Human Rights Day: Police Under Egbetokun Don’t Operate Like A Criminal Force, Alliance Blast RULAAC

The Integrity Youth Alliance, an organisation that says it has been monitoring the trends in the Nigeria Police Force for over 15 years, has blasted RULAAC over its reckless and baseless statement that “Police still operate like a criminal force.”

Reacting to the statement credited to one Okechukwu Nwanguma that “police routinely break the law in the most egregious and reckless manner,” the Board Chairman of the Alliance, Comrade Adewole Kehinde, said that RULAAC must be living in the past because since the assumption of IGP Kayode Egbetokun as the 22nd Indigenous Inspector General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force has been characterised by a series of transformative reforms, innovative programs, and notable achievements that have collectively redefined policing in Nigeria.

“In line with the Police Act 2020, police personnel have been carrying out arrests of citizens in a professional way. It is wrong to say, “Their willingness to easily offer themselves as tools for oppression and repression of dissent and freedom of expression and for settling scores is most disgraceful and subversive of the due process and undermines the rule of law on which democracy survives.”.

“The Nigeria Police has experienced a major reorganisation under Egbetokun’s leadership. He has been a driving force behind this transformation, concentrating on reforming policing practices, empowering officers, building community partnerships, and encouraging transparency—all of which have been essential to modernising the force and improving its operational efficacy, Adewole said.

He said further, “The public, civil society, and media must aggressively fulfil their watchdog roles for the NPF, even as Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun works to restore trust through accountability, transparency, and community involvement.

“In addition to revolutionising the Nigeria Police Force, IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s vision, reforms, and programs have laid a solid foundation for its future.

“As he continues to lead with distinction, the nation looks forward to the continued evolution of policing in Nigeria under his capable guidance.

“His journey is a testament to his unwavering commitment to public service and his dedication to the cause of peace and security, the statement said.
