IGP Stay-In-Office Is Not Against Government Regulations; NYP Counters Sowore’s Disinformation

The Ndigbo Young Professionals have countered the mischievous disinformation posted on social media by self-acclaimed activist Omoyele Sowore.

Responding to Sowore’s post on his X handle (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, where he described the continued stay in office of IGP Kayode Egbetokun as a violation of service rules and a slap at national integrity, NYP National Coordinator Ambassador Chukwuemeka Chinonso stated that it is unfortunate that, despite clarifications from the Attorney General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, regarding the amended Police Act of 2024—which allows the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to serve a full four-year term regardless of age—Sowore continues to mislead his gullible followers by claiming that “continued stay in office is against government regulations.”

“The tenure of IGP Kayode Egbetokun is governed by Section 7(6) of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020, which states that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) is appointed for a term of four years.

“Additionally, Section 8(a) of the amended Nigeria Police Act addresses the term of the IGP, indicating that they will remain in office until the completion of the term outlined in their appointment letter, regardless of the usual retirement regulations applicable to police officers,” Ambassador Chukwuemeka Chinonso stated.

He further said that the Attorney General has clarified that the amendment is legal and that the IGP’s continued service is lawful because it aligns with the provisions of the amended act. If Sowore is not satisfied, we expect him to approach the law court instead of engaging in his daily mischievous blackmail of the 22nd Indigenous Inspector General of Police.

“We categorically state without apology that the tenure of IGP Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police does not violate service rules or national integrity, as the Police Act of 2020 (as amended) is very explicit, the statement stated.
