IGP Egbetokun Presents N2.99bn Cheques To Deceased Officers’ Families

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday, presented N2.08bn cheques to the families of police officers who died in active service in the last five years.

Egbetokun presented the cheques to 706 beneficiaries at the Force Headquarters in Abuja in a continued effort to enhance the welfare of police personnel and their families.

The IGP also unveiled the Nigeria Police Insurance Claims Management Portal (www.npfinsuranceclaimsmgt.ng).

The event also featured the inauguration of a specialised training programme for Insurance Desk Officers nationwide.

Egbetokun emphasised the significance of this initiative in addressing the backlog of unsettled insurance claims dating from 2010 to 2023, which had caused financial hardship for many affected families.

Through sustained efforts, the Force has successfully disbursed benefits to 6,465 beneficiaries in eight phases, amounting to N17.8 billion. Further demonstrating this commitment, the IGP announced the disbursement of an additional N2.99 billion to 706 beneficiaries covering policy years 2020–2024. This ninth phase brings the total insurance benefits paid to N20.84 billion, benefiting 7,171 families.

The IGP said the Nigeria Police Insurance Claims Management Portal was a transformative platform, designed to streamline the processing of insurance claims.

He said the idea was to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in the administration of insurance claims by leveraging technology to eliminate bottlenecks for a seamless process.

The Nigeria Police Insurance Claims Management Portal serves as a digital platform designed to streamline the insurance claims process, eliminate delays, and ensure seamless access to benefits, improving the overall welfare and promoting transparency in the system. In line with this initiative, a specialised training programme has also been introduced for Insurance Desk Officers across 17 Zonal Commands and 37 State Commands to enhance efficiency in claims management and service delivery.

The IGP equally reiterates the continual strive of the Force’s management to provide succour for the families of our fallen heroes and improve the welfare of serving and retired officers.

Egbetokun said the commencement of an intensive training programme for insurance desk officers was in recognition of the importance of capacity building by the leadership of the force.

He said it was crucial to equip the officers with the requisite knowledge and expertise, considering the vital role they play in facilitating the insurance claims process.

The IGP said the training would provide a robust understanding of insurance administration policies and procedures to ensure a seamless transition to a modernised system.

He urged the participants to take full advantage of the training opportunity to ask questions, engage actively, and enhance their proficiency.

The Force Insurance Officer, Lydia Ameh, a chief superintendent of police, said the presentation of the cheques was made possible because of the IGP’s commitment and affection.

Present at the event were members of the Force Management Team, Senior police officers, Insurance industry stakeholders, and the beneficiaries of the scheme.
