The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Ajao S. Adewale, has issued a stern directive to all police officers within the command, addressing issues of illegal detention, interference in civil matters, particularly land disputes, and extortion practices.
The announcement comes in response to increasing reports of unlawful detentions for bailable offenses, as well as allegations of police officers extorting both complainants and suspects. CP Adewale described these practices as violations of constitutional rights and contrary to the directives set forth by the Inspector-General of Police.
According to a press release on Saturday, 21st June 2025, signed by the FCT Police Command Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, in his directive, CP Adewale instructed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Heads of Departments (HODs) to promptly review and release individuals held for minor, bailable offenses after proper documentation and verification of sureties. He emphasized that obtaining bail is a legal right and warned that any officer found soliciting money for bail or related documentation would face severe disciplinary measures.

Furthermore, he reiterated that police intervention in civil matters, especially land disputes, is strictly prohibited as these cases fall outside of police jurisdiction. Officers who violate this directive, as well as their supervisors who fail to enforce it, will be held accountable. Additionally, CP Adewale condemned the demand for payment prior to investigating cases, labeling such actions as extortion and abuse of office, with offenders facing prosecution.
Members of the public have also been cautioned against offering bribes to police officers, which constitutes a criminal offense under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act. Citizens are reminded not to exploit the police for personal disputes or debt recovery.
Residents of the FCT are encouraged to support the command’s initiatives aimed at ensuring professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights. Reports of police misconduct may be reported to the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) at 08107314192.
