NEMA DG Leads Emergency Response To Abuja–Kaduna Train Derailment

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, on Tuesday led the agency’s rescue team to the scene of a train derailment along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor near the Idda sub-station.

A statement issued by the Head of NEMA’s Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, confirmed that the incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on August 26, 2025. While no fatalities were recorded, seven passengers sustained varying degrees of injury. They received first aid on-site before being transferred to hospital for further treatment.

The rescue operation, coordinated by NEMA, drew swift support from multiple agencies including the Nigerian military, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Their rapid intervention ensured the smooth conduct of the emergency response.

Officials of the Ministry of Transportation, led by the Acting Permanent Secretary, were also at the scene. The ministry has launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the derailment.

NDDC Will Support Security Agencies To Secure Waterways

The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, has assured that the Commission will continue to support security agencies to secure the waterways and boost the emerging blue economy in the country.

Speaking during the 2025 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association at Enugu’s International Conference Centre, the NDDC Chief Executive Officer noted that the Blue Economy is the future of the Niger Delta region.

According to Ogbuku, “The blue economy is central to the future of the Niger Delta region. It will strengthen our economy, lessen the burden of youth unemployment, improve food security, and support efforts to adapt to climate change.”

The NDDC boss, who led a team from the Commission, including the Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Alabo Boma Iyaye, observed that the national policy on marine and blue economy would require the support of the security agencies to succeed.

He emphasised the need for collaboration to ensure that the Niger Delta region remained peaceful, noting that development could only take place in an atmosphere of peace and security.

He stated: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to the peace and development of the Niger Delta region, and he has given us a matching order to embark on legacy projects that will stand the test of time and impact lives in the region. We cannot achieve this if there is no peace.”

“For us in NDDC, we will continue to collaborate with the security agencies to ensure that there is sustainable peace that will usher in development. The security forces have made so many sacrifices to ensure the safety of the region, and we will complement their efforts by executing legacy projects.”

Ogbuku noted: “We have always supported military formations and security agencies, and we are willing to do more. Last year, we did a lot for the Nigerian Navy, the Army and the Police. Our contributions are aimed at enhancing and supporting what the security agencies are doing.”

The Managing Director affirmed that the Commission was engaging all stakeholders to ensure harmony and cooperation in the task of developing the hitherto neglected Niger Delta region.

Speaking of the achievements of the commission in the last 25 years, he hinted that the frequent changes in management and boards of NDDC have caused setbacks to development in the region.

He stated, “For us at NDDC, we are targeting legacy projects. Our mandate is to complete those critical projects. We are intervening in critical areas because they are our responsibility.”

Ogbuku stated that under the leadership of the current Board and Management, the Commission has demonstrated a commitment to achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu, who is concerned about the development of the Niger Delta region.

The Managing Director affirmed the positive impact of the “Light Up the Niger Delta” campaign, which he observed had reduced criminality in the various communities and enhanced commercial activities in the areas.

He noted: “We decided to adopt the clean energy approach, which not only provides light but helps in the fight to mitigate the effects of climate change on our environment and earn carbon credits for the Commission.”

Ogbuku told the body of lawyers that the Commission was making progress with its various youth development and empowerment schemes, including building a comprehensive database of the youth population of the Niger Delta region.

Ogbuku said further: “We have also inaugurated the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture, NDCCITMA, which, along with the Bank of Industry, will serve as a platform for supporting young entrepreneurs in the region on a sustainable basis.

Intervening in the plenary session, an Executive Director at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Mr. Chudi Offodile, commended the NDDC’s strategy of inter-agency collaboration in maintaining peace in the maritime environment.

He noted: “The Niger Delta region provides an estimated 75 per cent of Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings. Also evident is that most of Nigeria’s maritime domain and international coastline outside of Lagos, all of which are within the Gulf of Guinea, are in the coast of the Niger Delta, and this region is critical to the development of Nigeria’s blue economy.”

South West Youth Alliance Exposes Falsehood In Sowore’s Allegations Against IGP Egbetokun

The South West Youth Alliance has dismissed as false and malicious the recent claims by African Action Congress (AAC) Presidential candidate, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, alleging that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, sought private meetings with him.

In a statement signed by its Director of Publicity, Adenike Ajanlekoko, the group described Sowore’s assertions as “baseless fabrications aimed at misleading the public and dragging the office of the IGP into needless controversy.”

The Alliance stressed that IGP Egbetokun never sought, requested, or pursued any private engagement with Sowore, adding that the Nigeria Police Force remains focused on pressing national security matters rather than indulging in political distractions.

“There is absolutely no cause for IGP Egbetokun to meet with a crook and serial blackmailer like Omoyele Sowore, whose notoriety is tied to forgery, misrepresentation, and the reckless theft and publication of official Nigeria Police signals,” the statement read.

The group further cautioned Sowore against attempting to blackmail credible public officers in his pursuit of political relevance, noting that “resorting to lies, forgeries, and falsehood against respected leaders will never earn him credibility among Nigerians.”

On governance, the Alliance emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is running a democratic government and not a “regime” as often mischaracterized by Sowore.

It reassured Nigerians that the administration remains firm, focused, and committed to delivering on its promises without compromising its integrity throughout its tenure.

Nigerian Women Innovators Shine At TICAD 9 In Japan

Nigerian women entrepreneurs took the spotlight at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), presenting groundbreaking tech-driven solutions that underscore the role of women in shaping Africa’s future.

The conference, themed “Co-Create Innovative Solutions with Africa”, gathered global leaders, investors, and development partners in Yokohama to explore new strategies for Africa’s growth. Among the highlights was a thematic session on the future of African startup ecosystems, where three Nigerian innovators—finalists from the IgniteHer Bootcamp for Women Entrepreneurs—pitched their solutions to Japanese investors and global stakeholders.

The IgniteHer Bootcamp, jointly organized by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), was designed to break barriers for women in tech, particularly challenges related to funding and mentorship.

Among the standout innovators was Kemisola Bolarinwa, founder of Nextwear Technologies, who presented an AI-powered device for early detection of breast abnormalities. Her innovation, targeting a critical public health challenge, showcased the impact of grassroots technology in healthcare.

Anita Ngeri, founder of Nibi’s Tech, pitched her edtech company’s mission to equip young Nigerians with digital skills in coding, robotics, artificial intelligence, and web design. Focused on the Niger Delta, Nibi’s Tech works with schools to bridge the digital divide and build the next generation of tech leaders.

According to a press release signed by Force Public Relations, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in Kebbi State, operatives rescued three victims abducted from Sangara Village, Shanga LGA, after a fierce gun battle with kidnappers at Shanga Hills. NEMA Conducts Flood Simulation Exercise In Rivers State To Boost Preparedness

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has intensified its 2025 flood preparedness strategy with a full-scale simulation exercise in Rivers State, designed to raise community awareness and strengthen coordinated response mechanisms.

The exercise, held in Mbiama, Ahoada West Local Government Area, was supported by the Rivers State Government and featured active participation from multiple stakeholders, including the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, first responders, and local volunteers.

Speaking at the event, NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, described the exercise as a proactive step toward safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and national assets. Represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Forecasting, Dr. Onimode Abdullahi Bandele, she stressed that preparedness is the strongest defense against disasters.

“Flooding remains one of the most recurrent and devastating natural disasters in Nigeria. Beyond the loss of lives and property, it disrupts oil production and undermines the economy. The essence of this simulation exercise is not only to test our plans and protocols but also to identify gaps and strengthen our multi-agency collaboration towards building resilient communities,” she said.

In his remarks, Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd.), represented by Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika, commended NEMA’s initiative and disclosed that the state government has begun the process of establishing a State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to institutionalize disaster preparedness and response.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and responsive to early warning alerts while calling on traditional rulers, faith leaders, civil society groups, and the media to serve as grassroots messengers of disaster awareness and mobilization.

Coordinating the exercise, NEMA’s Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Kenneth Oyong, said the operation—code-named Exercise Iji Gbaje-Ugbo—was targeted at flood-prone communities across four local government areas of Rivers State to ensure direct engagement and practical demonstration of emergency protocols.

Responding on behalf of the communities, Chairman of Ahoada West LGA, Mr. Promise Jacob, expressed gratitude to NEMA and the Rivers State Government for bringing the sensitization programme to their doorstep, pledging residents’ cooperation in flood mitigation efforts.

The simulation featured real-time demonstrations of rescue operations, evacuation drills, and inter-agency coordination, underscoring NEMA’s commitment to building resilient communities ahead of the peak flood season.

Gombe Governor Signs Bill Establishing 13 Local Council Development Areas

0

…Vows to Revolutionize Local Governance, Push Development to Underserved Communities

… Directs LGAs, LCDAs to Focus on Security, Basic Education, Primary Healthcare, Agriculture

… Gives Six-month Performance Timeline for LGAs, LCDAs to Deliver Results

… Constitutes Transition Technical Committee Under Deputy Governor

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has signed into law, the Local Council Development Areas (Creation & Administration) Bill, establishing 13 new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to complement the existing 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.

The newly created LCDAs, modeled after successful examples in parts of the country, were drawn from the state constituencies, bringing the number of local administrative units in the state from 11 to 24.

Speaking during the signing ceremony at the Government House, Governor Inuwa Yahaya said, described the development as a bold, constitutional and people-driven reform designed to correct structural imbalances, expand governance frontiers and ensure equitable service delivery across the state.

He cited Section 4 (7) and Section 5 (2b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the legal basis for the establishment of the LCDAs.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya emphasized that this landmark law fulfills the state’s responsibility under Chapter II of the Constitution to promote the security, welfare, and democratic participation of all citizens.

“Our state has one of the smallest numbers of LGAs in the country, despite our expansive landmass and rapidly growing population,” he said.“

This imbalance, he noted, has hindered development and weakened the presence of government in many rural communities, adding however, that With this law, “we are correcting that historical anomaly.”

The Governor instructed all Local Governments and LCDAs to focus their operations on four core areas: security, basic education, primary healthcare and agriculture.

He gave a six-month performance timeline for Local Government Councils and the new LCDAs to begin delivering measurable results in these sectors.

To ensure a seamless transition, the Governor announced the constitution of a high-powered Transition Technical Committee, chaired by the Deputy Governor with the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioners of Local Government and Finance, Chairman of Local Government Service Commission, ALGON Chairman and his deputy, DG Joint Projects Development Agency, State Auditor-General and the Chairman of NULGE as members. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Community Development is to serve as secretary.

He said an Executive Order will be signed in the coming days to formalize the committee’s mandate, while Interim Management Committees will also be established to oversee the LCDAs pending full operationalization and future elections.

Drawing a parallel with the creation of Gombe State in 1996, Governor Yahaya noted that structural reforms, though initially demanding, ultimately yield outcomes. He added that the Gombe State of today has outgrown its original structure, citing the evolution from a modest Gombe Division into a fast-growing subnational model.

The Governor listed the New LCDAs and Headquarters, to include: Akko North (Amada), Akko West (Pindiga), Balanga South (Bambam), Billiri West (Tal), Dukku North (Malala), Funakaye South (Tongo) and
Gombe South (Bolari).

Others are, Kaltungo East (Wange), Kwami West (Bojude), (Nafada South (Birin-Fulani), Pero-Chonge (Filiya), Yamaltu East (Dadinkowa) and
Yamaltu West ( Zambuk).

Presenting the Bill for assent, the Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Muhammad Luggerewo, stated that following the receipt of the proposal from the Executive, the House acted swiftly and diligently by subjecting it to the full rigour of legislative scrutiny.

He explained that the legislature organised public hearings and engaged with critical stakeholders across the state to gather input and consider the prayers and submissions of citizens.

Rt. Hon. Luggerewo commended Governor Inuwa Yahaya for his foresight and political will in initiating the Bill, describing the interest and solidarity shown by citizens during the public engagement process as unprecedented.

“We made several thoughtful amendments during the legislative process to enrich the Bill and ensure it is operationally sound, with the goal of deepening grassroots development,” the Speaker said.

Providing legal context, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Zubair Muhammad Umar, explained that the establishment of LCDAs is in line with the ongoing national constitutional review process, which envisions the future creation of new Local Government Areas (LGAs).

“Given the volume of community requests for LGAs and the limitations of time and constitutional constraints, the government opted for a practical solution, converting state constituencies delineated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) into LCDAs”.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, noted the significance of the event, describing it as a major milestone in the state’s commitment to grassroots governance and enhanced service delivery.

“The creation of these 13 LCDAs will expand opportunities for citizen participation, strengthen local governance structures, and promote more responsive and inclusive development”, Prof. Njodi affirmed.

PSC Receives Presidential Delegation, Demands Mandate Protection And Adequate Funding

….says it is prepared to take Government Renewed Hope to the next level

The Police Service Commission today, Monday, 25th August 2025, received a Presidential delegation led by Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination and Head, Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit.

According to a press release on Monday, August 25th 2025, signed by the PSC Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, Ms. Usman led a strong delegation on an engagement Meeting with the leadership of the Commission to identify areas of support required for effective service delivery by the Commission.

Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd) who led the Commission’s team, told the visitors that the Commission is presently faced with the twin problems of inadequate funding and unending and surreptitious attempt to hijack its mandate.

The Chairman noted that the Commission is grossly underfunded and incapable of effectively and efficiently executing its constitutional mandate of Police recruitment, promotion and discipline, adding that this anomaly is also worsened by a struggle by different and divergent interests to hijack its mandate and dilute its efficiency and effectiveness.

DIG Argungu said the Commission is committed to leverage on it’s established Policy of accountability and Transparency, to herald a Police Force ready and prepared for the 21st Century policing.

He mentioned inadequacy of staff returns from the Nigeria Police Force, institutional conflicts, limited nationwide presence, inadequate funding and public trust deficit as some of the areas of support the Commission requires from the visiting team.

According to him, “one of the key problems the Police Service Commission is facing is unnecessary interference into its Constitutional and statutory mandate” adding that the Central Result Delivery Coordination Unit should assist the Commission fence off these interlopers and ensure that the Commission is allowed to do its work.

The PSC Chairman complained on the envelope budgetary system which ” creates a ceiling in the budgeting process thereby limiting funding to the core Functions of the Commission.

DIG Argungu recommended “an independent budgeting system for the Commission that gives it the ability to submit its budget directly to the Presidency noting that ” the PSC act of 2001 Section 15(1) mandates the Commission to submit its estimate of expenditure and income during the next succeeding year, not later than 30th September in each year to the President. “

Responding, the leader of the visiting delegation, Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman pledged to work to ensure that the Commission is allowed to execute its constitutional mandate. “We will look at your mandate and will ensure you are allowed to do your work. We will de-bottleneck the problems and we will have a PSC that stands alone and not an attachment of any Ministry.

She said the objective of the working visit “is to strengthen the collaboration between the Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Ministry of Police Affairs and clarify the role of PSC in the achievement of the Presidential Area on Strenghtening National Security for peace and Prosperity”.

The PSC team at the Meeting included Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, JSC retired, Honourable Commissioner representing the Judiciary, DIG Taiwo Lakanu rtd fdc, Honourable Commissioner representing the Police and Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.

South West Youth Alliance Clarifies Existence And Role Of Police Officers’ Wives Association

The South West Youth Alliance has dismissed recent claims linking the existence of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) to the tenure of the current Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement signed by Adenike Ajanlekoko, the group stressed that POWA had been established long before Egbetokun assumed office, describing attempts to tie its creation and collection of annual dues to his administration as “misleading and mischievous.”

According to the Alliance, the association has for years championed the welfare of police officers’ families through economic empowerment programmes for widows, community development projects, and advocacy for education and healthcare access.

The group further clarified that dues collected by POWA are strictly channelled towards the welfare of police families and managed in a transparent manner consistent with the association’s objectives.

The statement also cautioned media organisations, particularly Sahara Reporters, against what it described as repeated attempts to drag the IGP’s name into “sensational and misleading narratives,” saying such actions risk undermining public confidence in credible institutions.

The South West Youth Alliance reaffirmed its support for POWA and initiatives that safeguard the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force while advancing the welfare of its officers and their families.
