IGP Egbetokun To Decorate Promoted National Award Recipients As PSC Approves Accelerated Promotions

The Nigeria Police is set to honour distinguished service and professionalism as the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, prepares to decorate recently promoted officers in a ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 12 noon, at the IGP Smart Conference Room, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

According to a press release on Monday, 4th August 2025, signed by Force Public Relations Officer DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the promotions follow the approval of the Police Service Commission (PSC), fulfilling a commitment made by the Force in Press Release No. CZ:5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.6/472 dated July 25, 2025, which promised the accelerated elevation of officers who have received consecutive national police awards or IGP commendations. The move is in line with a resolution of the Force Management Team reached at its meeting on June 23, 2025, reflecting the IGP’s reform agenda focused on merit, professionalism, and institutional pride.

Prominent among those to be decorated are

CSP Shaba Aliyu, named Police Officer of the Year 2023, was promoted to Assistant Commissioner of Police, effective December 31, 2023.

SP Sentome Obi, Police Officer of the Year 2024, was promoted to Chief Superintendent of Police, effective December 31, 2024.

Both officers are recognised for their exceptional service, courage, and integrity. They will be flown into Abuja aboard the police jet for the event. Their portraits have also been mounted at the main entrance of the Force Headquarters in Abuja and across all Zonal and State Command Headquarters, in line with earlier directives from the IGP.

Other beneficiaries of this promotion exercise include officers who have received national or internal commendations in at least two recent award cycles, including personnel at the IGP’s Secretariat.

Describing the gesture as a “public endorsement of excellence,” the Force Headquarters reiterated its commitment to rewarding hard work and inspiring a culture of service anchored on merit.

“This is what institutional pride looks like. This is how trust is built, from within,” the IGP stated.

In a nationwide message to all personnel, the Force assured officers that their sacrifices and integrity are not going unnoticed.

“The job is not thankless. The Nigeria Police Force, under the current leadership, is committed to ensuring that professionalism is not just praised but promoted,” the statement concluded.

A medical practitioner, Samuel Adebola, won the star prize of one million Naira at the fifth edition of the Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship held at the weekend in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

The Ogun State-based doctor clinched the coveted trophy in the Masters category, beating stiff competition from a cast of top scrabble players from across the country.

More than 200 players participated in the tournament, which had a total prize money of over N10 million in five categories.

Adebola had a cumulative spread of +856 beating contenders Abdulmumin Jimoh and Chuks Nwaeze, who finished second and third with +672 and +354 respectively. He played bingos such as ‘Volubly’, ‘Claviger’ and ‘Averment’ to cart home the prestigious prize and a giant trophy.

In the Veterans category, Dokun Esan with a spread of +1180 came tops, with Edowor Bobor winning the Intermediate category with +710, while Dorcas Innocent won the Opens with +1046, and Pereowei Edidie of Federal Government College, Odi, Bayelsa State, took the trophy in the Students category with +2060.

President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, Engr. Olobatoke Aka, thanked the Bayelsa State government for sponsoring the competition in the last five years.

Aka appealed for increased funding and prize money while expressing the hope that the tournament would prepare Nigerian players to excel at this month’s African Youth Championship in Kenya, the World Youth Championship in Malaysia in October and the World Scrabble Championship in Ghana in November.

Chairman of the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association (BSSA), Mr. Daniel Alabrah, also appreciated Governor Diri for sponsoring the championship annually.

He said the tournament has continued to grow with increased funding and prizes, urging corporate organisations to support the game.

Alabrah noted that apart from the increased prize money, the fifth edition was significant as it was live-streamed globally as the event was on in Yenagoa.

“The Governor Diri Scrabble Championship was the focus for scrabble players across the world as it was going on in the Bayelsa capital. We succeeded in introducing technology to positively showcase Bayelsa and the governor’s contribution to human capacity development,” Alabrah stated.

Declaring the tournament closed, Governor Diri, represented by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali, pledged continued support for the game of scrabble.

He said his administration was committed to holistic sports development and would continue to encourage youths in the state to embrace sports to actualise their potential.

Female winners and players also received special prizes as well as a special presentation by the BSSA chairman of the sum of N200,000 to each of the two scrabble gold medallists at the recent National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

MRA Calls On Niger Governor Bago To Immediately Reopen Badegi Radio

0

Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has condemned the closure of Badegi 90.1 FM, a private radio station based in Minna, Niger State, on August 1, 2025, on the orders of the Governor, Mr. Mohammed Umaru Bago, describing the action as illegal, arbitrary and a dangerous assault on broadcasting freedom. It called on the Governor to immediately and unconditionally reopen the station and issue a public apology for the closure.

Governor Bago reportedly ordered the State Commissioner of Police to seal off the station for alleged incitement of violence and directed that the license of the radio station be revoked, according to a statement by Mr. Bologi Ibrahim, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.

Mr. Ibrahim claimed in the statement that the “daily activities of the radio station have been unethical”, adding that “Governor Bago also accused the owner of the station of incitement of the people against the government.”

Describing the Government’s action as undemocratic, illegal and unjustifiable, Mr. John Gbadamosi, MRA’s Programme Officer, noted in a statement issued in Lagos that criticism of the government is not crime as it is integral to any functioning democracy, in addition to the fact that it is a constitutional right and duty imposed on the media by Section 22 of the Constitution.

In any event, he argued, the Governor lacks any constitutional or statutory authority to order the closure of any broadcast station in Nigeria or the revocation of the broadcasting license of any broadcast media organization.

Mr. Gbadamosi said: “The Governor’s action amounts to an abuse of his office and a clear breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers under the 1999 Constitution, as amended, particularly Paragraph 9 of the Code. Should the Governor fail to immediately and unconditionally reverse his directives, we will take appropriate action to ensure that he is held accountable for this egregious violation of the constitutional right to freedom of expression and the corollary rights of the people in the State to receive ideas and information.”

Citing the provisions of Paragraph 9 of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers, which states that “A public officer shall not do or direct to be done, in abuse of his office, any arbitrary act prejudicial to the rights of any other person knowing that such act is unlawful or contrary to any government policy”, he noted that there is no doubt that the Governor’s actions amount to a violation of the Code as he has no authority to order the shutting down of the station or the revocation of its license.

According to him, Governor Bago knows or ought to know that he has no power to shut down any radio station or to direct the revocation of its license, as the regulation of broadcasting in Nigeria is not under his control or authority. He added that by nonetheless purporting to exercise powers and authority which he does not have, in violation of the rights of the owners and staff of the radio station as well as the access to information rights all the residents of the State who receive news and information from the station, the Governor has abused his powers, violated his oath of office and breached the Code of Conduct for Public Officers.

Mr. Gbadamosi stated that although it is clear from the action of the Governor that he wants to have in the State only media outlets that will sing his praises, he has to curtail such desires and be prepared to tolerate criticisms and negative reporting from the media since the same Constitution under which he derives his powers and authority, which he is now misusing, has also given the media the duty and freedom to “uphold the responsibility and accountability of the Government to the people.”

He said: “Governor Bago his advised to concentrate is attention and efforts on performing his functions and carrying out the responsibilities of his office in accordance with the Constitution, which states that the primary purpose of government is to ensure the security and welfare of the people, and allow the media to similarly perform the functions imposed on them by the Constitution, the most important of which are reminding the government of its responsibilities to the people and holding the government accountable to the people.”

Mr. Gbadamosi urged the NBC to assert its independence in the matter by acting decisively against any attempt to illegally usurp its authority while also upholding the independence of broadcast media under its regulatory purview.

He called on Governor Bago to immediately and unconditionally reopen Badegi 90.1 FM and issue a public apology to the proprietors, management, staff, and listeners of the station for the arbitrary and unlawful violation of their rights and also give a public undertaking to respect the independence and freedom of the media to operate without such arbitrary interference or political intimidation.

N712bn Lagos Airport Renovation: Labour Party Accuses APC Of Misplaced Priorities, Calls Project “Wicked, Elitist”

0

The Labour Party has condemned the Federal Government’s decision to commit ₦712 billion ($475 million) to the renovation of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, describing the move as “outrageous, elitist, and morally bankrupt.”

In a statement issued on Monday by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, the party accused the APC-led government of “robbing the poor to spoil the rich,” especially in the wake of the hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy.

“It is deeply troubling that the APC-led administration is prioritising such an extravagant airport renovation at a time when 63% of Nigerians — approximately 133 million citizens — are classified as multidimensionally poor,” the statement reads.

The party also took aim at the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, who recently disclosed that the ₦712 billion would be drawn from the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund — a pool sourced from savings made since the controversial fuel subsidy removal.

“To withdraw this lifeline from the poor only to channel the proceeds into a luxury terminal accessible exclusively to the rich is a new low in governmental wickedness,” Asogwa stated.

The Labour Party questioned why the Federal Government did not consider a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for the project, noting that airport terminals are typically revenue-generating ventures globally.

“Why not invite private capital, especially when the return on investment is self-sustaining, instead of squandering subsidy savings on an elitist project that benefits a fraction of the population?” the statement queried.

It further argued that most Nigerians, who no longer enjoy basic services such as affordable transportation, healthcare, or food, do not even travel by air, making the scale of the investment both insensitive and imprudent.

The statement also linked the Lagos Airport renovation to what it described as a broader pattern of “fiscal recklessness” by the APC administration, citing the controversial ₦15 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project as another example of misplaced national priorities.

Comparative findings, according to the Labour Party, show that countries across Africa, Asia, and Europe have delivered brand-new airports at lower costs than the proposed renovation.

“This is not just wicked; it is satanic and speaks to a gross disregard for the plight of the masses,” the statement concluded.

The party called on Nigerians to rise in defense of national accountability and reject what it described as an unjust use of public funds.

IGP Egbetokun Never Accused Mike Okiro Of Usurping His Functions – SWYA Faults The Supreme News Over False Report

The South West Youth Alliance (SWYA) has strongly refuted a recent report by The Supreme News, which claimed that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, accused former IGP Mike Okiro of usurping his official functions.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its National Publicity Director, Adenike Ajanlekoko, SWYA described the report as “misleading, false, and reckless,” asserting that the IGP never made such an accusation.

“At no time did IGP Egbetokun make such an accusation against the respected elder statesman and former police chief,” the statement read. “The report is not only baseless but also appears to be a calculated attempt to create disunity within the Nigeria Police Force and mislead the general public.”

The group urged Nigerians and media organisations to disregard the publication in its entirety, stressing that it lacked substance, verification, and credibility.

SWYA further warned that such “irresponsible journalism” undermines national institutions and disrespects the legacies of past leaders who have played critical roles in strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.

While expressing solidarity with the leadership of the police, the group commended IGP Egbetokun for maintaining composure and professionalism in the face of what it described as “unwarranted distractions.”

“We commend IGP Egbetokun for his calm and focused leadership, which continues to promote professionalism, integrity, and meaningful reform within the Force,” the statement added.

SWYA also called on The Supreme News to retract the report and issue a public apology to both the incumbent and former IGPs in the interest of truth, accountability, and responsible journalism.

The group reaffirmed its support for the Nigeria Police Force in its ongoing efforts to uphold law, order, and public trust across the country.

D’Tigress’ Afrobasket Triumph: Labour Party Hails Historic Fifth Consecutive Title, Calls For Greater Investment In Youth And Sports

0

The Labour Party has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship. D’Tigress clinched the title after a commanding win over Mali in Sunday’s final, held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

With this remarkable feat, Nigeria has become the first country in history to win five consecutive Women’s Afrobasket titles, further cementing its status as the dominant force in African women’s basketball.

Reacting to the victory, Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi E. Usman, described the win as a “resounding triumph” that has once again brought immense pride and honour to the nation. She noted that beyond the glory on the court, the achievement offers a timely reminder of the boundless potential of Nigerian youth.

“As we continue to bask in the euphoria of this sweet and inspiring victory,” she stated, “I urge those in positions of authority to make deliberate and robust investments in our youth, particularly through sports and other engaging, talent-driven activities that can redirect youthful energy from the streets to productive ventures.”

Senator Usman emphasised the economic value of sports globally, calling it a multibillion-dollar industry with the potential to significantly boost national economies. She lamented the impact of poor leadership and shortsighted policies that have hindered meaningful investments in Nigeria’s talent-rich youth sectors, including sports, entertainment, ICT, and music.

“This latest triumph by D’Tigress presents yet another opportunity for the government to reflect and reimagine a future where our sports sector receives the attention and funding it truly deserves,” she added.

On behalf of the Labour Party family, Senator Usman praised the team’s “unwavering spirit, discipline, and patriotism,” describing their victory as “a symbol of hope, resilience, and the great heights Nigeria can attain with the right leadership and vision.”

2027: Otuaro Urges Niger Delta Ex-agitators To Shun Desperate Politicians Planning Mischief

….Reaffirms Tinubu’s Commitment To Region

The Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Dr Dennis Otuaro, has appealed to ex-agitators in the Niger Delta to remain vigilant and resist the efforts of some politicians who are bent on destabilising the region for selfish ends.

He noted with concern the recent rise in politically-charged rhetoric and coordinated attempts by some politicians to pit ex-agitators and beneficiaries of the programme against the Federal Government, even ahead of the 2027 elections.

Otuaro spoke at the end of the second batch three-day strategic Leadership, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation Training organised by the PAP from July 30 to August 1, 2025, for its stakeholders in collaboration with the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja.

Otuaro, who presented certificates to the workshop participants and later hosted them to a reception at the PAP headquarters, admonished ex-agitators not to be deceived by such politicians and their antics.

He described these moves as reckless and unnecessary, as there is no basis for anyone to cause destabilisation given the President Tinubu administration’s commitment to the development and socio-economic advancement of the Niger Delta.

He stressed that President Tinubu was massively supporting the programme’s human capital development and empowerment schemes for ex-agitators and beneficiaries.

Otuaro, while urging the participants to play their role as leaders, said, “We can all see the commitment of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to the Presidential Amnesty Programme. Ex-agitators and beneficiaries in general should not be deceived and distracted by some politicians.

“Be assured that nobody will do it better than President Tinubu. As Niger Delta people, we have to thank the President for his genuine love for the Presidential Amnesty Programme and our region as a whole.

“The President Tinubu administration has shown goodwill to our people, not just in words, but in action. The President has expanded the budget of the programme, allowing us to reach more beneficiaries and strengthen our reintegration and rehabilitation initiatives.

‘’Furthermore, Niger Deltans have been appointed to strategic positions in key ministries and agencies. This level of inclusion is unprecedented and deserves acknowledgement. All we need to do is to be united for the President.”

He urged all ex-agitators and stakeholders in the region to reflect on the progress made and not allow themselves to be used by political actors who do not have the interest of the region at heart.

He said their focus should be on peace, stability, and development of the region, adding that “any call for confrontation or disaffection at this time is not only misplaced but also harmful to the gains we have recorded.”

According to him, the Tinubu administration means well for the Niger Delta, and his goodwill must be reciprocated with support, unity, and constructive engagement.

Otuaro reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the PAP would continue to serve as a platform for sustainable human capital development, empowerment, and regional peace.

He called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders to continue sensitising the youths to resist being used as tools of political destabilisation, emphasising that lasting progress can only be achieved through cooperation, not conflict.

The Immorality Called Big Brother Naija

0

By Tochukwu Jimo Obi

It is truly unfortunate and deeply troubling that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and by extension the Federal Government of Nigeria, has consistently allowed a program like Big Brother Naija to air year after year on our television screens. This show, under the guise of entertainment and “reality TV,” has become a consistent promoter of nudity, vulgarity, moral carelessness, and cultural erosion. What message are we really sending to our youth?

For a country battling the scourge of youth restlessness, social media obsession, and moral degradation, one would have expected government institutions to tighten their grip on media content. Sadly, the reverse seems to be the case. While our traditional values are gradually being swept away by global influence and uncontrolled media content, Big Brother Naija continues to pour fuel into the fire of moral collapse.

The program glamorises behaviour that, by African and Nigerian cultural standards, would traditionally be frowned upon: open sexual content, excessive partying, foul language, and an overall lack of decency. Yet, millions of adults tune in daily, often with children or teenagers present, to consume this content as though it were wholesome or harmless. The lines between right and wrong are being blurred before impressionable eyes, and the result is visible in our society today: disrespect for elders, shallow aspirations, and an obsession with vanity.

What is most shocking is the government’s continued silence. A country with a Ministry of Information and agencies dedicated to cultural preservation ought to take a firm stand against programs that offer no educational, moral, or cultural value to society. Instead of encouraging innovation, productivity, and discipline in our youth, Big Brother Naija celebrates idle gossip, lustful behavior, and empty fame.

We cannot continue to fold our arms while our children and teenagers are indoctrinated into believing that vulgarity equals stardom. We cannot continue to shout about insecurity, social vices, and corruption when we are not bold enough to cut off the sources feeding these vices.

I call on the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the appropriate agencies, to immediately ban the broadcast of Big Brother Naija on all platforms, satellite, terrestrial, or online. Furthermore, no Nigerian station should be permitted to air or promote the show. We must take deliberate steps to protect the moral fabric of our society before it is completely torn apart.

The time to act is now. Our values, culture, and the future of our youth are too important to be sacrificed on the altar of entertainment.

PSC Debunks 2025 Police Recruitment Rumours, Warns Fraudsters

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed as false and misleading recent social media reports claiming that the recruitment process for police officers for the year 2025 has commenced.

In a statement signed by the Commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, the PSC described the circulating stories as “mischievous” and a calculated attempt to mislead prospective applicants.

“The Commission has not commenced this exercise and obviously will follow established procedures and processes when it is ready,” the statement said. It advised members of the public, especially interested applicants, to disregard such fake publications and await official communication from the Commission.

The PSC expressed concern over the recurring attempts by fraudsters to confuse the public each time recruitment plans are in the pipeline, stating that such activities not only mislead innocent Nigerians but also undermine the integrity of the recruitment process.

To address the situation, the Commission has called on relevant security agencies to track down the perpetrators behind the fraudulent notices and bring them to justice.

The PSC reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent and credible recruitment process, conducted strictly in accordance with laid-down rules and regulations. It also warned fraudsters to steer clear of the Commission’s programmes or risk facing the full weight of the law.
