The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has presented cheques worth N2.9bn to the families of police officers who died in active serving in the last four years.
He doled out the cheques to 1,235 beneficiaries on Friday, 23rd May, 2025, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Scheme package of the Nigeria Police Force.
The cheques that were presented to the beneficiaries at the force headquarters in Abuja comprise beneficiaries from the 2018/2019, 2021/2022, 2022/2023, and 2023/2024 fiscal years.
The IGP, while appreciating the stewardship of President Bola Tinubu for his administration’s commitment towards the well-being of police officers, charged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the money.
The Inspector-General of Police stated in his address that the Nigeria Police Force is built on the pillars of service, integrity, and sacrifice. The Force is deeply committed to the welfare of police officers and will continually honour the legacies of the fallen officers, as no compensation can truly replace a lost life.
“Through sustained efforts, the Force had successfully disbursed benefits to 7,076 beneficiaries in nine phases, amounting to Twenty Billion, One Hundred and Twenty-Three Million, Four Hundred and Twenty Thousand, Six Hundred and Ninety One Naira, Seven Kobo (N20,123,420,691.7), the IGP said.
Friday’s disbursement of an additional Two Billion, Eight Hundred and Fifty-Five Million, One Hundred and Eighty-One Thousand, Seven Hundred and Ninety-Six Naira, Fifty-Five Kobo (N2,855,181,796.55) to 1,235 beneficiaries has made total insurance benefits paid to Twenty-Two Billion, Nine Hundred and Seventy-Eight Million, Six Hundred and Two Thousand, Four Hundred and Eighty-Eight Naira, Twenty-Five Kobo (N22,978,602,488.25), benefiting 8,311 families.
The Force Insurance Officer, CSP Lydia Ameh, stated that the cheque disbursement was made possible due to the paternal affection of the inspector general of police, who felt the pains of the families of the deceased personnel who were facing delay in payment of their insurance money.
She said: “My sincere appreciation goes to the Inspector-General of Police, whose commitment, valued guidance, and extraordinary leadership role are crucial in ensuring that the Force cleared pending insurance claims, which has resulted in the presentation of Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Scheme cheques to 1,235 next of kin/beneficiaries of our brave officers and men who lost their lives while on active duty for the Insurance Policy Years of 2018/2019, 2021/2022, 2022/2023, and 2023/2024, amounting to N2,855,181,796.55 which will go a long way to alleviate the sufferings of the families of our departed colleagues.
