The Department of State Services (DSS) has intercepted a cache of sophisticated weapons and apprehended two suspects linked to the illegal arms trade in Delta State.
The Deputy Director of Operations, DSS Delta State Command, Mr. Anthony Ifemeje, made this known during a courtesy visit to the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, in Asaba.
According to Ifemeje, the operation, carried out within the Asaba metropolis, led to the arrest of a notorious arms dealer, identified as Stephen Sabo Atoshi, and his accomplice, a 40-year-old secondary school teacher from Taraba State.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were part of a transnational arms trafficking network responsible for smuggling small arms and light weapons from Sebha, southern Libya, through Chad, and into Nigeria via an illegal border in Gidam, Yobe State.
During interrogation, the principal suspect reportedly confessed to engaging in the illicit trade for over eight years, during which he supplied more than 55 weapons, including General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs) and AK-47 rifles, to various parts of the country.
The DSS reiterated its commitment to working with other security agencies to dismantle illegal arms networks and curb the proliferation of weapons threatening national security.
