….Says other CPs will emulate the training
The Inspector General of Police, IGP Baba Alkali Usman, has commended the FCT Police Commissioner, CP Sadiq Abubakar, for the retraining of a police constable in the command.
Addressing the constables on Thursday at the Peacekeeping Ground at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, the IGP asked the constables to use the training knowledge in the right way.
The IGP said, “You use it when it is necessary to execute your official function.” Your ability, your ability, and your response to issues will be influenced by this training you have. We will also, as a force, benefit from you. We will keep you as a quick response or intervention squad that can operate together for civil disorders issues as they affect the FCT. So you have the advantage of being in the FCT as an indigenous FCT.
IGP Baba Alkali further said, “That means all the nooks and crannies of the FCT are known to all of you.” At least, if you don’t know them all, you will know your local government area very well. There is nothing that is going to be new.
“Furthermore, you will also know the norms, the values, the culture, and the religion.” All that influences life and activities in your local government. You also know the people, and you also speak the language.
“So there are lots of advantages that we can get from your policing strength, and that is the essence of his scheme that has just started.” We train you and send you back to your local government to assist the police. We are just the paid agent of government but many other people will collaborate with, us to police our communities, our societies, and the local government or our town.
“Congratulations on having this training. We will use you in the best way. We will protect you, we will guide you will look into your welfare and we never sacrifice it.
“So this is the initiative of your CP and I will ask all other CPs in the federation to emulate this kind of exercise or training so that each CP should have just like we have a quick intervention. This is even going to be superior with the quick intervention we have because you have done training.
The IGP reiterated, “And whenever you catch them at a young stage of life.” You will find it easy to bend them the way you want, and that is why he is concentrating on taking you as a constable. You are just coming into force. We have guidelines for some of you who are going to be given firearms. There are instances, ways, and manners of using a firearm. And there are not only guidelines, there are stages when to use your firearms. We have other things like the smoke grenade; we even have tear gas this time, and we are going to distribute it very soon.
The officers conducted a brief demonstration of the contemporary techniques for crowd control and intervention in the event of public disorder which they have learned in preparation for the 2023 General Elections.
While reiterating his vision for a Police built on the tenets of training and retraining, the Inspector-General of Police charged the officers to employ their training judiciously with a huge dedication to duty to ensure that the 2023 General Elections security management is effectively handled at every level, particularly at the grassroots.
In his remarks, the FCT Police Commissioner, CP Sadiq Abubakar, said the purpose of the retraining is to intensify their training on weapon handling and public order management.
He said that the team is divided into different sections, such as weapon handling and crowd-containing.
