Delta Police Command Rescues Kidnapped Victim, Arrests Drug Barons, And Recovers Large Quantity Of Illicit Drugs

…. CP Abaniwonda Warns Youths Against Drug Abuse

The Delta State Police Command has recorded major operational successes in its ongoing efforts to combat crime and drug trafficking across the state, with the rescue of a kidnapped victim, the arrest of suspected drug barons, and the recovery of a large quantity of illicit drugs.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, the Command disclosed that on 12th October 2025, at about 1400 hours, the Divisional Police Officer of Ovian Aladja Division, CSP Friday Ekundayo, received a distress call reporting a kidnapping incident. According to the report, a group of armed men had broken into a residence at midnight, attacked the occupants, and abducted the complainant’s wife.

Acting swiftly, CSP Ekundayo led a team of operatives to track the kidnappers to a forest along the Iyara community. Following sustained pressure from the operatives, the hoodlums abandoned the victim and fled the scene. The woman was rescued unhurt and reunited with her family, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

In a separate operation, operatives of the Crack Squad, Delta State Command, Asaba, acting on credible intelligence, stormed a hideout in Effurun GRA in the early hours of the same day and arrested two suspected drug traffickers, Igwe Samson (33) and Abalum Sunday (39).

Upon searching their Toyota Sienna vehicle, the operatives recovered a large consignment of illicit drugs, including 450 bottles of CSP Codeine, 188 bottles of Bargadine, 208 sachets of Tramadol 100mg, 300 sachets of Swinol, 100 sachets of Tramadol 500mg, 50 sachets of Rohypnol, and a bag of weed suspected to be cannabis.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had been in the illegal drug trade for about two years, sourcing their supplies from Onitsha and transporting them mostly at night to evade detection. The Command has intensified efforts to arrest their suppliers and customers.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, commended the gallantry and professionalism of the officers involved in both operations.

He further warned youths against involvement in crime and drug abuse, stressing that drug addiction not only fuels criminal behaviour but also poses serious health risks.

“Drug abuse is detrimental to the health and well-being of our youth. I urge all young people to shun drug use and channel their energy into productive ventures,” CP Abaniwonda stated.
