NCC Mobilises Stakeholders To Safeguard Telecom Infrastructure, Averts Potential Nationwide Service Disruption

0

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has restated its commitment to fully implementing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Executive Order on Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII), which classifies telecommunications facilities as critical national assets requiring optimal protection.

According to a press release on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, signed by the NCC Head, Public Affairs, Nnenna Ukoha, this follows the suspension of a planned strike by the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) after successful mediation by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in collaboration with the NCC. The strike, if executed, would have disrupted diesel supply to telecom sites nationwide, crippling operators’ ability to power generators and maintain uninterrupted connectivity.

In the days preceding the resolution, the NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, held strategic talks with NOGASA leadership, with the NCC providing technical and regulatory guidance on the potential impact of service disruptions on national security, the economy, and daily life. The engagement resulted in an agreement to call off the industrial action, preventing what could have been a nationwide communications blackout.

“Telecommunications infrastructure is the backbone of our connectivity and digital economy. Any disruption—whether from vandalism, accidental damage, theft, denial of access to maintenance teams, or supply interruptions—has far-reaching implications for service delivery, economic stability, and national security,” Ribadu said.

NCC Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Aminu Maida, commended ONSA’s leadership and praised stakeholders’ maturity in recognising the national importance of telecom services. He affirmed that the Commission would continue enforcing technical compliance by licensees, strengthening cooperation among stakeholders, and promoting public awareness on infrastructure protection.

“This resolution underscores the importance of dialogue in preventing avoidable service disruptions,” Maida said, urging Nigerians to view telecom facilities as shared national assets essential for communication, business, healthcare, education, and participation in the digital economy.

The Commission pledged continued coordination with security agencies, industry stakeholders, and the public to ensure Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure remains protected, resilient, and reliable.

The Bandage With No Wound

…A closer look at the gap between Sowore’s public claims and verifiable facts, and what it reveals about trust, manipulation, and public opinion.

In the age of viral clips and hashtag outrage, it does not take much for a well-staged scene to whip up public sentiment. Unfortunately, the recent detention of Omoyele Sowore by the Nigeria Police Force Monitoring Unit at Force Headquarters, Abuja, on August 6th of August, 2025, is a case study in how carefully crafted theatrics can mislead the public, tarnish institutions, and weaponize sympathy.

The detention, which arose from a petition alleging cyberstalking, defamation, and related offenses, quickly became a social media circus. At the heart of this drama was an image that surfaced online of Sowore with a heavily bandaged right hand. This image instantly became the rallying point for his supporters, who spun it as irrefutable evidence of police brutality. Outrage followed, with many lambasting the police even before verifying the facts.

Yet, while in detention, Sowore himself revealed in videos that he had refused medical treatment offered by the police, not because it was unavailable, but simply because it was a nurse, and not a doctor, who attended to him. This excuse is not only laughable but also insulting to the intelligence of Nigerians. Nurses are trained medical professionals who, in emergencies, are often the first point of treatment worldwide. In fact, contrary to his claims, the Police clarified in an official statement that the medical team was led by the Force Medical Officer – a senior professional equivalent to a Director, whose services he flatly refused. For someone who claimed to be “writhing in pain,” rejecting qualified medical care on such flimsy grounds makes little sense, unless there was actually no injuries.

The farce did not end there. Upon his release, another video emerged showing Sowore operating his mobile phone at the entrance of the IRT (Intelligence Response Team), with the same “injured hand” until someone reminded him of his supposed broken bone, prompting a sudden change in demeanor. The act was so thinly veiled that it could only fool those already predisposed to believe anything he says. And just yesterday, more videos surfaced showing him freely throwing the same hand about, without any bandages at all, at the entrance of the NYSC office in Maitama.

From a medical standpoint, the inconsistencies are glaring. According to orthopedic guidelines such as those of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a simple wrist fracture in a healthy adult typically takes a minimum of six to eight weeks to heal, and that is with proper immobilization, follow-up care, and adherence to medical instructions. In adults over 50, like Sowore, healing time is often longer due to age-related bone density reduction. That means if he truly had a fracture from August 6, the idea that he would be tossing his hand about without protection within days is medically implausible.

Even more curious is his selective outrage. This is the same man who, during the July 21 protest, made much noise about his missing eyeglasses, a non-life-threatening inconvenience, yet he now appears oddly eager to move on from what he earlier insinuated was torture by the police. Given his long history of antagonism toward the Force, does anyone believe that if Sowore truly sustained a broken bone from police brutality, he would not have unleashed a barrage of lawsuits and international media campaigns by now?

What we are left with is a troubling pattern. Here is a man adept at exploiting trust, spinning half-truths, and staging narratives to rile up hatred against the police and manipulate public sentiment. Sowore thrives in the chaos he creates, and in an era where misinformation spreads faster than fact, such calculated deception is dangerous.

Trust is a fragile thing. In politics and activism, it should be earned through consistency, honesty, and evidence-based advocacy, not through theatrics and manipulation. Nigerians must be wary of those who treat their sympathies as pawns in a personal chess game. A society that allows itself to be swayed by the loudest victim-claimant without demanding proof risks making enemies of the wrong people and empowering those who prey on public goodwill.

Sowore’s recent antics should serve as a wake-up call. Not every cry of oppression is rooted in truth, and not every bandage hides a wound.

In his vote of thanks, Managing Director, Portland Gas Ltd, Hon. Folajimi Mohammed, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for all the support granted to his company. He particularly expressed satisfaction with the NASENI’s initiatives and determination in the partnership, believing that with CNG, Nigerians will spend less on transportation and other needs.

My Administration Won’t Abandon Any Project – Gov Diri

0

….. Fulfils Car Promise to Police Officer Who Rejected $17,000 Bribe

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to completing all ongoing projects before the end of his tenure in February 2028.

Speaking on Wednesday during the 169th State Executive Council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa, Diri pledged that both legacy projects initiated by his administration and those inherited from previous governments would be completed.

According to a press release on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, Key projects include the completed Sagbama–Ekeremor Road, which his administration inherited and extended towards Agge; the Yenagoa–Oporoma–Ukubie Road; and phase one of the Nembe–Brass Road. Others are the nine-storey Civil Servants’ Secretariat, a 25,000-capacity stadium, and a 60-megawatt gas turbine plant, among other infrastructure developments.

He assured that funding would not be a challenge, adding that his goal is to make all eight local government headquarters accessible by road.

On the Bayelsa West senatorial road between Ekeremor and Agge, the governor disclosed that contractors, China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation (CCECC), were currently undertaking sand-filling, while work on the Bayelsa Central to Oporoma and Nembe–Brass roads was nearing completion. He further revealed that the Federal Government had released 30 per cent of the contract sum for the second phase of the Nembe–Brass Road.

Diri also announced that the new gas turbines procured by his administration would deliver 24-hour electricity to Bayelsans before the year’s end, noting that reliable power supply remained central to his industrialisation agenda.

Nigeria Police Female Officers Condemn Targeted Attacks On Promoted Colleagues

….. Seek Retraction of Malicious Publications

Female officers of the Nigeria Police Force have expressed outrage over what they described as targeted and unwarranted attacks against women in the force who were recently promoted by the Police Service Commission (PSC), following the recommendation of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, 13th August 2025, and signed by the Force Gender Advisor to the IGP, AIG Aishatu Abubakar Baju, the officers condemned recent comments by activist Omoyele Sowore and his associates, which they said singled out female officers for criticism while ignoring their male counterparts promoted under the same process.

The statement noted that promotions in the Nigeria Police Force are based strictly on merit, either through years of exemplary service or exceptional performance, and that women who meet the criteria deserve recognition and career progression on equal terms with men.

“It is disturbing that these insinuations question the credibility of female officers’ promotions, suggesting gender bias, which is both unfounded and rooted in misogyny,” the statement read. “Such remarks undermine the sacrifices, professionalism, and hard work of women in uniform who risk their lives daily in service to the nation.”

The female officers called for an immediate retraction of the alleged derogatory statements and a formal public apology, insisting that no amount of intimidation or smear campaigns would deter them from carrying out their duties with professionalism, integrity, and dedication to national security.

PAP Not Created To Serve Itsekiri Traditional Institution – Niger Delta Group Tells Olu Of Warri

0

A socio-cultural organisation in Niger Delta region, Izon Cultural Heritage Centre (ICHC), has cautioned against attempts to use Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) for ethnic bargaining chip for palace politics.

The group insisted that the PAP is a Niger Delta-wide peace instrument and development and security.

The group stressed that the programme was never designed to serve the Itsekiri traditional institution or any other traditional ruler in the Niger Delta.

In a statement signed by its leader, Apostle Bodmas Kemepadei, the group expressed concern over a misleading publication by one Shola Mese, whom it described to be a palace proxy, suggesting that the PAP under saying Dr. Dennis Otuaro was biased against the Itsekiri.

The group cautioned the Olu of Warri and his aides to refrain from making statements that could distort the programme’s objectives in the region.

Kemepadei noted that the Amnesty Programme was not created to serve the Itsekiri Traditional Rulers Council, nor is it an appendage of the Olu of Warri to be remotely controlled through his appointed representative.

The ICHC therefore, reiterated its full confidence in the leadership of Dr. Dennis Otuaro, who, it said, since assuming office, has worked with diligence, inclusivity, and commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the organisation, Otuaro’s track record of engaging stakeholders across ethnic divides, and ensuring fairness in programme delivery, stands as a testament to his capability and dedication to the beneficiaries.

He explained that PAP was designed to address the needs of its documented 30,000 beneficiaries; delegates drawn from across the Niger Delta region, without ethnic or sectional bias.

“It is therefore inappropriate and unhelpful for any traditional authority through proxies like Dr. Mese to attempt to impose influence or create the perception that the PAP is subject to their directives.

“The programme does not answer to the Itsekiri Palace, and its operational focus remains firmly on the empowerment, reintegration, and welfare of its registered beneficiaries across all Niger Delta communities.

“We caution the Olu of Itsekiri and his proxies to refrain from actions or statements that could fan the embers of discord or present a distorted narrative about the PAP’s operations.

“Such a path, if replicated by other traditional rulers, risks undermining the fragile peace and stability of the region; peace which is essential for governance, development, and even the effective administration of traditional domains.

“We therefore urge His Majesty to respect the sanctity of his office and exercise the moral restraint befitting the honour and responsibility that comes with the revered Itsekiri throne”, the statement said.

The Izon Cultural Heritage Centre explained that the era of disarmament under the PAP has long passed, and the Itsekiri people:like every other ethnic nationality, must acknowledge that fact.

“The current phase is reintegration for already documented beneficiaries, not an avenue to reopen old disarmament claims or alter established beneficiary lists…

“In addition, the ICHC vehemently strongly condemns the recent remarks by Dr. Shola Mese, who has attempted to mislead the public by suggesting that the PAP under Dr. Dennis Otuaro is skewed against the Itsekiri people.

“Such claims are not only false but are calculated to stir unnecessary ethnic tension. While Dr. Mese claims to have been involved in the disarmament phase years ago, that era is over.

“The PAP is now in its reintegration phase, which operates strictly on the basis of the existing list of beneficiaries, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Urhobo, Isoko, and others alike without room for ethnic favoritism, blackmail or political manipulation.

“We remind Dr. Mese that his appointment as Sole Itsekiri Representative to the PAP Office in 2024, courtesy of the Olu of itsekiris recommendation, does not confer authority to dictate programme policy or undermine the Administrator, the PAP can never answer to the palace”, they said.

Drug War: Why President Tinubu ‘ll Continue To Strengthen NDLEA – NSA Ribadu, AGF Fagbemi

…… Commend Marwa’s leadership as Agency empowers strategic commands, formations with 48 new vehicles

……. It’s a milestone made possible by the President’s strategic support, says Marwa

The National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has said that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will continue to strengthen the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) because of its strategic value to the success of the country’s national security architecture.

According to a press release on Wednesday 13th August 2025 signed by the NDLEA Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the NSA stated this in his remarks at the commissioning of 46 new vehicles distributed to strategic commands and formations of NDLEA on Wednesday 13th August 2025 at the Agency’s national headquarters in Abuja where he also commended the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) and his team for their sustained commitment, discipline and energy in transforming the NDLEA into a result-oriented force against one of the most destabilising threats to Nigeria’s national well-being: illicit drugs.

In his words, “I commend the Chairman, General Mohamed Buba Marwa, for his discipline, commitment, and transformative leadership. Under his watch, NDLEA has become a result-oriented force addressing the grave threats posed by illicit drugs that undermine our national security, social stability, and public health.

“This event is not just about commissioning vehicles, without the mobility to swiftly reach danger points, intercept traffickers and move resources where they are most needed, our fight is severely constrained. The link between drug trafficking and insecurity is systemic. Criminal gangs thrive on drug profits, Insurgents and armed groups fund their activities with it. Countless young Nigerians fall victim to addiction, with devastating consequences for families and communities.

“This is why the renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu prioritizes drug control as a pillar of our national security strategy. The President’s unwavering support through funding, inter-agency cooperation, and policy alignment has directly enabled today’s milestone.

“These vehicles will be deployed nationwide to amplify NDLEA’s operational presence, strengthen deterrence, and ensure that no trafficker escapes justice. As the lead agency for drug control, arrest, seizure, and investigation and prosecution, NDLEA will continue to receive the full backing of the Office of National Security Adviser, which will also coordinate its efforts with other security and regulatory agencies, including the National Police Force, Nigerian Customs Service, NAFDAC.

He challenged NDLEA officers to view the commissioning as a call to action: to do more, remain vigilant, act within the law and uphold the highest standards of professionalism. ““The NDLEA is not only building lives, but also restoring dignity and shaping national policy. In light of the pandemic, this commissioning is a call to action. Use these resources responsibly, act within the law, and remain vigilant.”

In his welcome address, the Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA said the event is symbolic of the continuous effort to reposition the Agency as a modern, efficient and respected organization as well as a reflection of the sustained commitment of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to equipping institutions that stand on the front line of the country’s national security and public health.
“To that extent, today’s event is a milestone, as NDLEA is now counted among a distinguished group of security and drug law enforcement agencies around the world that are not only visible in their operations but equally respected and making impacts”, Marwa noted.

He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his unwavering and strategic support for the Agency. “The procurement of these vehicles was made possible by the fiscal backing of this administration, which continues to demonstrate strong resolve in addressing the root causes of insecurity and social dislocation. Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the President has prioritised national stability, institutional reform and the safety of every Nigerian life. That trust motivates us to deliver even more”, he stated.

While explaining the importance of the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking to national security, Marwa said “We know from both intelligence and experience that drug abuse and trafficking are central to many security challenges in the country. The link is undeniable: kidnapping, armed robbery, insurgency and cult violence are all fuelled by illicit substances. Drug trafficking emboldens perpetrators, strips away moral restraint and replaces hope with recklessness. No serious approach to national security can ignore drug control, and this is why we pursue our mandate with focus, determination and the results are there to show.”

He noted that in just two years of President Tinubu’s administration, the NDLEA has achieved significant results.

“We have arrested 40,887 drug offenders, including 45 drug barons leading to the seizure of over 5.5 million kilograms of assorted illicit substances, all recovered from our streets, communities, warehouses, border routes and ports nationwide, with 704.445 hectares of cannabis farms, hidden deep in forests, destroyed. We have equally secured the conviction of 8,682 traffickers and kingpins alike, ensured their assets forfeitures to the Federal Government through the court process, thus sending a clear message that drug crimes attract legal consequences.

“Equally important is the fact that 24,173 drug users have been treated and rehabilitated in our 30 rehab centres located across the country while 8,698 War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation activities aimed at preventing people from going into substance abuse were carried out in schools, worship centres, work places, motor parks, and communities among others within the same period. These clearly created a fair balance between our drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts.”

He said the achievements of the past two years reflect both the resilience of the Agency’s personnel and its growing capacity. While noting that the fight against illicit drugs is far from over, the NDLEA boss said the “illicit drug economy continues to evolve, exploiting vulnerable youths, porous borders and sometimes complicit actors. To remain effective, our response must also evolve – with sharper intelligence, stronger community engagement and, critically, improved mobility and logistics.”

In his remarks, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN commended President Tinubu for making the achievements recorded by the leadership of Marwa at the NDLEA in the past two years possible. According to him, “Without an understanding President, it would be very difficult to have this type of gathering today. So, my first appreciation goes to him. There is a very, very close nexus between drug trafficking and all the crimes that we have.

“The Chairman has chronicled some of the effects of these illicit drugs. They embolden criminals. And when the thing wears off, then you discover that they are just ordinary mortals like you and I. And that is why attention ought to be given to this fight against illicit drugs. And when I follow NDLEA activities; the arrests, the fights they put on, you know, I’m always very happy. The credit, of course, goes to the leadership by Gen Marwa.

This is not your first time of doing this. You have done it elsewhere and you are doing it again. I’m always very pleased.

“And you know, of course, my position when it comes to NDLEA, whenever we are asked to showcase our report card, I’m very quick to say put NDLEA first. This is what you have done. So, I’m happy about what you are doing. And the morale of the staff you are boosting is very important. If there is no morale booster, you can’t get anything done.”

Also speaking, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa said “the NDLEA has consistently demonstrated courage, professionalism and resilience in confronting the threats posed by drugs and substance abuse in very challenging circumstances. The procurement of these operational vehicles is therefore a significant boost to the Agency’s operational response capability and overall effectiveness in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse. It is my firm belief that this investment will translate to greater deterrent to those who seek to profit from this destructive trade.”

In his goodwill message at the occasion, the Director General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun congratulated President Tinubu for putting the likes of Marwa in positions of leadership in various agencies. He said the event is a testament to Marwa’s leadership style and belief in Nigeria.

“Today marks a remarkable event in our lives. BPP is a worthy partner of NDLEA. The vehicles you see today were thoroughly done through due process. In fact, I am going to say NDLEA, for me, is an example for other agencies of government. So, I congratulate the entire management of NDLEA for leading the way. We can testify to you that these vehicles have gone through standardizations and they are meant for fit, for purpose.

A total of 38 SUVs were distributed to Zonal Commands, Strategic Commands and State Commands across the country while 10 sedan cars were given to 10 directorates.
No fewer than 15 newly promoted Commanders of Narcotics (CN) were decorated with their new rank of Assistant Commander General of Narcotics (ACGN) by the NDLEA boss at the end of the ceremony.
