NEMA Activates Flood Preparedness Along River Niger

0

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has stepped up flood preparedness measures in communities along the River Niger following alerts of rising water levels in the upstream areas of the river in the Republic of Benin.

The head of the agency’s Media and Public Relations Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja. In a directive to NEMA’s operational offices, the Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, ordered intensified advocacy and community sensitization on flood risks. She advised residents in flood-prone areas, particularly in Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara States, to remain vigilant and relocate to safer, higher grounds to avert possible disaster.

Mrs. Umar also urged State Governments in the high-risk zones to strengthen support for their State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) by activating contingency plans to mitigate the impact of potential flooding.

Reaffirming the agency’s commitment, the DG stressed that NEMA would continue to coordinate proactive actions to safeguard lives and livelihoods along the River Niger.

The joint search and rescue team has confirmed the rescue of 41 persons and the recovery of four bodies following the tragic boat mishap at Goronyo Dam in Sokoto State. The death toll rose after an additional body was recovered on Thursday, 21st August 2025. The deceased was laid to rest immediately after funeral prayers conducted in line with Islamic rites.

As part of Thursday’s operations, the response team visited Takuske, Kwakwazu, Bari, and Gamiha villages, where many victims of the accident resided. The visits enabled officials to verify the number of missing persons and commiserate with bereaved families. Authorities also confirmed that 16 people had survived the accident.

With the recovery of the last body, officials announced the conclusion of the multi-agency search and rescue operation.

The exercise was jointly conducted by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Goronyo Local Government Authority, and local divers.

The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, commended the rescue team and stakeholders for their diligence and collaboration throughout the operation.

It will be recalled that the ill-fated boat capsized on Sunday, 17th August 2025, around Kojiyo village area of the Goronyo Dam.

Labour Party Warns Against Proposed Salary Increase For Politicians

0

The Labour Party has strongly criticized the call by the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Mr. Mohammed Shehu, for a salary increase for Nigerian politicians.

In a statement signed by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Prince Tony Akeni, the party described the proposal as “unconscionable and insensitive,” especially at a time when millions of Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship.

Mr. Shehu, while addressing journalists, had claimed that the President earns N18 million annually, about N1.5 million monthly, while ministers receive N12 million per annum, or N1 million monthly. The Labour Party, however, faulted the claim, insisting that the President already lives in affluence beyond his salary, citing a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) report that dismissed such figures.

The party warned that pushing for higher salaries for politicians would only worsen Nigeria’s debt profile, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deepening corruption and mortgaging the future of unborn generations.

Instead, the LP urged the RMAFC to focus on reviewing and increasing the national minimum wage, currently pegged at N70,000, which it described as inadequate. The statement recalled that even the United States government had recently advised Nigeria to improve workers’ welfare, stressing that politicians should not be prioritized over struggling citizens.

“The fight to dismantle the structure of corruption is not Labour Party’s fight alone but that of all Nigerians,” the statement read, while calling on citizens to unite ahead of the 2027 general elections to resist what it called “the wolf packs ravaging our values and destiny as a great country.”

IGP Egbetokun Creates Two New Area Commands, Upgrades Five Police Stations In Benue

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has approved the establishment of two new Area Commands and the upgrade of five Police Stations to Divisional status in Benue State, as part of efforts to strengthen internal security architecture and enhance police visibility.

The move, according to the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, follows a comprehensive assessment of security challenges in the state, particularly in troubled Local Government Areas where additional police presence is considered crucial.

The newly created Area Commands are Daudu Area Command, which will oversee Guma, Daudu, Yelwata, and Agan Divisions; and Naka Area Command, which will supervise Naka, Apa, Agatu, and Okpokolo Divisions. In addition, the Police Stations in Ayilamo, Yelwata, Jato-Aka, Okpokolo, and Agan have been upgraded to full-fledged Divisional Headquarters.

The restructuring, the Force said, is aimed at improving response time to distress calls, ensuring quicker resolution of conflicts, and bringing policing services closer to communities in difficult terrains.

IGP Egbetokun charged the Commissioner of Police in Benue State and officers to be deployed to the new formations to demonstrate professionalism and renewed commitment in securing lives and property. He further appealed to the government and people of Benue State to continue supporting the Police, stressing that collaboration with communities remains central to sustaining peace and security.

He also directed Commissioners of Police in other states facing similar security challenges to adopt practical strategies for community-driven policing, assuring them of the necessary support and resources from Force Headquarters.

Wasiu Ayinde: The Shame Of A Nation (2)

By Tunde Odesola

Welcome, the ancient Land of Akoko beckons, where man lived in peace with nature until the day when the king, OlúfimoÀkókó, decided to let his wife into the secrets of Orò, forgetting the stern warning, “A woman is free to partake in Egúngúnfestival, she is free to partake in Gèlèdé festival, but the day she sets her eyes on Orò, she’s doomed!” Juju music legend, King Sunny Ade, amplifies this forewarning in his 1974 chart-bursting album, ‘E Kilo F’omo Ode’, crooning, “Awo egúngúnl’obirin le se, awo gèlèdé l’obirin le mo, b’obirin f’oju d’oro, oro a gbe! E kilo f’omo ode…”

Anyone who commits an unprecedented abomination, his eyes will witness an unexampled calamity, goes a Yoruba proverb captured thusly, ‘Eni ba se ohun ti enikan o se ri, oju re a ri ohunti enikan o ri ri’. Wasiu Ayinde’s ignominy at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, was not a solitary case in the history of infamy. By its sheer repulsiveness, Wasiu’s àsàkasà ranks alongside the desecration of royalty by Oba Olúfimo Àkókó, a long time ago, when the eyes were at the knees.

But let’s be clear; the eyes were never located on the knees, literally. ‘When the eyes were at the knees’ is an imagery that explains the limited view, the eyes can see if they are embedded in the knees, as opposed to how far they can see when they are socketed in the head. ‘When the eyes were at the knees’ is a Yoruba expression which means ‘when there was little awareness’.

So, the story of Olúfimo Àkókó and his clingy wife, as documented in the Ifa corpus by Orunmila, dates back to ‘time immemorial’, with ‘time immemorial’ being the white man’s equivalent of ‘when the eyes were at the knees’.

According to the story rendered to me by the one and only Awise Agbaye, Prof. Wande Abimbola, the wife of Oba Olúfimo Àkókó knelt before the throne, saying, “My lord, I wish to know how the egúngún metamorphoses in the grove.” The bewildered king screamed, “Ha! No! Never! No woman sees the robing and the derobing of the egúngún. Èwò! Abomination!”

But the queen won’t take no for an answer. “Please, my lord,” she begged, cringing on her knees and blinking tears away from her eyes. For a minute, time and air froze between the king and the queen. “Uhmm!,” the kabiyesi exhaled, tilting his head to the left in thought as his horsetail sashayed in his right hand.

“Okay, my queen. You will hide in my footstool. From there, you can watch the egúngún metamorphosis,” the king said. “Thank you, my king,” the happy queen rolled on the floor to the right and the left, in gratitude.

As planned, the ruler hid his queen in the footstool and placed his feet on it. The atmosphere was charged as different shades and sizes of egúngún sprouted in the grove and stormed out to the delight of the ‘moríwo’, egúngún adherents. The queen watched how the ‘visitors from heaven’ chanted and sang in guttural voices while performing the rites of passage from the grove to the outer world.

Paje-Polobi is an amazing egúngún in Oyo. Its chief priest, the Alagbaa, shouted, “Paje-Polobi o o o o!” The egúngún burst forth in its colourful attire, running and jumping, chasing and dancing…out of the grove. One after the other, various egúngúnemerged from the grove. Alapansanpa was resplendent, so also was Oloolu, followed by Ologbojo, a most fearsome egúngún.

No matter how long the egúngún festival lasts, the child of the Alágbáà will eventually return to eating cornmeal. So, the festival came and went. And, Akokoland looked forward to the egúngún festival next year, even as the incoming Oro festival looms around the corner.

The Akoko queen had long fancied the Oro festival. So, she went to the king and poured out her heart’s desire, cooing in soft tones the sagas that mythify Akoko in honour and glory. “Impossible!” the king boomed, “No woman sees the Oro!” The queen whimpered, “My lord, no one saw me in the grove of egúngún; how can anyone see me in the grove of Oro when I’m inside the protection of your footstool?”

“Woman, pray, this endeavour won’t kill you,” the king blurted out, “Ok, we’ll repeat the egúngún tactics.” “Thank you, my lord,” the daredevil smiled, eyed the king flirtatiously and sang his panegyrics.

The Oro deity is chauvinistic and patriarchal. On the first night of the Oro festival, spirits and gods are evoked to commune with the sons of man. In the custom of the grove, young oros engage in call-and-response chants. The first oro booms, “Ewe meje-meje ni ege ni! (Cassava has seven leaves)” But, instead of the chant reverberating in and outside the grove, it hardly left the mouth of the oro. “What is going on?” Oro disciples began to wonder. A second oro chants, “Ewe meje-meje ni…,” but the second oro couldn’t finish the chant. Clearly, something was amiss. The third Oro burst into the chant, “Ewe me…,” and stopped abruptly like a rat caught in a gum trap.

The gods are angry. The chief priest rose, looked up and down, and brought out his kola nuts for divination. He threw them on the ground. None looked up. “There’s an intruder in the grove,” he declared. Wizened with age and wisdom, the chief priest sang, “Baye ba ye won tan, iwa ibaje ni won n wu. O difa fun Olufimo Akoko ti o fi aya re mo oro, a pe ita, ita o je, a pe oro, oro o mi titi; e jeka ye inu apere oba wo, e je a ye inu apere oba wo. Translation: When they become successful, they begin to misbehave. This is the Ifa tale of Olufimo Akoko, who showed the secret of Oro to his wife; we called ‘ita’, ita didn’t respond, we called oro, oro didn’t vibrate – let’s look into the footstool of the king!)

Therefore, the footstool was flung open. The queen was brought out. A sword was unsheathed before her eyes, but she never lived to see it sheathed – ‘won ti oju e yo ida, won ti eyin e kiibo’.

Abimbola, a former vice chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, concludes in Yoruba, “Wasiu has become successful; he is now misbehaving. When you become successful, you should be careful. The plane would have cut his head off like the wife of Olufimo Akoko was beheaded. May our land not witness evil. Wasiu should be careful.”

What is in a name? Wasiu calls himself Arabambi, a name similar to Olubambi, the name of Sango, the Yoruba god of thunder and lightning, whose death was wrapped in mystery and controversy. Some say Sango committed suicide by hanging, but some say he never did. Abimbola said, “It’s a lie. Sango never committed suicide. It’s not in the Ifa corpus. The lie that he committed suicide was spun by the Anglican Mission to malign the memory of Sango. Sango’s name was not Arabambi; he was Olubambi.”

Well, Wasiu is a music icon and cultural asset to Nigeria, but may he not use his hands to undo himself, I pray. I say this prayer because a psychoanalysis of Wasiu’s actions reveals an expert in the art and science of arrogance and bootlicking. In the video of his disrespectful telephone conversation with President Tinubu, Wasiu put his left hand behind him – a sign of respect – when he talked to the President respectfully, using the pronoun ‘e’, but he put the same hand in his pocket when he talked to the President disrespectfully, using the pronoun ‘o’, like he was talking to his band boy.

In his unbashful character, Wasiu, in an old video, boasted on stage that he could stop a traveller from landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos: “Emi gangan, walahi, ti n ba ni o ni de Murtala, o le wo Murtala; eniti o mo oba lo n fi oba sere o.” Jatijati.

The conciliatory way the police, NCAA, FAAN and Keyamohandled Wasiu’s case, in contrast to the way authorities hurriedly bundled the daughter of a nobody, Emmanson, into prison, paints the picture of tigers tearing at the godfatherlessand a pride of lions caressing a bull. The Federal Government’s appointment of Ayinde as aviation security ambassador without the conclusion of the investigation amounts to an abuse of justice.

Some argue that Wasiu should not be brought to justice because he had tendered an apology. If an apology were the price for freedom for offenders, there would be no convicts in Nigerian prisons. R. Kelly and P. Diddy, by music achievements and success, are far better than Wasiu. But they are behind bars in the US today for criminal offences. If ‘I’m sorry’ could fetch them freedom, both would churn out Grammy-winning monster hits. If ‘I’m sorry’ could fetch ex-CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, freedom, the 64-year-old banker would use numbers to write “I’m sorry”. Despite saying sorry, the troublemaking singer, Portable, was arrested and made to pay fines when he beat up Ogun State environmental officials. He also corrected the building infraction he committed.

With a brand of Fuji relying more on beats than pearls of wisdom, Wasiu has endeared Fuji to the younger generation who prefer form to substance, but with his airport show of shame, he has dragged Fuji into the mud of shame.

Can Wasiu ever change? I doubt it. In his first show after the meltdown, Wasiu, in a most unrepentant manner, referenced the airport saga as ‘isele kekere’ (a minor incident), in a song in which he was begging for forgiveness. To say Wasiu cannot replicate his Abuja dishonourable display in countries such as the US, UK, Canada, etc., is far-fetched. He cannot do such in the Republic of Benin. I doubt if he could do that in Anambra, Abia, Rivers, etc. Cowards bully in their areas of influence.

One thing still beats me in all of this Fuji House of Commotion; it is the shocking realisation that some passengers on the Value Jet plane have not come together to file a class action lawsuit against Wasiu for endangering their lives. If I were on that plane, I would personally and jointly sue Wasiu, who needs to be taught a lesson.

Can Wasiu ever change? Yes, when the cock grows teeth.

Concluded.

Integrity Youth Alliance Debunks Claims Of Alleged Police Deal With Sowore

The Integrity Youth Alliance has dismissed recent reports alleging that operatives of the Nigeria Police Force attempted to broker a deal to end hostilities with activist Omoyele Sowore.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Danjuma Lamido, the group described the reports as “misleading” and insisted that no such attempt was ever made, stressing that the law must take its full course.

“It is on record that Mr. Sowore’s international passport was seized by the court, and only the court possesses the authority to release it, not the Police or any of its officers,” the statement read.

The group also refuted claims that Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede had promised to arrange a meeting between Sowore and the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to finalize a so-called peace deal. It described the allegation as baseless and aimed at misleading the public.

According to the Alliance, IGP Egbetokun is currently focused on improving the welfare of police personnel, implementing reforms, and handling critical national security responsibilities, noting that he cannot be distracted by “individuals like Sowore whose activities add no value to the Nigeria Police Force or its mandate.”

The group urged Nigerians to disregard the claims, which it said were being circulated to misinform the public, while reaffirming its support for the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, on Thursday, 21st August 2025, inspected newly installed intelligence infrastructure at Idu Community in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen intelligence-led policing in Nigeria.

The inspection, which forms part of the Force’s strategic engagement with indigenous security experts, was conducted in partnership with EIB STRATOC, a homegrown security solutions provider. The collaboration, according to the Police, is aimed at deepening cooperation in enhancing Nigeria’s overall security architecture.

Stop Playing God, APC Chieftain, Eze Cautions Wike

0

….Says Amaechi’s Political Destiny Lies In God’s Hands
….Counsels Wike to concentrate on how to address the alleged N435bn loot under his watch and leave Amaechi to strategize on how rescue Nigeria out of her present messy situation under Tinubu

“….For Wike to ceaselessly continue to mention about funds duly accounted for in the Budget of 2014 of Rivers State is hypocritical and idiotic, Eze said….”

Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, erstwhile National Publicity Secretary of the New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), and a former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Media Projects Legacy Team, on Thursday, admonished the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike to stop playing God, lest he incurs eternal damnation.
Eze was reacting to a recent statement credited to Minister Wike, wherein he emphatically said that the former Minister of Transportation, Barr. Rotimi Amaechi will not get the ADC Presidential ticket in 2027.

Also, Wike was reported to have stated that Amaechi’s presidential ambition was dead on arrival.

“Ordinarily, I wouldn’t have responded to Wike, as I likened his outburst as a ranting of an atheist, who glorifies evil deeds.

“I am constrained to ask Wike, when he has become God that he now determines or decides the destiny or fate of any human being?

“Honestly, my brother, you are taking your luck too far, and I caution you to soft pedal on your utterances, as if you are omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent God” Eze told Wike.

Eze said he is not surprised at the rate and manner in which Wike drops Amaechi’s name, saying he feels threatened at the mention of Amaechi’s name in Rivers State and Nigeria’s political circle.

“Truthfully, I have not been taken aback anytime Wike attempts to cast aspersion on the person of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

“It is axiomatic in Igbo parlance that when you ask a child to mention a man’s name, he mentions his mother’s man friend. So, Wike is obsessed with anything Amaechi, Eze stated.

In a statement, the APC Chieftain blasted Wike for assuming the role of God because President Bola Tinubu afforded him a rare opportunity to serve in his administration.

According to Eze, the FCT Minister has no locus standi to meddle into the internal affairs of ADC, talkless of determining who gets what in the party ahead the 2027 presidential election.

“Is Wike a key member of ADC to decide on who flies her presidential flag come 2027?

As a response to this simple question; “Certainly, the answer is in the negative. Wike is nether God nor a member of ADC to determine or decide the fate of Amaechi or any other politician in the party come 2027” Eze posited.

However, the former nPDP spokesperson reminded Wike that it is only God who has continued to determine the fate of Amaechi politically, that will determine his fate come 2027.

Nevertheless, Eze submitted that besides the role of God in the affairs of the former Rivers State governor, “the delegates of ADC will determine the fate of Amaechi in flying the flag of ADC presidential ticket or any other person and not a person of no value like Wike”.

“The fact is that Wike is suffering from a mental disorder often referred in medical term as Amaechcanism.

“This is a state of political mind of anybody who has once benefitted from Amaechi’s benevolence but still wants his downfall in any way possible.

“Another set of people that suffer from Amaechcanism are those that have phobia like Wike for the resurgence of Amaechi politically, due to his likely role in determining the fate of Nigeria come 2027” Eze explained.

Latching out on Wike as a sad, confused and demented betrayer, the APC chieftain urged Nigerians to have pity on the FCT Minister for not knowing the party he belongs to and his unfortunate situation come 2027.

“All the sins and atrocities Wike has committed against the Nigerian state and her people in the name of politics, will in no distant time, catch up with him and his family.

“Jealousy is a terrible and an incurable sin; a habitual trait that will consume Wike and all those who wish Amaechi evil, Eze declared.

In the same vein, for Wike to allege that Amaechi can’t end corruption in Nigeria, goes to show his deep rooted penchant for corruption, and lack of respect for the judiciary.

According to Eze, Amaechi’s record both as Governor and Minister are there in public purview, stressing that for one drunk to accuse him of what he is not doesn’t make any sense.

Of a fact, Eze noted that ending corruption in Nigeria may not be easy but insisted that Amaechi can’t promise what he can’t fulfill.

“With how he managed the resources of Rivers State and curtailed all forms of corruption, I am convinced that if Nigerians vote him in, he has what it takes to end corruption in Nigeria.

“It is a matter of not appointing very corruptive people like Wike into his Cabinet and setting up relevant agencies to curb corruption, and by the time we know what is happening, Nigeria will be freed from this evil machine that has distorted our development and emancipation as a nation” Eze said.

On the allegation that Amaechi sold all the gas turbines in Rivers state and pocketed the money etc

Eze posited that the issue of sale of the gas turbines, which was duly captured in the 2014 Budget of Rivers State, duly passed by the Rivers State Assembly, Eze said Wike is being petty.

“By once again highlighting this issue repeatedly in his dreams since 2015, Wike is only exhibiting his ignorance and face shameless value.

“Amaechi and his Media Aides have severally thrown light on this particular issue, so bringing it at any opportunity given to him, makes Wike, a chronic liar and serial blackmailer, because he is fully aware that the proceeds from the sale of the gas turbines were duly captured in the State’s 2014 budget, Eze stated.

Eze, therefore reminded Wike that further facts about how Amaechi used and worked on the finances of Rivers State can be extracted from his article all over the internet titled, “EZE EXPLAINS HOW AMAECHI USED THE RESOURCES OF RIVERS STATE”.

*For Wike to ceaselessly continue to mention about funds duly accounted for in the Budget of 2014 of Rivers State is hypocritical and idiotic, Eze said.

While throwing more light on the hypocrisy of Wike, Eze said it is fair and equitable for Nyesom Wike to frustrate EFCC from probing his government over alleged N435bn loot because he is serving the Tinubu administration.
