Japanese And Nigeria Police Expand Collaboration Against Cybercrime

…… As Operatives arrest 11 for various cybercrimes.

The Nigeria Police and the Japanese National Police Agency have stepped up their joint efforts to counter the growing threat of cybercrime.

The success of the operation that led to the arrest of 11 suspects involved in serious crimes like identity theft, romance scams, and computer-related fraud that targeted Japanese victims from Nigeria was the main focus of a press briefing held at the NPF National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) to highlight the strength and efficacy of the ongoing international partnership.

Five cybercrime cases involving 13 suspected threat actors operating from Nigeria were reported to the NPF National Cybercrime Centre on April 3, 2024, in collaboration with Nigeria’s National Central Bureau and the NCB Tokyo. Eleven people were arrested as a result of the subsequent investigation, which also exposed a vast network that used social media, especially Instagram, to trick unwary victims into falling for phoney romantic connections. Wire transactions were used to trick victims into sending money, which was then transformed into Bitcoin and sent to other digital wallets in Nigeria.

The earliest stages of the inquiry resulted in the recovery of $33,320, with continued efforts to retrieve additional stolen funds and dismantle the whole network responsible for these crimes.

In the meantime, the Nigeria Police has reaffirmed its dedication to protecting people and property in the real world as well as online, and it is prepared to use all of its resources and develop new technologies in the fight against cybercrime.
