeguarding Nigerians, not entertaining opportunists whose stock-in-trade is propaganda.

Any insinuation to the contrary is an outright lie, crafted only to deceive the gullible.

Worse still, publications by Sowore insinuating that someone is a mistress to the IGP represent the height of defamation, malicious, reckless, and shameful.

This is not free speech; it is character assassination with intent to injure the reputation of an individual and the office he occupies. Such brazen falsehood cannot go unpunished in any decent society.

The court is not a theatre for propaganda, neither is it an avenue for Sowore to stage another round of his attention-seeking drama.

The proceedings are a constitutional process aimed at addressing specific criminal infractions. If found guilty, Sowore must face the consequences of his actions, as the law prescribes.

The time has come for Nigerians to separate activism from criminality, free speech from defamation, and patriotism from reckless propaganda.

Sowore’s excesses must not be glorified. The law is clear, and it must take its course—firmly, fairly, and without fear or favor.

Ndigbo Young Professionals Fault RULAAC Over Allegations Against Nigeria Police

The Ndigbo Young Professionals has dismissed as baseless the recent statement by the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), which alleged that the Nigeria Police Force has diverted its institutional energy into targeting “perceived regime critics” in the ongoing investigation of Omoyele Sowore.

In a statement signed by Ambassador Chukwuemeka Chinonso, the group described RULAAC’s position as “reckless, misleading, and deliberately designed to tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police Force.”

It noted that the recent directive of the Federal High Court in Abuja, ordering six commercial banks to provide account details linked to Sowore, was a lawful judicial process anchored on due process and constitutional authority.

“The Nigeria Police, through the courts, has the legal power to compel banks and other financial institutions to release account records of individuals under investigation. This is a global standard practice and a vital tool in combating terrorism financing, money laundering, and other fraudulent activities,” the statement read.

The group stressed that the police remain constitutionally empowered to investigate financial crimes and terrorism-related offences, dismissing RULAAC’s suggestion that such investigations amount to distractions as “mischievous” and “ignorant of the multifaceted capacity of the police.”

According to the group, the Nigeria Police has continued to demonstrate resilience in tackling violent crimes, kidnapping, banditry, and cybercrime while also pursuing financial crime investigations.

“The Police cannot and will not be distracted by sponsored statements from groups like RULAAC whose motives are questionable. Sowore’s activities call for legitimate scrutiny, and his trial is not, and will never be, a self-inflicted distraction for the Nigeria Police,” Chinonso stated.

The Ndigbo Young Professionals reaffirmed its support for the Nigeria Police Force, urging it to continue discharging its constitutional responsibilities without fear or favour.
