The Integrity Youth Alliance, an organisation that has been monitoring the development trends in the Nigeria Police Force for over 15 years, has blasted an online news medium, Sahara Reporters, for its biased publication against the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
Reacting to a publication titled “BREAKING: Man Dies In Police Custody After Arrest Of Seven Persons By IGP Egbetokun’s Team On Oyetola’s Orders Over Osun Election Dispute,” the Alliance Publicity Director, Danjuma Lamido, said it is devilish to have said that “Ademola Adelugbin Apomu arrests were ordered by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, acting on the instructions of former Osun State Governor and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who is also a nephew of President Bola Tinubu.”
“We wish to state categorically that IGP Kayode Egbetokun is not involved in the local government elections nor Osun state politics and is not involved in a case that is before a competent court, Lamido said.Â
“There are no individuals detained “illegally” by the IGP on behalf of former Governor Oyetola at the IRT in Abuja, as Egbetokun is committed to preserving the fundamental human rights of every person and adhering to worldwide best practices in policing.
“To even prove that the news report lacks merit, CSP Opalola Yemisi is no longer the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, and she is no longer an SP but now a CSP, Lamido said.
“Sahara Reporters’ persistently hostile and inaccurate reporting, particularly against the Inspector General of Police, IGP Egbetokun, has raised concerns because it is obvious that their reporting is motivated by deliberate deception, which is completely unacceptable.
“The significance of professional standards in reporting, especially when it comes to unconfirmed information, is something we hereby urge respectable media outlets to emphasise, the statement concluded.
