Egbetokun Did Not Lobby Prominent Yoruba Leaders To Convince Tinubu To Extend His Tenure – Alliance

The Integrity Youth Alliance has faulted the publication by one the SUPREME, a notorious medium known for spewing more fiction than fact, “that IGP Egbetokun left Lagos back to Abuja last Sunday after spending three days allegedly lobbying prominent Yoruba leaders to convince Tinubu to extend his tenure.”.

The group made this known on Wednesday in a statement issued by its publicity secretary, Danjuma Lamido, to the media.

Lamido said that IGP Egbetokun doesn’t need any lobby since his appointment letter dated 3rd November 2023, signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, stated that “Your appointment is with effect from 31st October 2023 for a term of four (4) years in accordance with the provisions of Section 7(6) of the Police Act, 2020.

It said: “The fiction published by the SUPREME is completely sponsored hearsay and jaundiced facts. The online medium publisher has, more than anything else, practised yellow journalism, thus facing much criticism for errors, inaccuracies, and controversies.

“The outlet has been accused of prioritising sensational headlines over fact-based reporting. Lack of transparency leads to questions about their reporting practice.

“We wish to remind the SUPREME of some key points about the Nigerian law on libellous publications: Section 373 of the Criminal Code Act defines libel as a false and malicious publication that damages a person’s reputation, thus a criminal offence punishable with imprisonment for up to two years or a fine as provided in Section 375, Criminal Code Act.

“As civil action, victims can also sue for damages under the Tort of Defamation. The law presumes malice if the publication is false and damages reputation in Section 374, Criminal Code Act.
