…. Caution Against Misinterpretation of Police Signals
The South West Youth Alliance has addressed the misleading publication by an online medium, which claimed that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, issued a gag order to serving officers. This purported directive was said to “prevent Commissioners of Police and senior commands nationwide from allowing further public outcry”.
According to a press release dated Friday, 27th June 2025, and signed by the Publicity Director of the Alliance, Adenike Ajanlekoko, the IGP merely instructed Nigeria Police Force Pensions Limited to promptly assess the claims, identify any potential shortcomings, and take appropriate action to address the issues raised by the retired Superintendent of Police (SP).
“IGP Egbetokun is acutely aware of the difficulties encountered by police pensioners. He has made it a priority to ensure the well-being of both active and retired officers, recognizing that efficient and timely pension management is vital for sustaining morale and upholding the integrity of the institution.
Ajanlekoko noted that in February 2025, the Inspector-General convened a meeting with retired police officers to address concerns surrounding the Contributory Pension Scheme.
“We recall that during an interactive session with retirees in Abuja in February 2025, IGP Egbetokun acknowledged that the current pension scheme does not guarantee a dignified and financially secure life for retired police personnel.
“The IGP emphasized that police officers work under challenging conditions, facing risks and making sacrifices that cannot be ignored. It is only just and rewarding that, in retirement, they enjoy a financially secure life.
“We also recall that the IGP established a committee to review pension matters and propose recommendations for reforms.
“The Contributory Pension Scheme has been a subject of debate; some argue that it provides long-term financial sustainability, while others believe it has failed police personnel, leaving retirees in poverty and suffering.
“In response, IGP Egbetokun assures all officers—both active and retired—along with their families, of the Force’s steadfast dedication to improving their welfare and establishing a system that honors their sacrifices.
“The IGP firmly believes in the freedom of expression and will never silence any personnel expressing genuine concerns. We therefore call on police personnel to disregard the misleading publication by Sahara Reporters,” the statement concluded.
