… CP Orders Immediate Investigation, Vows Disciplinary Action
The Delta State Police Command has identified and arrested a police officer captured in a viral video shooting at a moving vehicle in Asaba.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Command described the officer’s conduct as “unprofessional and unbecoming of a police officer.”
According to the statement, a careful review of the video revealed that the officer acted contrary to the Nigeria Police Force Order 237, which governs the lawful use of firearms.
“The Command condemns his act in totality, as no policeman has the right to use his firearm without recourse to Force Order 237. It is the duty of every police officer to protect lives and property, not to endanger them,” the statement read.
The erring officer has since been identified, detained at the Command Headquarters, and subjected to internal disciplinary procedures. The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has directed that a thorough investigation be carried out immediately to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
While confirming that the officer was reportedly responding to a hit-and-run incident, the Command stressed that such situations do not justify the unlawful use of firearms.
CP Abaniwonda assured members of the public that the officer would face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with the Police Act and regulations, adding that the Command remains committed to upholding professionalism and ensuring the protection of lives and property across Delta State.
