In a significant accomplishment for Nigeria, Dr Bosun Tijani, the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, has been elected as Vice Chair of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council for 2025. This election underscores Nigeria’s dedication to digital transformation and inclusive innovation on the global stage.
According to a press release on Wednesday, 18th June, 2025, signed by the Deputy Director/Head of Press and Public Relations Unit, Eunice Akro, the election took place during the ongoing ITU Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, where representatives from around the world gather to discuss advancements in information and communications technologies (ICTs). Established in 1865, the ITU is the oldest specialised agency of the United Nations, tasked with the mission of connecting people globally through innovative and sustainable digital solutions.
Upon accepting his new role, Dr. Tijani expressed his gratitude and optimism, stating, “Nigeria remains committed to supporting the collective mission of the ITU, particularly in prioritizing key areas such as the provision of resilient and sustainable digital infrastructures and ensuring timely access to meaningful connectivity for all communities, especially the underserved.”
With this leadership position, Nigeria stands poised to enhance its influence in shaping the future of digital development across Africa and beyond. Dr Tijani acknowledged the trust placed in him by the ITU Secretary General, Ms Doreen Bogdan-Martin, and the member states, highlighting the current defining moment characterised by rapid technological advancements and societal shifts.
He remarked, “We are uniquely privileged to witness the transformative power of digital technology, which empowers us to be more introspective, inclusive, and informed as we build our future.”
Additionally, Dr Tijani extended his congratulations to the newly elected ITU Chair, Ms Cristiana Flutur of Romania, pledging to collaborate closely with her to achieve shared objectives. He called on all stakeholders to make the ITU a beacon of inclusive innovation and trusted collaboration for current and future generations.
