The Integrity Youth Alliance has dismissed comments made by Kaduna PDP chieftain, Dr. AbdurRahman Usman, describing his remarks on the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) as misleading and rooted in a poor understanding of the Nigeria Police Act.
Dr. Usman, in an interview with The Sun Newspaper on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, had questioned the legality of the current IGP’s tenure. But in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its spokesperson, Danjuma Lamido, the Integrity Youth Alliance faulted the politician’s claims, saying they were “misinformed and poorly researched.”
According to the group, contrary to Dr. Usman’s assertions, the IGP did not receive any tenure extension. Lamido cited Section 7(6) of the Nigeria Police Act (as amended), which empowers the President to appoint the IGP and stipulates that the tenure shall follow the terms provided in the appointment letter. He also referenced the 2024 amendment to Section 18(8A) of the Act, which states that the IGP shall remain in office for the period specified by the President “regardless of age.”
The Alliance added that Dr. Usman’s claim that no previous IGP had enjoyed an extension was historically inaccurate, stressing that several former police chiefs had served beyond initial timelines based on presidential discretion and national security considerations.

It further criticized Dr. Usman for aligning with activist Omoyele Sowore, who recently described the IGP’s tenure as illegal. The group said the duo’s position reflected “a basic lack of understanding of statutory provisions governing the Nigeria Police Force” and cautioned that such comments could mislead the public.
The Integrity Youth Alliance urged Dr. Usman to concentrate on issues within his political party rather than comment on subjects “he lacks the competence to speak on.”
The group reaffirmed its confidence in the legality of the IGP’s tenure and advised public figures to seek proper information before making statements capable of distorting facts and stirring unnecessary controversy.
